The side roads are still pretty slippery in town...especially the uphills. No sign of any plowing. I've watched a number of cars (some of them 4X4's) turn around after trying unsuccessfully to get up Spruce above the rise at Oriole.
I heard Cal-Trans won't send out the plows until there's at least 4 inches of snow.
Addendum at 12:29 -- Woops!....There goes a plow finally.

This is the notice for the Traffic Task Force for this weekend. Sounds busy-
Based on the new snow yesterday and today (12 to 16 inches) and the upcoming holiday weekend Mountain High Resort will reach it's capacity on Feb 13th, 14th and 15th. Mountain High Resort has hired two CHP officers for each of the before mentioned days to help with traffic flow and illegal parking along Hwy 2. Mountain High Resort will be using a portable message sign, street level banners and electronic media to convey our parking and ticket status to the public. In addition to Mountain High Resort being very busy this weekend the snow play activity will be extreme from Hwy 2 & 138 all the way to the closer area on Hwy 2 past Mountain High Resort due to the new snow. This holiday weekend has the potential to be the busiest weekend of the year!
Yikes! It's a beautiful day! I came home yesterday via Valyermo (Friday 4pm) and the snowplayers were out. Not many, but I think it was a sign of a very busy weekend. It's beautiful during the day but still rather slick after dark so be careful on the ice!
We're taking advantage of the nice weather to load up the scooters and head to San Diego. Have a wonderful weekend all!

Has anyone been out there today? I'm not seeing much traffic on the live cams but I was just curious if anyone had been out and about and seen it firsthand. Hubby has to go out to Verdugo Pines today so wasn't sure if he was going to sit in traffic to do it . . .

I Flew right up 2, didn't see any snowplayers. The light traffic was mostly heading toward the ski area.

While I think it will be busy later today, I don't think it will be completely slammed like some predicted. The weather is too nice in the basin today, and I think people are doing other things to spread out ther weekend activities.

During all of last week a big thank you to Caltrans for reminding drivers on the freeways using the message boards through out the southland freeway system. There were several vehicle vrs. car related accidents recently resulting in fatalities and all vehicles involved were at fault by not seeing the motorcyclist.

That's nice for down in the city, but to have something about motorcycles on the board up here in February is not prioritizing very well. It could be utilized alot better.. like having it say something like "illegal parking violators will be ticketed or towed".
I realize CHP and Cal-Trans are different agencies, and they have limitations on what it can say... but there has got to be a way to have it say something a little more pertinent that is within those limitations.

When are these MURDERcyclists going to realize that the roads are not for them alone. Vehicles with four or more wheels are bigger than them and cause more damage to then than they cause to the four wheel or more vehicles most of the time.
I was run off the road three times on a motorcycle, never injured badly, and decided my well being was more important to me than riding a motorcycle.

It's starting to snow in Big Pines and there are a couple of slick spots on N4.

Just came up Hwy2 and they had us pull over to put on chains but then before we were finished all the CHP left and I'm assuming lifted chain control since no one was being stopped anywhere. Took the chains back off and made it up no problem.

Roy with SB County Roads is very good about letting us know when LPC is closed and reopened. It remains closed. Later today it may reopen. He usually lets us know in advance so watch the thread.
We didn't get much snow but did have off and on snow rain. LPC could be washed out. I wouldn't expect a ton of traffic coming up to play in 2 inches of wet snow.

I was wrong. There is bumper to bumper traffic on Hwy 2 now. Guess it must be a great view from down the hill.

Coming home to Wrightwood this morning, I hit the bumper-to-bumper at Desert Front Rd and it took me a 1/2 hour to get to the school. The sign says Lone Pine cnyn is still closed.

some of you might not realize that 10" of snow fell at Big Pines... so there's alot more snow just up the road! ;)

Snowave, did it fall on some people?...because judging from the racing CHP with lights flashing & more than 3 emergency vehicles going up Hwy 2, I'm pretty certain something terrible must have occured up the road in the last hour. :(

I think it's mainly been ski area injuries today, although CHP usually doesn't respond to those, to my knowledge.
They are towing TONS of illegally parked cars today up in the Big Pines area. :o

Jason said Lone Pine is open now but muddy and rocky at the bottom.

I took Lone Pine down the hill this morning and it was more sandy than anything else with some small pebbles but nothing big. It got a little squirrelly around the dirt-laden curves, but I made it no problem.

The first CPR I did in the back of the Wrightwood ambulance was in 1973 in the dead of a great snow year. We picked the patient up on Cedar just above the fire station and went to San Bernardino Community Hospital. Assistant Chief Steve Damon was driving and I was in the back of the low slung station wagon ambulance we had at the time. All I remember (other then having a sore neck from crouching over) was the bumper to bumper traffic from WW all the way to the freeway. Constant line of cars parked on both sides-some areas double parked and gridlock traffic. This was before Paramedics and it seemed like we were crawling. Steve put the ambulance on the center line and just kept us moving in the right direction. The one thing we did not have back then was the craziness on the local streets. Looking West from my Idaho home, my heart goes out to you all. There wasn't anything that was done about it fifty years ago and looks like being at the backside of two Counties and multiple agency jurisdictions has not changed the SNAFU that seems to occur when folks pass the 4,000ft sign on the way up. Like SkierBob said, you still have the weekend.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's wrote over 100 citations today for illegal parking and snow play. They are doing their best to combat all of the craziness we experience every winter. If you are having an issue, PLEASE call it in. They need the calls so they know to send more resources up here. Some parts of Wrightwood are CHP (Hwy 2 and Lonepine) and the deputies can't help with that. Anywhere else? Call the non-emergency line and they will do their best to help.

The Razor fire was actually up at the Forest Service OHV area in Baldy Mesa. A resident on Mountain Shadow Manor Rd called it in so that was the closest address. My friends could see the Razor on fire and saw an explosion (the gas tank). Thank god it was not near the horse ranch.

BPH is open as of 2:50pm when I went to check on progress. Quick work by LA County Public Works/Roads to clear the debris and reopen lanes.

During my commute home today (Jan 10) around 5:00-6:00 PM, 138 was completely closed from Oasis to the where 138 meets the 18. Not sure if it was due to storm damage/mud or another issue.

I drove through this stretch at approx. 12noon yesterday and there was a considerable amount of ponding water and mud on the roadway. There was also a semitruck tractor that looked like it had spun out and stuck in the mud off the west bound shoulder. A HD tow was in the process of setting up to pull the semi out.
This section was open this morning at 7:30am when I went through.

This must be a new one... I came through there maybe 45 mins before, and there was a pickup that got stuck on the ice.
This was during the time when the 15, and 138 were completely backed up, to the point that people were coming through Wrightwood, and trying to go down Lone Pine. What a cluster. I saw several 18 wheelers on Lone Pine too. Clearly they couldn't care less about the size/weight restrictions on Sheep Creek and Lone Pine

Due to adverse weather conditions the following closures have been put in place by Caltrans and County Roads:
SR-2 is closed from SR-138 to LA county line for non-residents. For residents R-3 chain requirements are in effect. Meaning chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions
Lone Pine Canyon Road has been closed temporarily at SR-138 due to icy roadway conditions.
In the Lucerne Valley area southbound SR-18 is closed just past the Mitsubishi cement plant going into Big Bear. The northbound lane is open but R-3 chain requirements are in effect. Meaning chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

My friend just tried to go to Stater Bros. She was able to make it down to 138 but was not allowed to turn left. So she came home.

Last post I saw is that the 2 is open to residents only. R3 chain control on all vehicles. The side streets are a whole other story. You can use this map for current conditions. This site is generally a head of this map on closures, status, etc.

From what I can see from a little drive I took, much of Highway 2 (and county side streets) have at best, one lane of traffic cleared. Shoulders not even plowed yet. Just west of Spruce, Caltrans is using a front loader to scoop up snow from the shoulder. They dump the snow into the wash. It's a slow process. I don't think they want to use plows any more, because there isn't many places where they can push all that extra snow off to the sides. Approaching the LA side of town, highway 2 looks worse. Still a single lane in many places.

Big Pines Hwy Update 2/28/2023 @ 11:00am:
LA County Public Works / Roads (LA Co PW) has crews working BPH from Largo Vista Rd heading Eastbound to clear traffic lanes in advance of the next storm expected to hit later today. This work began this morning.
They are using a snow thrower/blower to try and clear the traffic lanes themselves. No shoulder or parking areas have been cleared per my own observations.
There is at least one abandoned vehicle in the E/B lane approximately 1 mile East of Largo Vista Rd. This vehicle has been here since Friday night when the storm first started to significantly impact he area.
LA Co PW has hard closures in place on Largo Vista Rd @ Fort Tejon Rd. in Llano and also a closure at BPH @Bob's Gap Rd. in Valyermo. These closures are manned by LA Co PW during daytime hours from approx. 8:30am-6:00pm.
Even with the work to clear traffic lanes, with the expected snowfall amounts there will be very limited to no parking available.

Caltrans confirmed this morning that Highway 2 and Big Pines Highway will remain closed to the public through at least Monday as the community recovers from the historic amounts of snow that fell last week. Proof of residency is required at the CHP checkpoints.
A checkpoint will stay in place near Lone Pine Canyon to prevent snow players from visiting the mountain as recovery efforts continue. The department understands that this may negatively impact businesses who rely on tourist visits, but they do not want to compromise lifeline routes and community safety.

We came up to check on the cabin today and were grateful our street was plowed. Most of all, I was so appreciative that we did not have a 5 foot berm in front of our driveway. The snow plower instead aimed it to the other side of our street where there are no houses. The snow was still 2 feet deep on our driveway, but this small gesture did not go unnoticed by us as we shoveled what we could to fit the car on our driveway. Feeling grateful

This morning, I drove down Big Pines Highway today for the first time since it was re-opened. The road is perfectly clear and dry, except for a few icy spots. Snow blowers have been there, and cut a real nice line at the edge of the roads. However.... there are NO places, and I mean zero places where the snow has been cut back farther than the snow line. No shoulders are available for parking anywhere, except for a few places right at Jackson Lake. This means that there simply can not be ANY parking along this whole stretch, otherwise the people will be parking in traffic lanes. It's going to be a real cluster down there unless there is lots of parking enforcement. There should be a bunch of temporary "no parking" signs placed along the entire stretch of road, but there are none

Probably because Phelan Rd. is County, not State.

Good point. The notice did mention Beekley. Is that Caltrans? The Snowline notice about bus pickups mentioned that the bridge work at Phelan Rd & the wash is going to take a month. I hope not.
I spoke with Public Works yesterday. At this time, they are not going to work on roads that are not "maintained" by the county. They are assessing damage and may reconsider that. People can call 909 387-8040 to advise of them of road conditions that need repair - even if not maintained. You can also use their website. Hopefully, they'll consider a $500 reimbursement as they did in the snowstorm last winter or just fix some of them. It's 'Mudmageddon" in Phelan & PH.

Good point. The notice did mention Beekley. Is that Caltrans?
CA-2 is a state highway. CA-138 is a state highway. Sometimes, instead of "CA" (California) it says "SR" (State Route). Interstates like I-15 are Federal, but maintained by the state.
Everything else is either county, city, or private.

There is not estimated time that Hwy 2 will reopen right now. Our crews have done a good job at cleaning up the mud and debris from the area. We are waiting to hear back from our Bridge Crew to evaluate any damages to the bridge and to give us confirmation to open it for travelers.

Interesting. We were scheduled for an outage on Wednesday and it was rescheduled to the 18th. I'm wondering if that means our road will be closed a day or two later? I guess I better call the number and find out huh? Busy schedule and don't want to be locked in or out lol.

I just spoke with Elijah regarding the upcoming outage and road closure. He said the previous notice was done in error for the wrong date; these road closures are always scheduled the same day as the planned power outage. The outage is Monday Dec 18, and Apple & Evergreen will be closed from 7:30am to 4pm (or later). They will go around to all homes this Thursday or Friday to notify residents, and recommend moving your vehicle to a side street and walking in/out. The crane will be positioned towards the upper part of Evergreen and Apple.
