Two big rigs result in one fatalitySCOTT AKANEWICH Staff Writer April 9, 2008 - 10:47AM CAJON PASS One motorist was killed in a Wednesday morning crash involving a pair of big rigs on Highway 138, just west of Interstate 15, officials reported. The driver of a big rig attempted to make a right turn from I-15 onto Highway 138 at an unsafe speed when he hit another big rig according to California Highway Patrol Officer Dale Witham. The driver exiting southbound I-15 failed to negotiate a right-hand turn onto 138 due to an unsafe speed for the road conditions at the time, he said. Neither driver has been identified, however, the driver making the turn, 50, from Norwalk was found dead at the scene, officials said. The other driver, 54, from Beaumont was air-lifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, officials said. Eastbound Highway 138 was closed at Highway 2 in Wrightwood for several hours. The CHP also asked Caltrans to close the I-15 off ramp to Highway 138. http://epaper.vvdailypress.com/Default/Skins/DailyPress/Client.asp?Skin=DailyPress&Daily=VDP&AW=1207783028546&AppName=1

Came through there a little while ago. It's still down to one lane. The 15 was still closed at the 210, also.

Only the southbound 15 is closed. He can come home using the 15 northbound. They just reopened all lanes of the 138 also at the 15.

4N11.2:
While out on Patrol yesterday we checked out the dirt road connecting Vincent Gap to the Fenner Camp at the top of Big Rock Canyon. The USFS wanted us to open up the gates and make it accessible to the public if the road was in good condition.
Unfortunately... Coming up from the bottom, the road was in decent condition until we got close to the canyon that washed out Hwy 2. We began seeing debris from those big yellow containers CalTrans uses to block areas and fills with water or sand. We then came upon the remnants of an avalanche that had come down from Hwy 2 and blocked the road. The avalanche was significant. The road is impassible at that location and will require weeks of melt and/or some heavy equipment to clear the Ice and debris. No doubt that damaged section of Hwy 2 has received even more damage. (Thus the reason for them now wanting to build a bridge across that canyon.)
The road from the avalanche up to Vincent Gap was reported by hikers to also be in decent shape.
Until further notice the road connecting Vincent Gap down to Fenner Camp at the top of Big Rock Canyon is still closed.
Blue Ridge:
We also drove in to check the condition of the road across Blue Ridge. We couldn't get much further than the turn off to the FAA Microwave towers as there is still a lot of snow and berms across the road in the shaded areas that are still unpassable by vehicle. It appears it will also require weeks of melt and/or some heavy equipment to clear the snow from the north side and shady areas.
Until further notice Blue Ridge is still closed.

There is a wounded deer at the bottom of LPC near the "S" turns. HB wanted me to report this as a deer getting in the road is dangerous. Be careful.

Thanks for posting that.
I was down on the bottom S turns. The deer was laying on the right shoulder of the road. I think it was hit, but still alive. It appeared that it's head was up. It was still dark out.
Does anyone know who I can call?
Thanks.

Anyways.... I found another local VV Animal Control number. Had to leave a message. I don't know if they will call back. Not having much luck reporting this. I have been bounced around this morning... Has any else seen the deer this morning? Seems like there was more local concern for the LPC lost pelican a few years ago....
