[i wasn't sure if this goes here or in Outdoors]

i walked the length of that ridge this morning, starting out around 4:30am.  i didn't think my various injuries would allow me to, but it was a fine hike, with the Sliver Moon rising and the quiet mountain village below.  i found this sign decomposing into the ground:

(Note by admin: image link no longer available)

it frustrates me that this ridge has no official name--how can i refer to it?  so i've downloaded a Domestic Geographic Name Report from the USGS.  i'm not sure what name i should propose--here's where i could use your help (esp. from local old-timers).  left to my own devices, i'd propose:

1. Swarthout Ridge
2. Wildcat (or Puma, Catamount, Mtn. Lion, etc.) Ridge
3. Granite Ridge
4. Wrightwood Ridge

i also need three "Authorities for Recommended Name" with your address, phone number, occupation and # of years lived in area.  "authorities" doesn't mean that you are officially an "important" person.

let me know if you are interested in being on the application and feel free to suggest serious name suggestions!

4:30am.....

Did you say AM???? ;)

Good idea on naming the ridge. Heck, I didn't know there were still "un-named" ridges.

I'm curious. I couldn't read some of words on that sign. What did the entire sign appear to say? I see "Wrightwood", and SB county, and what appeared to be an elevation.

i've been sick for the past month, so i'm trying different things to see what cures me (or ails me more).  i wanted to get my internal workings moving along, so after getting up around 1:30 this morning due to too much congestion and coughing, i hiked up to the base of the landslide.  then, being bored but not wanting to do anything, i decided to hike that ridge--i'd only been up there once before.

i'd heard that there were some recent mountain lion sightings up behind Jensens, so i wanted to go up before sunrise so that i might be up there at dawn, when i think mtn. lions are active.  a friend also gave me directions to where there might be an outcropping of biotite (black) mica sheets--about as large and as thin as regular sheets of paper.  but i didn't find either of these natural wonders.  there is an amazing lack of trash up there.

the sign might read:

WRIGHTWOOD
[Wildlife?]Project in Cooperation
with San Bernardino County
Elevation 7620
San Bernardino ________

No, "Storm Ridge".  Why not.  It catches the first of the storms coming from the north and attracts a ton of lightning.  Storm Ridge is a great name.

here are the ones i like the most thus far--with input from others (i knocked a few off--but still let me know what you think):

Hornblende Ridge (speaks to a black mineral you can find up there, sometimes in abundance)
Pinyon Ridge (Pinyon Pines are up there--some look VERY old)
Storm Ridge (for the weather events)
Wrightwood Ridge (this would be very appropriate, given it's location)
