Old photos from Storm
« on: Nov 11, 07, 01:02:57 PM »
I came across a few old photos, some of which are photos of photos, all of which are of poor quality.  But some are interesting--I lost all of these due to file corruption a while back, but these were left on an old work computer up here before I came down to CA.

This is me in August, 1969.  I think this was the last time I could have qualified for a modeling career of some sort...

This is me stacking Red Maple, Sugar Maple and White Birch firewood in 1976.  The groovy threads were 10-year old hand-me-downs from my older brother:

Mr. Snake is trying to keep warm around my neck about 12 years ago.  It had gotten tangled up in some fine plastic netting at an ecological field station in MN, so I cut it free.  It had minor lacerations from the netting and was cold, but seemed to be fine otherwise.

I loved it when George the Cat licked my head.  This was on an organic farm in VT.  He had the habit of somehow getting under my head in the night, resulting in a purring kitty-cat pillow.  I don't know why he liked that.  Good mouser--he used to crunch them up while sitting on my bed.

A deer taking a piece of peach from my mouth at Southwestern Research Station in  AZ.   That was awesome.  I looked like Uncle Fester in those days.  I even had a dark, long, London Fog rain-overcoat that made me look the part.  I also looked like a flasher, and got stopped by the cops once because I matched the description of a reported flasher.  Sweet!

I used to teach survival, primitive and pioneer skills to kids in Hackensack, MN.  Here I am in a snow Quinzhee that I constructed overnight on a -45F (-110F wind chill) New Year's night in 1998.   I then taught students how to make these over the next couple days.  I later added two guest bedrooms (made it a three-holer):

Giddy-up, buckaroos!  Sarah the mule was a nice and gentle ride.  She moved at my pace, which I liked.  This was at Pathfinder Ranch outside Idyllwild, CA, where students got to ride horses and mules:

While on an organic farm just south of the Twin Cities in MN, I was able to engage in every aspect of farming, even spreading manure.  It was difficult to keep the tractor's tires in-between rows, but eventually I got the hang of it:

About seven years ago I was teaching near Santa Cruz, CA and came across a decomposing whale, through which my students explored and slid on juicy guts.  I recovered a vertebrae plate that was flat and 14" wide.  I used it as a plate for a couple years after grinding the sides flat and smooth:

Mr. Bunny and I in a negative-image reflection of a mud puddle...best friends forever:

Storm:

I was reading some of your previous posts and have book marked your website.  My family and I are just starting to really appreciate survival skills.  We have been having so much fun researching different ways that people survive.  It's amazing.

We just got some books from the library about edible plants.  I don't think we'll try to eat them just yet, but maybe when we get a little more experienced we can sample them without poisoning ourselves.  LOL.

Thanks for sharing.

I noticed today that the photos above no longer exist on Photobucket so they have been uploaded to our server, as I had saved them a while back.

Storm you will be missed by many.

When I saw this photo of Storm I sent an email to an old friend of mine, Mike Powell, who was--and still is--the wrangler at the Pathfinder Ranch!

I believe Storm worked at the ranch for a time...

Here are some of his comments:

"I remember him as compassionate and forthright, a man more sinned against than sinner, and a treasure of knowledge about the world at large. Those that listened will be sure to carry on his creed."

BTW Sara the mule is still "workin' at the ranch"!
