Info on the picture of Twin Lakes with the old fountain:
The little girl circled in the picture is my mother, Billie Morgan. She is the daughter of Al and Grace Schobert. My grandparents bought our Wrightwood property in 1939, and lived full time in Wrightwood from 1965 to about 1979. Since my mother was about 8 years old in the picture and was born in 1933, we estimated the postcard picture was taken in about 1941. It is an actual postcard.
The two adults next to my mother were of the Risk family. They owned a cabin right below the lake. I don't have any other information about them.
My brother and I spent all of our summers and holiday vacations staying with my grandparents in Wrightwood.
We learned to swim in the Burn's pool and spent alot of time swimming with their son's Gary, Chad and Steve. When we weren't swimming, we were climbing every bit of the the mountains around Wrightwood. We learned to fish in Jackson Lake.
We spent alot of time with Richard Holme's boys, Steve and Doug, making forts and playing in a tree house that was the center piece of Robin Circle, that we had named "Fort Wilderness".
We have many albums containing pictures of Wrightwood dating back to 1940. I'll look through them and scan any pictures that may be of interest to the general public. I know we have pictures of the old Holiday Foods store, perhaps "Dury's", downtown after a major snow storm and pictures of the 1969 mudslide.
If anyone remembers my grandfather, Al Schobert, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
At 46, while never having been a "full time" Wrightwood resident, Wrightwood is where I grew up, and I still consider it "home".
Robert W. Morgan

Hi Mr. Morgan,
Thank you for your very interesting pictures and stories. You're lucky to have such wonderful memories of growing up in WW. I look forward to your future posts. :D
-
Hi Wrightwood,
As my teenagers are fond of saying, all of your photo's are "tight" or "sweet". Some older folks might even say "awesome". Would I be dating myself if I just said "cool" as opposed to "neat-o"? Ah, heck...your photo's are the "cat's pajamas!" Whatever generation, I think you get the point.
Keep up the good work! ;D
-
Robert,
How wonderful that you have such wonderful memories of your childhood and spending your vacations here. Thank you so much for sharing your memories with us and I will look forward to any other photos you might want to share of days gone by and our village. Again thank you!

Twin Lakes use to be a popular hang out. Notice the "old Fountain" in the far background in this 1948 picture.
Locals would even swim the lake at night.

Will we have a winter like that pictured in a flyer about Wrightwood in the early 80's?

I remember the mudslide of 1969 very vividly. I'm trying to find the picture of my brother and I standing on the roof of that very home in the above posted picture. When I do, I'll post it.
I was 14 years old and remember standing at highway 2 where the flood channel crossed the highway. It looked like cement with boulders the size of cars just barely made it under the bridge. It was pretty scary! If I remember correctly, the highway was damaged and the town was cut off from Hwy 138 for a period of time. My mother remembers the mudslide of the 40s which took out much of Lone Pine Canyon road.
While the county/state has provided a very nice "spillway" for future mudslides, there was an article not too many years ago in the Los Angeles Times that talked about geologists saying that there is a fissure between the Heath Creek and Sheep Creek mudslides, connecting them. Geologist believe that eventually the two slides will connect and the mountain between the two will come down, taking out much of Wrightwood.
Let's hope not!
We need rain, but let's hope it comes in manageable amounts, hopefully snow, without a quick thaw as the result of a warm spring.
-
Robert,
Thank you for sharing with us your fantastic photos and your incredible memories.....Let's hope with the extreme dry weather we have had that another flood like that does not happen. Those pictures of the snow and the floods just remind us of the devistation that mother nature can cause in these mountains. Let's pray for a safe winter for all! Again thank you and the Webmaster for the photos and the story to go along with it.
:D

Dear Robert,
What fun to see the vintage photos on this website. I am Joyce Floyd, Secretary at the Wrightwood Historical Society. We have some copies of the photos you display. However, there are several that we do not have. We are always anxious to add to the archives at the Museum. Would it be possible to get copies? You may also enjoy seeing the photos that we have. Do you live in Wrightwood? The Museum is open every Saturday from 10 to 2. However, I would enjoy meeting you and showing you the collections that are stored. My number is 249-5385. Keep up the terrific work! What a service to our community!

My family has owned our Wrightwood property since the late 1930s. The cabin on the NorthWest corner of Pine and Robin was built by my Grandfather and Great Uncle ealier than that. If the owners of that property would like some picture of that cabin some 50 years ago, we can accomodate them.
My mother grew up in Wrightwood, (they were weekenders and never lived full time there). Being born in 1955, my recollection doesn't begin until the late 50s.
I am very interested in the history of Wrightwood and have many fond memories of the town in the 60s.
Yes, I believe we can contribute some copies of our Photos. Most of the photos we have involved relatives and the cabin. Not much interest to most people. Personally I have found the photo archive we have of our property very satisfying.
For example, look what our cabin looked like in 1939:
I took this picture last week:
The trees have gotten alot bigger and the area around us alot more crowded. ;)
Our cabin is one of the first 100 hundred cabins in Wrightwood.
We have pictures spanning the 60+ years documenting the changes that have taken place.
It was so good to see the picture posted by the webmaster of the "lodge" which was located near where the community building is today. My mother remembers playing witht the daughter of the family who owned it in the 40s.
We are still weekenders. My mother, who is in many of the pictures that I have posted will be up this coming weekend. I believe she will drop in and visit the Historical Museum this Saturday as we have in the past.
I believe my mother and I have had a conversation with you before. My mother talked about your horse getting loose and ending up on our property. I believe you lived on Pine and Robin at the time. (That is if you are the same person we had a conversation with at the museum.)
I will be up in a couple of weeks and would love to see some of the old archives that you have. By then I should have copies of some of pictures.
-
What fantastic photos and stories this posting has provided. It is so nice to have all of you share your stories and thank you for sharing your photos with us! I am always interested in seeing the photos of days gone by of our village and the historical aspects of the photos are so wonderful. Again, thank you for taking the time to share them with all of us.

This is just awesome seeing all these vintage photos.
Great Work Wrightwood and RobertW.
Somewhere in the deep dark regions of my closet, I have some pictures that I inherited from my parents. When I moved here, I never really remembered being here ever before although I always had these strange feelings that I had. But then I found out from my grandparents that we were always brought up here to snow play as they used to live in SB. Then I guess before I was even a twinkle in my parents eyes, they used to come up here on their dates. Heck, I even have a picture somewhere of almost a foot or more of snow on the ground in SB somewhere. But the pictures I really like to see, although they sadden me some, are the pictures of all the creeks and streams that used to run up here year round. :'(
<sigh> Maybe someday, we'll see them run again.
In the meantime, thanks for sharing the photo's and the stories. It's so much fun to look back (sometimes). Sometimes it just makes ya feel like.....well........ not as young as ya used to be. ;)

excellent pictures!!
thank you all very much for sharing :)

I have lived up here for almost 13 years and I have to say that these photos of Wrightwood are interesting and educational. The reason I say this is because I love history and I've always wondered what Wrightwood looked like in the past, these pctures give me an idea, thanks for the great pictures

These 50's postcards had previously been posted with incorrect information. With the original postcards in hand I was able to scan them with better detail.
The 1st postcard shows Emil's (sp?) Mountain Store a contractor office and a realty on the far right.

Wow what a fabulous and fun thread this is! It is such a pleasure to see all of the pictures of days gone by and it gives us an idea of the history of our village. It is really a wonderful gift you are giving us by sharing the photos and memories you have. I for one, thank you so much for caring enough to share!
;)

Wow, this was /really/ interesting to me. :D Though I've lived here my entire life, I'm only 17, and not much has changed, really. ;) Great photos everyone, thank you for sharing!

Anyone remember all the large pine trees that were smack dab in the middle of the streets? Here is my mother c. 1940 sleding down Pine. (It was safer in those days) Note the large Pine tree in the middle of the street!

When and how did wrightwood get it's Name ???
John Robinson in "The San Gabriels", 1991 edition, page 292, writes:
"Sumner Wright [businessman, cattle rancher and apple grower in Swarthout Valley] suffered financial hardships, too. To recoup his fortunes, he decided to subdivide his Swarthout Valley property for homesites.....The proposed new community was named "Wrightwood." The sales campaign got underway in 1924.....distributed a brochure extolling the virtues of leisure living "in the Kingdom of the Four Seasons at Wrightwood Mountain, California."
Robinson' s source was a book by Pearl Comfort Fisher entitled "The Mountaineers" published in 1972. He notes that, "This book is a history of the Wrightwood-Big Pines area written by a local historian there."
Now that is a book I would like to find!
-
Thanks Pinesent. I did find alot more info in Yahoo search "History Of Wrightwood" and http://wrightwoodcalifornia.com

Were those shots of the guy waterskiing behind the power boat the result of a stunt, or what? It's hard to imagine the lake was ever large enough to accomodate a power boat, let alone a boat pulling a skier.

-
Wow! I love these pictures. Whatever happened to Twin Lakes? Is that still a big hangout for the local kids? I haven't heard anything about it before today.

Im wondering if anyone of the Historical Society had the "foresight" to photograph/videotape our first Annual Christmas Light parade.

Her picture used to be up in the VideoZone.

It was directly across from Holiday Hill (Mt High East). Mountain High did manage and/or owned it in the 80's.

WOW!!!
For a lot of people it gives a sense of growing up and remembering the past....for others, it's a way of seeing the history of a community.
These pictures and stories are truly awesome....thanks for sharing them.
WOW!! :o

The first photo below was taken in 1938. It's known as Lurkers Place and Lurkers Service. It is now the Sawmill.
The building was built between 1925 to 1928.
In 1992 it was bought by Cyrus & Viginia Leeper and leased to various deli type businesses including; Mexican, Italian, The Coal Car Deli, The Two Sisters Deli and the Walker Deli.

Haven't been to Crystal Lake since a small child early 60's. Just curious if anyone has been out there since the fire? Last I heard the roads were closed but that was a while back. I was thinking it might be a nice drive and way to spend the day in the near future.
Its amazing the store didn't burn down.

Road is still closed and will remain so for some time. You can take SR 39 only as far as the East fork.

I have a couple of old WW photos, one of them of Big Pines with the arch and really, really old cars and the other one a couple of people with part of the our old zoo in the background taken during winter.I'd love to share them here but I dont have a scanner yet, if someone would want to add them for me that would be great!
**the make/model of the cars should be able to date the photos.

I'd be more than happy to scan and post them.
Send me an email or PM so we can arrange it.

Beautiful photos of Big Pines. The animal park picture is the best one I've seen. I'd guess the cars parked in front of the building are 1928-30. What a fun place Big Pines must have been in the early years!
-
Wow those are excellent old photographs of our area, thanks so much for sharing them.
-
:D I especially llike the Jackson Lake photo. That's the time I was swimming in it . It looks just as I remember it.
-
I've always heard it referred to as the Big Pines Zoo and recently learned that it was actually the Big Pines Animal Park.
Another urban legend I hear from time to time relates to the animals escaping from the cages during a large snow storm and just walking out. This just isn't true.
There's lots of unanswered questions about the Big Pines Animal Park that our Forum readers can help with. The 3 old photos that damtam1 furnished included one of the best examples of the Big Pines Animal Park to date. We know there's more out there somewhere and would love the opportunity to scan them for historical purposes.
Please look through those old boxes of photos and albums and see if you have any pictures, letters, brochures, maps, etc. of the old Big Pines Animal Park. In fact anything related to the history of Wrightwood is of interest.
Here's a few photos taken this week of the Animal Park remains at Big Pines:

I've corrected my posting as it was known as Big Pines Animal Park, not Big Pines Wild Animal Park.

What great photos! I really enjoyed Pat Krieg/(sorry I forgot her name book on Wrightwood too. There is so much history in this town. One should really take the time to enjoy some of the stories here. Thansk for sharing.

Where exactly are the remains of the Big Pines Animal Park?
-
About 1/8" mile past Big Pines Visitor Center on the way up to Table Mountain. (on the west side)

That's the old lion cage.
There are the remains of other animal enclosures near the existing Big Pines building.

Check back a couple of pages in this topic and you'll see photos of the animal park.

What part of town was the white squirrel in?
He was always seen around our area, Robin Circle, Lark. That pictures is taken in our front yard in Robin Circle. One summer, in the late 60s we came up to stay with our Grandparents and he was gone. We were told somebody had shot it.

As a kid, there was an albino squirrel in my grandma's neighborhood in Granite City, Illinois that would hang out in the park. I haven't seen one since; never realized they were so rare.
-
I remember that white squirrel years ago, too. But, I wonder if anyone had gotten close enough to verify that it was albino. Only looking at the eyes will tell you if it was or not.

We would feed it peanuts from our porch. It was a bonifide albino, pink eyes and all.

Does anyone remember the three legged coyote that was around in the 60's and early 70's?

Also, I was shocked to see on page three of this post, the picture of the 5th and 6th grade class from 1956. There was my dear sweet aunt Kathy when she was a little girl. Kathleen Boyles in the second row third from the left. When I sent her the link it made her cry as she spent the next 7 hours crusing the forum history pages. Thank-you so much for the opportunity to make her day!! She remembers this town so well growing up here. During this time, her father, my grandfather (Thomas A. Boyles Sr.) was trying to sell real estate out of the Blue Ridge while bar tending, to anyone who might listen to him. Tom Pinard has a great story about the night he first rolled into town and announced that he was going to start a newspaper to my grandfather and all the others who were hanging out at the Blue Ridge. Yes Tom you got the last laugh.

This was my grandfather's and grandmother's! John "Lyle" Manion. They owned it in the 50's, I think (before I was born). I have pictures somewhere of my sister as a toddler there and she was born in 1950. When I lived there-late 60's to 80-ish- and my grandparents would come to visit, we'd go in for a burger once in a while. I've not seen much about it before so this was a treat to find!

8mm film from 1956: https://archive.org/details/con_000048
Footage of the Mt. High ski area begins @ 8:22, though there is some footage immediately prior that looks like it may be from the area near Mt. Top Cafe. 10:44 is a brief shot of the parking lot, and a glimpse in the background of some of the "snow play madness" circa 60 years ago. It ends with a shot of 138. The player is kinda touchy, so if you get an error trying to fast forward the slider to 8:22 just refresh the page and try it again.
Super bonus points to the person who can accurately address the home shown at 6:30. I tried to have fun with it and best I can tell is that it's in the Upland, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga (Red Hill, maybe) area, but couldn't locate it specifically.
