I'd like to plant a garden that squirrels will not destroy.  Does anyone have experience here in WW with garden veggies and herbs that squirrels did not consume?  We had a volunteer tomato plant come up last year that squirrels didn't touch, but how about other plants?  Thank you.

I grow peppers, eggplant, and zucchini and have never had a problem with squirrels. I also have a small strawberry patch that they dont bother too much either.

the ground squirrels in your neck of the woods thrive on pepper plants or lettuce. They do not seem to like tomato leaves.

;) I know of a great garden that you can plant and squirrels won't destroy.  It's called a Japanese rock garden.  And you only have to plant the rocks once if you place them carefully.  ::)  (Not very helpful huh?)

Actually it is helpful, Hobbes.  I would like to create a labeled rock and mineral "garden" someday...

I've (unwillingly) fed many squirrels recently on marigolds. Anyone know of some flowers I can plant in flower boxes that the squirrels don't find as tasty?

After more than five years of feeding the squirrels hundreds of plants, I've found they won't eat: Snapdragons, dianthus, sedum, gaura, penstemon, lavendar, Russian Sage, lilacs, daffodils, columbine, salvia, dahlias, and peonies.

No problem with herbs. I have to plant veggies in containers on my second story deck.

Has anyone tried a motion-activated sprinkler as a deterrent?

Try geraniums also - last year I had petunias, marigolds, lobelia, etc., and geraniums, all in their little 6-packs or pots, and everything except the geraniums got eaten before I even got them planted.  Alyssum is good too - I had lotsa that all summer and it didn't seem to get munched.

Try buying some cayenne pepper in bulk and sprinkling it on the plants generously.  You can sprinkle it right on the leaves.  Then once they get a taste of it, you only have to sprinkle it AROUND the plants every once in awhile.  That should solve the problem.

Okay, Okay, I'm being serious this time.  When I used to do a lot of vegitable gardening, I would put garlic and chili peppers into a blender along with some water and puree the whole mess.  Then, I'd put the brew into a gallon jug with water in it and let it ferment for a few days.  Strain out the garlic and peppers, then pour the spiked water into a sprayer.  A generous spray of this solution on your plants once a week will keep just about any animal at a distance!  But be sure to let it ferment for a while, the fermentation seems to make a difference in its effectiveness.

I've heard a tablespoon of tabasco in a spray bottle works and won't kill the plants.

I did a test a few years back to see if red pepper would slow down the squirrels at the bird feeder. As you can see it didn't work.

It's very commnon to have problems with squirrels near bird feeders. It wouldn't be so bad if this female came by a few times a day but she will parks her herself at the suet and continues all day to devour the food.

I found a tip on a squirrel site that said to put pepper flakes on the bird feed.
It claimed that mammals won't bother the bird feed with the pepper and has no affect on birds.

It seemed to work for the first few days, then the squirrel decided she would go for it.

Sure looks like her tongue might be hot.

I like that second picture... you can just imagine the squirrel saying "Holy #($*&#$ that stuff is spicy. Where's the Pepto?"
