Title: Abandoned baby jay
Post by: Iris on Jun 15, 11, 08:55:39 PM
For the first time this year I have a jay nest on my porch. It appears that the baby has been abandoned. It is sitting in its nest just staring out  :( and the first eve the parents have not been with it. I was advised to give it until morning to see if they return.

If they do not return is anyone local willing to foster the bird and care for it for whatever time needed or tell me what to do if someone is not able to take it?

Kind of sad seeing his/her little face just staring out...

You can try elacy7@earthlink.net she works for wildhaven up in arrowhead.  I have taken her a bird and an injured squirrel.  She has quite a few birds she hand feeds for Wildhaven Animal Sanctuary.   She is very informative.

We used to get them in at the zoo. They eat about every 2 hours.  :o

No response yet.

I put the nest in a shallow plastic bin last night with a warm pack because it was out twice and couldn't get back up as the nest was about 6+ feet off the deck. All I had to feed according to what I found online was a small amount of wet dog food for my older dog and I fed some in a syringe. Parents are around today as it walks around the deck trying to learn to use its wings, but have not seen them feed.

I don't know what to do  :( Trying to leave it alone since mom and dad are around but don't know if its eating....my dogs are not real happy being kept inside!

I took a pic, not the greatest, is totally zoomed in. Only I can't recall how to get it on here. Did get it in the gallery but......I will have to do some searching.

Thanks for the suggestions AW.

Unfortunately the bird fell off the deck last night while out of the nest trying to fly, was put back in its nest. Checked on it before going to bed and it was tucked in sleeping. This morning I found it dead in the nest. My mom found it last night and thought it may have injured itself when it fell.  :(

I talked to a few wildlife professionals I know and did what they told me, protect it from predators and don't intervene more than necessary. We tried.....

Maybe something was wrong with the bird to begin with and the parents sensed it and abandoned it on purpose.  I've heard parent birds do this but am not sure if it is accurate information.

Either way, I'm so sorry that the birdie died and thank you for trying to save it.  I did something similar about a month ago.
