Post by: Elk on Feb 08, 08, 12:36:36 PM: Pile burning in the context of the forest service is the burning of piles of organic waste like branches, limbs, leaves, needles and other debris from clearing fuels from the forest. Often they will chip the larger limbs but pile up the rest of the debris. When conditions are satisfactory they will then ignite the piles and burn them while being closely monitored by fire crews.

The USFS has been burning many piles recently along Big Pines / N4. I am glad to see they are staying on top of this and using the opportunity to burn while the snow is still on the ground and the conditions are favorable.

The pile burning of vegetation continues in the Table Mountain area.
In the past week over 500 piles of fuel reduction slash has been burned.
Crews will continue to burn while conditions are favorable. Tomorrow they will be concentrating on areas just West of the Big Pines Visitor Center near Hwy 2.

Forest service called this morning about the pile burning going on. They wanted to notify the camps and residents of the Big Pine area that they are trying to burn as many piles as they can before the snow leaves. They are working the south facing slops first because they will become the first to dry out. They are burning day and night and they are not watching all of the piles burn, depending on the location of each pile. With the snow coverage they are able to light and leave without the threat of the fire spreading. We have been asked if we see something out of the ordinary to please call dispatch. It never hurts to be on top of things. At this time they are burning 200 to 300 pile a day.
