Title: Wrightwood on Film
Post by: Mountain_Witch on Jan 08, 03, 08:57:30 PM
A while back (about 2yrs ago) there was a movie filmed in Wrightwood for a made for HBO movie called The Day The World Ended (or something like that). I was wondering if anybody happened to have seen it as I don't have HBO or if you know if it has been released on video yet? Stars where Randy Quaid (cool person), Nastassja Kinski (no comment).

The reason being, I was an extra in the silly thing and would like to see what kind of B movie it turned out to be.

Oh, did anyone else participate in being an extra?
and
Have there ever been any other movies filmed in Wrightwood before?

I've nebber heard of that film.  Being an extra can be fun though, providing one doesn't do it for a living.  60.00 a day doesn't go very far.  My better half did it for a few years.  Almost made it to SAG membership.  Now, she lives with me in our windowless shed perched far up in the hills.  I tried it, too, for awhile, mostly on "The District."  Not even my 15 minutes of fame.  More like, a few minutes of obscurity.  Please, no autographs   8)

There has been quite a variety of filming in Wrightwood over the years.

A looooong time ago, back in the late 70's, the TV show "Emergency" was filmed up here. I was a waitress at Little John's restaurant at the time, and the two stars came in and had lunch. They were really rude and didn't even leave a tip.

Other tv shows and bits for movies have been done throughout the area. It's kind of fun to watch the filming and then see how it turned out in the end.

If it is already out wouldn't Nancy at the Videozone have ordered it specifically because it was filmed here?   Just a thought.   I might give her a call when the vzone opens.

Wrightwood,

It wasn't that one, it was the one were they built a prop diner across from Mile High Pizza. I was one of the "nosey town people". It was fun to see what goes into the making of a movie. That and to get paid for standing around all day, eating their food only to have them use you for a few minutes in two scenes was kinda cool too. They asked me if I wanted to continue being an extra in the rest of their filming down at their studio, but I don't drive so I didn't get to. :(  Oh well, it was fun to be able to get to do what I did.

I'll second the nomination for James Garner being the nicest actor....and he has a connection to Wrightwood, too!

They filmed an episode of The Rockford Files (yes, I know, I'm dating myself) in Wrightwood - at the Yodeler and Lyle's.  The shoot lasted two days.  I remember everyone milling around the village trying to get a closer look at James Garner...no luck for anyone on the first day.  Everyone had the "what a jerk - typical Hollywood actor" feeling for him.

The second day of shooting ended early and while they were packing up equipment, Mr. Garner got a barstool and placed it in middle of the street and sat there and signed autographs for at least 3 hours.  He talked with everyone and told stories and apologized for not being available the day before.....

It's nice to hear that he really is a nice guy.....

Well now, I  was wondering if there were other folks in your wonderful burgh who had dabbled in show business, and it's nice to see that there are.  I myself am an actor, and at some point want to base myself in Wrightwood, as I've written previously.  At first, it would be wise for me to be close to the action, so I'll try to live close to the playground, but as soon as I feel I can handle the commute, I want to be living in Wrightwood.  I will promise you here and now that if I pull the jerk movie star routine, you may all feel free to drag me behind the woodshed for a case or two of whoopass!  :D

Before the movie in question they filmed parts of "Black Sheep", with Chris Farley, and "Larger than Life", with Bill Murray right here.
Somewhere there is a "B" or worse movie about cowboys, injuns, and tha cavalry which accidently has my car in the background.
The videozone has the two movies I mentioned. :D

Mountain Witch,
The movie you were referring to "The Day The World Ended" that featured Randy Quaid and partly filmed here in Wrightwood was aired today on Cinemax at 11:15 am!  What a conincidence that you were just asking about it!  I don't know when it wil be shown again because I did not see it on the play listing.  If I find out any other information I will let you know.

I know that there was a movie filmed here sometime in the 30's or 40's at Holiday Hill,(which is now Mtn. High east). I belive it was called Snow Queen, but so far I havent been able to locate it on video. If anyone has any more info on it I would love to know ! Also Ive  heard that actor Lee Marvin was a long time resident  of Wrightwood and used to throw some Hollywood parties at his home here !

:)The Day the World Ended was filmed for HBO.  They used Mile High Pizza as their post office, built the fake diner across the street and filmed a lot of the outdoor scenes around Cedar, Evergreen and Apple.  (Mostly driving scenes).  You can see a lot of the street signs if you look carefully.  A word of caution, though.  It was a really bad movie.  You'd think with the cast it would have been better. Don't let young children see it...there is a very inappropriate sex scene!  And it wasn't really all that scary and the story line was just so bad and weak.  After all the excitement in town during filming, the end result was a real disappointment. :(

Maybe that blue container that goes out on trash day.
I'm not sure what you meant.
Anyway, I vaguely recall seeing the "dwarf" house on Twin Lakes in an old Laurel and Hardy movie with Sonja Henny as Snow White. I recall seeing it on a "halicrafters" black and white T.V. in the forties, and the movie was not new, then. Anyone able to verify this ???

I always wondered about that little dwarf house, I heard is was used once in a made for TV Snow White Movie, don't know if that's true or not.

That place is so adorable.

I've been fortunate to have been in that house in the 80's as it belonged to a friend of a friend.

One thing I remember about the interior of the house is how small it was. I look forward to seeing additional information about movies the house has been in.

When the grandson comes to visit he always asks to drive by the "Snow White" and "7 Dwarf" house.

I remember the rockford file shoot, it was a big day for WW. they also shot a Starchky and hutch episode once and maybee even a hardy boys way back if my memory serves me right. Also El Mirage is a well used area. I`ve noticed it in a few differant comercials. Be carefull if you come across a film crew out there you may see more than you want to  :-[.

You may be right, but it sure looked familiar.  Speaking of Wrightwood on film, I'd like to expand the subject just a little if I may.  Don't you find it interesting that in all the old monster movies (like War of the Worlds) everyone evacuated to the San Gabriel Mountains?  Are they saying we're not worth blowing up, or what?

Anyone know what is going on at the top of Oak and Sparrow?  Looks like a movie set was blocking the roads for the whole day.  I wonder how much longer and who is doing it.  OH, and watch for man-made ice there!

Actually, its directly at Thrush and Oak but either way, watch out for the ice as there are NO warning signs.   The large trucks were absent this morning, but does anyone know what its all about?  And why can they block the roadway all day and night long with their vehicles and props with no traffic redirection or concern for the other residents?  A little info please...
Title: Re: Filming in town
Post by: Wrightwood on Nov 25, 03, 08:02:31 PM
Interesting.... I went by this morning to make sure they weren't using a portion of our property without permission. Sure enough a large boom truck was parked completely on our property without permission.

The film crew had left and a cleanup person was attempting to use steam cleaning for snow & ice removal - without much success.

If the project was done correctly, permits for street closure were acquired through SB County Road Department.

(I haven't checked this afternoon but there was plenty of trash laying around this morning. Discarded coffee cups, clothing, etc.)

I drove by (on Linnet I think) and one of my grandkids said, "Look, it's snowing over there!" They've never visited when it's snowing and got all excited. Maybe at Christmas....

When I first saw it, I thought someone trucked it in so they could take a picture of their house with snow for a Christmas card.

Actually the production company approached the owners and had permission to film at their home. Everything was taped on private property. There wasn't any trash left after cleanup and no reason for anyone to be upset. Wrightwood is a beautiful place and should welcome people to share it with us. If they take care of the property they are using then what's the problem?

That's not entirely true. We happen to own property next door to the filming location and had a boom truck parked on our lot without permission and trash was left in numerous spots along the street.

The film shots may have been taken of one home on private property but the support equipment was not completely on one piece of private property.

If the filming company had the proper county permits to close the street, had permission from ALL private property owners which was used, had not left trash, had not left a traffic hazard with ice on the street - then I agree we should welcome people to Wrightwood.

The film crew came to town and made a lot of people happy
Well, not all were happy. My goodness, they made snow
and ice in our town.. They even rented all the rooms in the
motels, (bed tax income ), Spent money at the mini mart,
jensons, resturants, and some of these outsiders even did
some shopping in the local shops, (sales tax for the village)
But the worst part is they parked a truck on private property
WITHOUT permission.
I for one say thanks to the film crew for spending thousands
of dollars in my little village
Title: Re: Filming in town
Post by: Moose on Dec 09, 03, 02:03:02 PM
Just because a film crew "spent thousands of dollars in town", it does not give them the right to park illegally on private property or to leave trash around the site of the shoot.  It would be the same as saying that the snowplayers who spend money in town buying snow play toys and clothing then leave the broken toys and trash behind is OK.

NOT! >:(

Spending money in town does not give any one (or group) license to trespass or litter.

You know I have neighbors and complete strangers parking in front of my house all the time. Do I complain? No. Its the same as people parking in front of my mom's house in Rancho Cucamonga - we just don't have the sidewalks streets, etc that other towns do. And I really find it funny that the supposed trash found in the area was just assumed to be belonging to the film crew when I have trash on my street all the time from kids and who knows who else. I just think we here jump on everyone who may do something wrong when we probably have done it too. You can't tell me that everyone here has never littered or parked on someone's property for a little bit. We're not all perfect. I would understand if some damage had been done but there wasn't so I still don't get the big deal.
Title: Re: Filming in town
Post by: Wrightwood on Dec 09, 03, 03:51:58 PM
Parking on a public street is one thing - parking on private property is a liability issue, especially with a boom truck. If someone gets hurt who gets sued?

The trash was from the film crew. Some of their trash included coffee cups in neighbors yards in addition they left one of their cafeteria style coffee dispensers.

A commercial film crew using Wrightwood as a backdrop has a  responsibility to perform in a professional manner and that includes picking up their trash and not using private property for off street parking without permission.

I can honestly say I have never littered :) At least to my knowledge!!  My 3 year daughter knows that people who litter are" rude and naughty and need a time out"  If a three year old can figure that out why can't supposed professionals.

I want to know why he just didn't make a quick U-Turn and out race it??

Don't forget a bad remake of the Lone Ranger that had riding scenes shot up at Table Mountain Campground.

He played Chester Goode, Matt Dillon's sidekick.   I think Festus Haggen was Marshal Dillon's next sidekick.  Did you know that Burt Reynolds was also in some of the earlier espisodes?  And this was when Burt Reynolds looked good.

Does anybody know the name of the movie this film crew was working on?  Is it available on Netflix?  I was living at the top of Apple St. when this was being filmed and I've always wondered about it.

I just got finished watching "The Day the World Ended."  Simply HAD to see it (Netflix)!  Silly movie, but still pretty cool to see the street signs, the post office, Mile High Pizza, Apple St., among other familiar sites!

Title: What's filming in town today?
Post by: WWDREAMN on Aug 17, 10, 12:59:43 AM
Noticed filming going on near the library this afternoon, and some lighting set up in the library too. Outside, I saw a caravan of vans and suvs and an american medical response ambulance with camera men inside. Anyone know what it was for?

I heard it was a show on vh1 called legend hunters and they are hunting bigfoot.  They are going to be filming in the hardware store in the next few days also.   Kinda funny......

Funny, I tried to go to the library around 10:30 and there were people there taking molds of "footprints" out of the back of a truck, I never would have guessed that that was what they were filming.

I drove by Park Drive just a minute ago, and there were barricades up blocking it.  I saw a car or vehicle turned onto its side, with lots of debris around it.  Anyone know what happened?

All that cardboard on the ground looks familiar.    Hmmmmm.    Oh yeah, like after a long snow player weekend where they have been using cardboard boxes as sleds and left it right where they finished their last ride.   And the creative parking space also looks familiar.   Only thing missing is the bbq left behind.

Title: Commercials/films/commercial photography in the ANF...
Post by: Joe Schmoe on Oct 17, 11, 11:53:56 PM
Have you recognized the ANF in the media? (please include text descriptions of your links as web media tends to come and go)

What: 2012 Mercedes M-Class
Where: some shots before Vincent Gap, some beyond.
Detail: filmed not long after ACH was freshly repaved/sealed.  May have used some sort of giant fog machine to add fog in the trees.

I saw this commercial the last week on MNF and again tonight...I looked all over for it, thanks.
BTW, they can clean up the road and add fog easily with CGI.
Well done commercial.

Noticed a Large White Van with a dome on top of it yesterday parked in front of Navitat.  Turns out they were filming a Geiko commercial around town and after wrapping it up the crew wanted to take the Canopy Tour.   ;D

What was the name of that John Wayne film that had parts shot up here? The gas station has a still picture from the movie.

John Wayne was in WW?  That's pretty cool....

I remember walking past the Fire Station years ago and they were filming a movie with, then the not so popular, Matthew Mcconaughey.  We talked to his stand in for a bit and watched them shoot a few scenes.  Can't remember the name of the movie.....
