Title: Another new local history book
Post by: HistoryBuff on Jan 12, 05, 08:10:08 PM
I have been reading a new local history book recently. Although it isn't specifically about Wrightwood, there is a chapter called, "Acorn Lodge" that has some information on Wrightwood's history.
The book is called, The Man Who Built Camp Cajon.
It is primarily about the life of William Marion Bristol. I guess this book is the first in a series they named, Trails and Tales of the Cajon Pass -by Sandy and John Hockaday. 174 pages of text w/ lots of historic photos. Hockaday did a good job. I am reading a copy I got from John. I guess there is a website that will be up, probably, sometime today, (1-12-05): BuckthornPublishing.com

By the way, does anyone know how to contact Mal and/or Ruth Doherty, if that is still possible? They are grandkids, I understand, of W. M. Bristol. They would really like to see this book but noone knows how to let them know it is finally out. Thanks.

HistoryBuff,
The Cajon Pass does have some great history and this book sounds worth getting.

Welcome to the forum!

Our Wrightwood History webpage has a couple of articles written by George on the subject:

http://www.wrightwoodcalif.com/WrightwoodHistorical/WrightwoodRoots/c04cmpcjn.pdf
http://www.wrightwoodcalif.com/WrightwoodHistorical/WrightwoodRoots/c05cmpcjn.pdf

Doing a search for the book I found a couple of interesting websites that I had not previously seen:

http://havasumagazine.com/bristol.htm
http://www.theroadwanderer.net/RT66cajon.htm
http://www.cart66pf.org/Map/66west2.htm

I've tried to locate the book "The Man Who Built Camp Cajon" and can't find it. Is it available to the public?
