Last year our family spent a long weekend camping in Borrego Springs at the Palm Canyon Resort and we got to hand feed hummingbirds. My 13 year old was the most taken with the experience and would spend hours feeding the birds. The caretakers of the campground and hotel are very happy to help you with getting birds to come to you and will sit with you on the porch teaching you all their tricks. We went 2 weekend in a row last October and plan on going back this year! A few hours away is an easier trip than Alaska  :2thumbsup:
