Been having problems with intermittency of my DSL signal the last month or so.  Called Verizon and they ran a test and said that my download speed of 2.83MHps is too fast up here in Wrightwood to run without intermittency and so they cut it down to 1.5MHps and said that that should take care of the problem.  Here's the real problem:  from their end this solution is wonderful since they're giving me 40% less bandwidth for the same cost per month, thus increasing their profit.  I'm going to call them back and get my old 2.83MHps reinstated.  This is ridiculous.  If it was too fast to run without intermittency, why wasn't I having a problem with it at that speed for the last 10 years?  Do you follow me?  I think they train their employees to reduce it to a slower speed any time someone complains about intermittency, as it's in the best interest of their bottom line.  Arrgh!
On another note, there is a orange and white sign near the post office that says "High-speed INTERNET available here. Into Data Communications  844-829-3993. Excede"  Has anyone tried this company?  Do they offer a better internet connection at a more reasonable price than Verizon?  How about Dish Network Internet?  Has anyone tried it?  Thanks.

Excede is another  satellite  provider like Hughes Net etc.. Capped data plans. High speeds but big time latency issues that are inherent to satellite providers.

All these times people have complained about Verizon and DSL, I have sat here thinking, "What are they talking about? Works great here." Now I know what you are talking about. Anyone else in the East Canyon area having such a sluggish internet and inability to stream? We have turned off the router and modem several times and restarted and it still is terrible. If I call Verizon to complain, will I get one of the foreign people who try to tell me it is MY problem and not Verizons?

Hi Sweet Neighbor, it's because half the neighborhood is home today (Serrano Sr are done, etc..) streaming, using internet etc.  Anytime Students, teachers, weekenders etc are here, the internet is very, very slow. We're also practically at the end of the line from the center of town substation, unfortunately for us, here in EC we get crumbum service.  Turn off the "wifi" on your mobile device and any other wifi things you might have, that helps us a lot. How's your pup?

Twinkie... 3Pink just gave you some good advice. And, yes.. if you call Verizon for your DSL you will likely get a friendly person in a foreign country that will start by telling you to unplug everything in your house.  (They will not immediately admit they're in a foreign country.. but you can squeeze it out of them.)  I think the unplug everything is just part of their script. They will also take your cell #to call you back. That is a ruse. They will disconnect you and not call you back.  That has been my experience anyway. Lagomorph.. has a number in this thread to get through to someone in the U.S. You know if they say "I'm in Iduhooo" they may not actually be here.  cheryl o7o

Thanks 3PinkRoses and tcaarabians for the responses.  This has been going on since yesterday.  It is so frustrating.  I hope it calms down soon because I  only stream for TV and am having withdrawals!  haha.  3Pink, I will send you a message on Facebook about my pooch.

Just moved to the area,  Verizon is no longer taking any new customers, or if you cancel your service or move to a different location you wil no longer be able to get DSL and be at the mercy of  satellite Internet. If anyone knows a way around this  I would greatly appreciate it, would love to have DSL.  Thanks!

PBrady... Cancelling your service is why I still have mine in my late-Mother's name. All I wanted to do was take her name off and change it to mine. But, you have to cancel first and I was not going to take the chance that I would somehow be thrown into a wait-list for DSL service.  So, Mom lives on for now. I do pay her bill.. I think she would appreciate that.  I don't have much of a problem with my DSL here in P.H. I think those of you that have multiple needs and larger download needs do have a problem.

Not that the consumer should be made to wait for service, but Frontier is making statements that things will begin to improve when they take over after Verizon's blatant neglect.  Ignore the headline below, BTW.  Personally I think it would be quite miraculous to see FiOS deployments to somehow begin again.  That would take government funding.  If Wrightwood ends up with fiber from the company mentioned elsewhere on this site, and they can deliver on all of the other things that come with being a service provider then good for you guys.

On the copper side, we actually have a playbook that describes in detail how to upgrade the Verizon architecture to what I would say is next-generation broadband capabilities," McCarthy said. "It starts with some building blocks and that is one of the things we'll focus on out of the gate...........I think in this case it might be replacing some electronics, but it's not a heavy lift from a construction perspective," McCarthy said. "By putting in a shelf and next-generation capabilities, whether it's VDSL, ADSL2+, or all the different flavors you can use to serve the different loop lengths in a market you achieve the ability to bring a fresh product set into an area at a fairly low cost.
What the Frontier CEO describes above and makes sounds like a simple application of cash to the situation is what Verizon has neglected to do - a simple expenditure to continue feeding the machine that is providing competitive service to customers.  But words from CEOs aren't worth much.  Actions will speak volumes.

Update on our situation...it went from sluggish to absolutely NO internet. Needless to say, a technician is coming tomorrow. Any ideas what we could try in the meantime?

A few above have mentioned this, but I thought it might be useful to make it more obvious and provide a link, since this may solve Verizon problems in Wrightwood once and for all:

1 GB Fiber coming soon to Wrightwood
http://www.wrightwoodcalif.com/forum/index.php/topic,23096.0.html

Things are still in early stages, but it is work being done by a fairly local company and folks that live in Wrightwood, so the motivation is strong.

Well I guess I'll just have to wait until then :-\ Was hoping for DSL in the meantime, oh well there's always my Sprint LTE phone to keep me in the loop as I wait for the one gig fiber! ( which by the way is insane ) never knew they made Internet that fast..

Thanks.
Appreciate the replies!

Have experienced at least a dozen internet outages in less than an hour. Most I've had to unplug modem, then reconnect to the modem when the service comes back on. Can see lightening to the north. No rain or lightening here in WW.

The high desert is getting hammered by a storm right now. I can see lightning from the LA county line north of the 18 all the way across to VV, Apple Valley and beyond.

There was a spectacular lightening show over the high desert last night. We booted down everything before dusk and just watched the show. Get ready because here it comes today.  The cells I can see on the radar are currently moving along the ridges here. There are more to the east. I can hear thunder already.  Mostly to the west of us as of now. The cells aren't all that far from us.   cheryl o7o

DSL connection is offline at our home. Router & modem rebooted to no effect. Phone calls to & from cellphone to landline appears to be OK, so I'm guessing that the issue is on the DSL side...

The whole V internet system went down about 1am this morning. Interestingly, my computers were showing I was connected, as was the modem, so I tried many times to get online, rebooting the modem & checking at the Verizon site which also showed my computer as being online. Yet, I couldn't get to the Internet in any way with either computer, Kindle, or Smart TV. Finally, at 3am I finally called V and was given the message that there was an outage in our area, the technicians were working on it, but there was no anticipated time of service reinstatement. It was a conundrum since the server was showing the devices as being connected even when the whole system was down. In any case, I'm grateful the service was restored by this morning.

Agreed.  By the time I left for work around 6:15 am, the connection was back online, but on the slow side...

Our internet's been going to dial-up speed around 11pm every night, then dropping out completely at 1am for the last week or so.  I know because I work online at night.  It's strange, because usually it only gets slow on weekends, when there are more people up here in town.  I know better than to call Verizon, though, because it's completely pointless unless you enjoy wasting time.  They'll run you through a bunch of BS, and will admit it's BS if you talk to the "tech" enough, but they have to run you throw it, checking your router and blaming anything but them before they can send the complaint to the corporate office.  God I hate Verizon.

Anyway, my only hope has been that they're upgrading infrastructure at night.  Please don't anyone kill my hope.
