The Space Shuttle Endeavour is being piggy backed on a 747 and is due to land at Edwards Air Force Base this Thursday, September 20th!!
So exciting, and I'd love to see it. Anyone in Forum Land know how to get close to see the low, slow fly by and see it land?

Seeing a shuttle on the back of a big plane is a sight to see. I caught the Enterprise at an airshow many years ago.

But now, seeing a shuttle just makes me sad because it reminds me that my country has decided to throw away all the work it took to get us to space.

I admit it, I'm a child of the space race of the late 60's. I grew up believing that the human race has to go to space, and that my country was the one to get it done. Somehow, knowing that we have to buy rides from Russia to even get to the space station bothers me a lot.

On Friday morning, it's scheduled to depart, and make some low passes over Lancaster/Palmdale (1500 feet above ground level) before departing the area.

Since it's scheduled to make some low passes over the Lancaster/Palmdale area, I might suggest going to Avenue N at Sierra Highway, which is a popular place for people to watch "cool stuff".

Of course, all this is subject to change, depending on weather, and whatever else could pop up.

I have been watching when Endeavour would land at Edward's for weeks now, and it keeps changing as Bob C stated. I wish there was a way to to find out the TIME once we know for sure she is arriving at Edward's. Anyone with connections that could find that out? I do not want to miss this! I saw her land at Edward's her last time on Nov. 30, 2008. (I also saw Challenger, and Columbia land back in the days they landed at Edward's all the time).
Even with my 400 mm lens, she is hard to see. I look so forward to a LOW level fly over! (Especially since my sister has my 400mm lens right now) :P

For whatever its worth, this should be the 747 that carries it: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/NASA905

Unknown whether or not they will block realtime tracking of the flight when it does get mated with the Shuttle (it wouldn't surprise me if they do block it).

I would suggest watching Dryden's website for last minute updates: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/home/index.html

I have the opportunity to get onto Edwards and I know just where I'd go...North Base Road. But...then do I go back on Friday to Ave. N and 10th West for the flyover in Palmdale Lancaster?  Oh...such fun ahead. I have a nice camera with a good lens, not that zoomable, but It will work and do the job.  :2thumbsup:

UPDATE from Dryden's page:

The SCA and Endeavour are expected to arrive in the Edwards area shortly after noon PDT Thursday, and after a brief flyover around the base, land about 12:30 p.m.

Where would the best place to wait for her to arrive at Dryden??

It was a GREAT experience!! We were off the 58 @ 20 Mule Team rd. and it flew right by us!! It was HOT, but worth it! I am so glad I went to see it. Tomorrow is another chance, try to go see it if you can. After it lands at LAX, a shuttle will never be in the air again :-(
Pictures will be posted soon!
