Another Invasion: Lewis's Woodpecker
« on: Oct 11, 03, 01:27:02 AM »
Coincident with the novelty of Pinyon Jays in the area, there have been several reports of a "veritable infestation" of Lewis's Woodpeckers. These are at Jackson Lake.

They appear ALL DARK, not at all like the contrasting red, white and black of the common Acorn Woodpecker. But with the proper lighting, the fortunate can see their red face, gray collar, pink belly and glossy green back.

Their behavior is slightly different from the Acorn Woodpecker, too. The Lewis's will perch in a prominent place like a dead branch and then sally forth to catch an insect on the wing often returning to the same place.
