American Flag Etiquette
« on: Jan 04, 25, 12:33:42 PM »
In case you were wondering why flags are half staff for so long:

"According to a proclamation signed by then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, because Carter is a former president, flags are to remain at half-staff for 30 days from the day of Carter’s death.

This is the longest period possible for the flags to fly at half-staff, reserved for the death of the sitting president or former presidents, per the proclamation.

Should the sitting vice president, chief justice (current or retired) of the Supreme Court, or the sitting speaker of the house die, flags would be ordered to half-staff for 10 days from the day of death."

The American Flag is not a decoration, an advertisement, nor a political party statement. It is not something to be altered to show support for a particular cause. (For instance, do not take a flag and color in the white stripes with a particular color to symbolize blahblahblah lives matter. Find a banner that is not a likeness of the American Flag, and then fly the American Flag above it.) It is a symbol that embodies all of America and all that it stands for, and every sacrifice every American has made for their country.

"The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart." (Flagcode8.j.)

If you have a faded or ragged flag, please give it to the VFW in Phelan to properly retire, giving our Nation's symbol it's deserved end.

"No man is an island. . . and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." J. Donne

In cases where a flag cannot be lowered, such as those permanently affixed to a pole, attaching a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the flagpole serves as an alternative symbol of mourning. This ensures that the spirit of the half-staff observance is preserved, even in situations where traditional protocols cannot be strictly followed.
