I gambled that Wes will get me connected properly soon: My year of DSLExtreme was up and they offered the usual lower rate (by $5) if I sign up for another full year. But I opted to go with the month to month so that I can cancel immediately when the light begins shining brightly into our house through the fiber optic cable  :-)

Ultimate Internet is working diligently on our 1 gig fiber project for Wrightwood. Currently, we are mapping all the telephone poles in Wrightwood to plan the network. You will see our guy Dylan Rhodes in an orange shirt out and about. He may ask to come in your backyard to see the numbers on the telephone pole. He has an ID. He is a high schooler which is why he is out and about on weekends and such. Once we have all the phone poles mapped out, we can work on permits and a plan. It's all coming together. Can't give you a time frame of course, which is what I know you want, except to say that it's coming!

Joanne Hensley, so much is happening, but it all just takes time. Beginning of the year you will start to hear more updates and perhaps timelines.

What would you like to know? Ultimate Internet has just completed the survey of the utility poles. We are going to be bringing it overhead on the phone poles. It will be 1 gig fiber, which is some of the fastest internet in the country, faster than Fios. Many, many time faster than FIOS. It is in the permitting process. Expect to see more information in January. Watch that site, and I will post here. You will also see signage go up in town at the old ADMO building on Hwy 2 at the bottom of Park. The price will be $70 with no installation fees, no limits, and no contract. The incoming fiber main feed is being installed this week, and we will progress from there. We live local and Ultimate Internet has been in business for almost 20 years. It's really coming...

I don't have access to Facebook. So I have a question; if I have underground utilities does this mean the line from the pole to my house will be buried or will it be above ground?

Shelby, fiber Internet is on it's way. The main feed line is being installed this week. They pulled the line last week, and are hooking it up this week. But it will still be awhile while we are in permitting before we can install homes. I know that's not good news, but if it keeps you out of a long term contract that will be better for you. I should know more in the next few weeks about a timeline.

I've signed up and haven't got any updates by that method but have posted Laura Kellerman Zuber's post as soon as they appear.

Oh yeah, sorry, I meant updates beyond the equivalent of "We're working on it and it'll be ready when it's ready".  Not trying to say I don't appreciate your transposing Mrs. Zuber's posts from Facebook since I personally hope to never have to go to Facebook for news or anything else, if I can help it.

Seems to me it's a big job...we're entering winter...probably a safe bet that there won't be any specific "good" news until summer.

Personally I think the actual completion of this project wont take that long.   I think its all of the bureaucratic wheels that turns so painfully slow.

Hi Joaquin. Sorry for the delay. I missed this post. No real news except to say it's happening. We have the Joint Pole Authority out doing their survey of the poles so that we can get permission to be on the poles. You may see them around. I believe their truck says Edison however. As soon as they are done, it goes into THEIR permitting process and we proceed. California is a land of many, many permits. Meanwhile our fiber line has been connected to our new office, and will be cross connected this week. None of this probably means much to you, but we are progressing as we planned and things are happening. I hope to have real dates soon.

Just here for the monthly update! I'd love some news if they've gotten the pole permit. Thanks!

I just saw this article this morning about a company coming up with a robust wireless broadband distribution system.  It's still young, but may be a good option to get past having to wire all these new customers in town (which will be pretty much all of us based on Verizon's recent performance).

With the backhaul already installed into town, perhaps someone could contact Starry about using Wrightwood as a pilot project for a more rural setting than their Boston pilot they're planning this summer.  Just food for thought...

Reading the article it seems it would defeat the purpose of what UIA is trying to do, which is getting that awesome and quite frankly unheard of 1GB upload and download speeds, which to my understanding can only be achieved with Fiber directly to the house.

I also think it would go against their grant.

Something similar was attempted in Wrightwood before.  In 1999 or so I worked for a company that was located above what is now The Village Grind called Media Annex.  We shared a T1 connection with a company that was also on that upstairs floor with us called Wrightwood Wireless, if I recall correctly.  Technology sure has come a long way since then, but Wrightwood Wireless didn't last very long.  I don't really remember exactly what caused them to eventually go out of business, but I do know that they had issues getting enough subscribers to install enough antennas to get full coverage, and for awhile they were offering discounts to people just for hosting an antenna.  It was a simpler time and there wasn't even DSL up here, then.  The funny thing is that a T1 is only 1.5Mb... but that seemed like so much bandwidth back in the day.

I think Media Access was simply slightly ahead of the times.  In 1999, was pretty satisfied with dial-up speed.  What we paid Verizon for a landline also covered our "internet access" pretty adequately...why pay an extra bill? I didn't feel the need to upgrade to DSL until 2003, I think.

Yeah, but at one point dial-up was by the hour.  I remember hearing that they were instituting a $20 a month charge for Unlimited AOL dial-up and it blew my mind.  So much wasted money.  That was about 1996-97, but it seems so long ago.... well I guess it was, even though 1996 itself doesn't seem all that long ago.
