i guess Lonely Ridge would deter some people from going up there--less people to bother you!

i didn't mean to expose a private sanctuary, Lonelyguy... ;)

I have hiked this ridge several times from the end of the road at Table Mountain all the way down to Sheep Creek.  I also was part of a firefighting effort that stopped the "Scout Fire" along this ridge back in the early nineties.  The downed signs and broken whisky bottles where there when I first fought fire on that ridge a long time ago and I am glad to here that they still remain so today.  I always refered to this ridge as the Swarthout Ridge being named after our Valley and I thing this would be a good name for it officially.

Storm Ridge does sound nice but it really doesn't describe that ridge line. If it was called Storm Ridge people would automatically associate the area with storms and that just isn't true - most of the time.  (sorry storm as it would be neat to have named after you but it really wouldn't be Wright ;)

Swarthout Ridge much better describes the northern ridge line of the Swarthout Valley.

"Serious" names only?  Criminy, arent there a lot of places that dont have serious names?  BTW, what did the sign say?  I, too, couldnt read a good part of it.  Perhaps the sign should be moved to the museum.

A woman has a right to change her mind...so I'm withdrawing my vote for Storm, even though it's a nice name, and going with Swarthout which seems logical.  ::)

Are there lots of rocks on that ridge?    What about Rocky Ridge?  If there is a road that leads up to it, we could call it Rocky Road.    :D

I personally like Storm Ridge - but mainly because it's Storm who is submitting the name, not because of storms, but I admit that that could be confusing.  As to Swarthout - how is that pronounced?  Swarth-out, Swart-hout, or Swar-thout - or none of the above?  I've never known and always wondered.

I tend to agree with you on this one Surfer_Dude. That is the ridge that I see everyday, out my window, while sitting at my computer. I most associate it with watching the shadow of the setting sun move slowly up to its peak. I was thinking "Sun Shadow Ridge", "Shadow Ridge" or "Penumbra Ridge".

Sun Shadow Ridge now that is a cool sounding name for the ridge.

San Andreas Ridge
Nameless Ridge
Table Ridge

Hmmm.... :eyebrows:
I've also hiked that ridge end to end. Lots of pinons. Lots of gnats in the summer.

Gnat Ridge. That has some kind of ring to it.

I like Swarthout Ridge.

(Then let's add "Nolena Knoll" on one of the prominant rises.  ;D )

The only name I've ever heard it referred to is Table Mountain Ridge. Other than that it's the ridge on the north side of town.

Old time Forest Service folks have always refered to the ridge as East Table Mountain which to me never did sound like a proper name.  It is important to remember that once you give a ridge an official name it will be called that forever.  Since this ridge currently does not have an official name registered with the USGS I think we should be very careful on selecting a proper name.  Since storm came up with this idea many people want to name the ridge after him which would be a nice accolade for him but I really do not like the sound of Storm Ridge.  It reminds me to much of Storm King Mountain where 14 firefighters were killed in the line of duty fighting a wildfire in Colorado.  So I have a couple of ideas, What is Storms real name? Maybe we could name it after him using his real name.  Or how about "Sumner Ridge" named after Sumner Wright the founder of our village.  Perhaps Storm can gather up all of the suggested names for the ridge and have a poll on this web site where the community could vote and everyone can put in their opinion.

Lets not wrap the name selection quickly, maybe one on of us will have an epiphany.

I couldn't agree more and don't think Table Mtn Ridge is right either - plus there's the large saddle where the natural gas line enters the valley and that separates the ridge from Table Mtn.

I'm sure Nolena would like to include some derivative of (natural) gas in the name  ;)

storm is his real and complete name

I've got two ideas:

Ruffles -  because Ruffles have ridges  :2thumbsup:

iRidge - the all new iRidge! It holds 1000 hikers!
