Static IP addresses can be purchased for $10 per, per month.
Certainly the permit process is months and not years. The schedule will be posted on the website when we get rolling. Quite a bit depends on the issues we run into along the way before we get a good work flow going.. Not shirking the question as much as I refuse to claim I know something that I don't, at least not to the precision that you need and at this time. The closer we get and we start working then we can extrapolate from there.

Regards,

Thank you for the reply, Wes.

"Months not years" to get the ball rolling is a plenty-good estimate for me. I'm really just looking for a rough estimate so I know how fast I should ramp up my excitement :).

I've been worried that Verizon (or their replacement, Frontier) would eventually abandon wired service and leave Wrightwood stuck with expensive and heavily capped/restricted cellular internet access...so just knowing that fiber is on the way is a very good thing.

Thank you, again!

Just want to tell you guys that an ad from Verizon just popped up in my email. It was for 2GB, $49/mo/ no contract if you have auto pay.  They should likely be more selective as to who they send that to. cheryl o7o

I just wanted to mention that the 2GB mentioned in this ad is different from the 1Gb fiber.  I don't have the ad myself but I believe they mean that they are offering a capped 2Gigabyte data plan for cellular, vs 1Gigabit speeds for the fiber.  It's the amount of the data for Verizon versus the speed of the data for the UIA fiber.

Also, Gigabit speeds are rare for US consumers, Google rolled out some 1Gb connections in test markets a few years back.  Verizon DSL is max 7Megabit/second (.007Gigabit, mathematically) here, though I don't think anyone in Wrightwood actually sees more than 3Mbps normally.  Pinon Hills is 1.5Mbps.

Edit: It seems like 1Gb speeds are becoming less and less rare, though: http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/story/310861/if-you-want-gigabit-internet-move-here/

I don't think that's necessarily true as there are a number of connections in town that are contracted at 7100/768 or 6000/600 depending on the ISP.

Sure those contract speeds aren't what is actually delivered but typical speeds are 6.13Mbps download and .67 Mbps upload are common.

That is much better than I thought; still nothing compared to 1000000000/1000000000!  Looking forward to having an option.   :2thumbsup:

I've been reading MakeUseOf.com for a couple of years, and they always have insightful articles, and even better downloadable instructions or user manuals.  Check out this one on the new 802.11ac wireless standard:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/everything-need-know-ac-routers/

In order to properly use a 1 Gb fiber connection, you need to be able to route the information to your various devices.  Otherwise, the bottleneck will be at your router.

The truth is that 1 Gbps is more about capacity then speed to any singe device. There are very few if any servers that will allow a single connection or stream to go out at 1Gbps.. The real benefit of 1 Gig is that many devices can get on their own streams without killing the connection overall. So the kids are streaming off the iPad for example, another couple of TV's are streaming NetFlix.. and none of them will really notice a slowdown.

Think of it as a Freeway with many lanes.. everyone is going 70 lets say but the there are plenty of lanes for additional cars. Whereas right now with DSL there are only 2 lanes.. adding additional cars causes a traffic jam right away.

Thank You Zubers! I just signed up for the updates! Heck! I'll climb poles and pull the fiber wire thing-a-ma-jigs if it will help! I'm sooo excited! Just the dream of not having to patiently explain our slooooow-as-molasses service to yet another Verizon rep ever again has me doing the happy dance!

Hi Wes,
can you give us a quick update where we stand now - how far that goodness-of-internet has made it into WW?
Thanks, Merlin

I called them a few weeks ago and they told me it would not be in service until the end of the year, maybe a bit longer.

My year of DSLExtreme is up and I wonder if I should sign up for another year or go with their month to month plan so I can drop them immediately when Wes Zuber's fiber comes to our house.

I haven't seen any new news on Wrightwood, but it looks like once things start moving, it *might* go pretty quick.

The situation in Helendale where UIA is currently installing is quite different from Wrightwood, but you can get an idea on how the progress is going there by reading some of the posts on:

http://helendale.net/

and

https://www.facebook.com/helendalefiber

The speed/efficiency/and apparent communication with customers through the process is impressive to me...

Thanks for posting that.  We are continuing to make progress with the behind-the-scenes prep.  You may see our employee Dylan Rhodes in your neighborhood.  He is mapping out the telephone poles in each neighborhood.

The equipment is on order and will be arriving soon.

Things are moving, but mostly behind the scenes.

Hang tight Wrightwood.  It's coming!
