Police said I could get a gun to protect myself of course, as it takes them a while to get up here. So I did...and trust me...I will happily use it if he tries this stunt again in my home. I want my privacy and security back that badly.

Wrongone2messwith, if you are fearful and anxious about this situation I would strongly recommend that you get a dog and a shotgun for home defense. As a matter of fact, I would recommend it to everyone in town, regardless of their situation. A few years ago I decided that the nearly non-existent sheriff presence in town was not going to be sufficient for me to sleep well at nights. Especially out of concern for my wife, we got two German shepherds and a Remington 800 shotgun (which I taught my wife to shoot). If you don't want to go this route, I have heard good things about ADT security, if you have the means to pay for such a service.

Guns best way to go for me because of the police not taking me serious enough I feel. No finger prints taken..no footprints found however next morning I saw some...and I was never given police report number. Was one taken? Don't know he didn't say. So for me I'm being told handle it yourself it takes a while to get up here single woman who doesn't stand a freakin chance against any assaliant. Unacceptable. Sorry. As scared and fearful as I am now whoever comes over is getting injured by gun if I don't know the person(s). Period.

Cigar n scotch...i went with 45 caliber ruger p345....I like the way you think and yes shotgun would be great but I thought well what if he gets it out of my hands if he gets too close? So 45 is what I got. Dog will be next for heck of it. Lol and heck yes I'm fearful. But I'm watching him....and if he wants in he will get in. He won't leave unfortuately for him though. Not something I want to do..but I will.

I've got five dogs up for adoption - all in the 40-70 pound range, both male and female. They are friendly as can be, would bark at noises, and would make great companions.

Great idea, Chatty. wrongone2messwith, you already have a gun. Adopt a good-sized dog as a companion who will bark loudly should someone approach your home. You'll feel so much better, I know I do with my loud 70-pounder. (Who would bite a stranger, but that's another story. Most people won't try to come in hearing a big barking dog.)

I have two big dogs, two big guns and motion lights at the porch, driveway, and two in back....the porch one is stylish and the others utilitarian, but they take care of the security lighting problem without lighting up the neighborhood all night...with the gun discussion i would like to encourage training and practice for newer gun owners....I like my Remington 870 shotgun but I practice on a regular basis...the apple valley gun club has programs and programs specifically for women..we all need to be alert and report suspicious activity while looking out for ourselves and our neighbors...

Having my neighbor shot by a would-be home invasion robber followed by the other neighbor shooting at his girlfriend in the street the following year (22 feet in front of me), I get the impulse to protect oneself. (Didn't happen in WW--prompted the move though!) I have somewhere in storage my ggrandfather's pistol from when he was a sheriff in Yankton SD in the 1880's, most of my relatives have been in the military and so I have grown up with and around guns. Guns do not freak me out. . . I think edssds has some really good points to consider.

And for heaven's sake, if there is a child in the house with a gun, use a lock and wear the key around your neck. If you can train yourself to brush your teeth when you get up and go to bed, you can train yourself to lock and unlock your gun as you keep it in your nightstand, under your pillow, etc.

When was the last time there was a violent crime in Wrightwood (other than a bar fight)? I'm a big fan of the 2nd Amendment and think guns are important tools that all sovereign citizens should consider owning -- but this isn't exactly the Wild West...this is a string of petty thefts.

Exactly. My dog is a great family dog. NOT so great with strangers, but that's his temperament and not something we trained in him. It is a happy side effect that no bad guy would dare come in the house with Mr. Snarly on the other side of the door.

Question: if I were to get a gun/shotgun, what would you suggest? I'm a small woman, middle-aged but in good shape. No small children at home. I'd practice but want to get the right thing in the first place. This is strictly for the home, which means that the odds are 99.9999 etc. that I'll never have to use it. But I've been thinking about it for a long time.

That's a perfect example of one reason not to get a gun...not very effective at self-defense against yourself. When was the last time there was an armed robbery, home invasion, assault with a deadly weapon...?
I don't mean to be a contrarian, and by all means get a gun if it makes you feel better, but this is the safest place I've ever lived in my entire life. By far. It's weird to see everyone up in arms (pun intended). Maybe it's because we're remote, it's easy to get spooked...but that's pretty much why it's safe, right?

Have you met your neighbors? I'd get to know them so you feel more comfortable in your surroundings. You might consider joining CERT or one of the volunteer groups in town to make some friends and start getting a feel for the town. I think you will find that Wrightwood is a very nice place with wonderful people who watch out for each other.
Personally, I would NOT feel safe if I knew I had a nervous neighbor with a gun and an itchy trigger finger.
I just got an email advising that a good alarm is your car alarm. Keep your keys next to your bed, and you can hit the panic button which will set off your car alarm. That would spook anybody away for sure - though might upset your neighbors if you're setting it off all the time.
Truth is, in the daylight hours I'm brave....I find myself dreading the night hours though....I'm 5' 2" 110 pounds. So I cry when dark hits. I hate what he's done and he's a constant concern now, I don't sleep now. Coffee pot always going. Wish I could borrow that critter. Ughh!

I agree with Tim. Seems like any crime I remember in the recent years is BECAUSE people had guns. Remember the guy who shot his wife a few years back - the Klan house or something. Then the man who had a gun and was depressed, and the police killed him. And I know of at least one suicide with a gun.
I don't recall anyone defending their property or shooting an intruder. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You all are right, it's extremely unlikely that we will need guns against intruders up here. Both of the above examples were domestic violence made much worse by guns. However, if someone really is sneaking into wrongone's house then she needs to be able to defend herself inside her home.
The only time we actually had guns in the house was during the L.A. riots. We lived close to the action. My husband refused to leave our home and I refused to go without him. Our friend who lived nearby was a gun owner and collector, and unbeknownst to me loaned Alan a shotgun. Alan told me later and thought I'd be mad, but believe me I wasn't! That was a bizarre time. I never forgot seeing National Guardsman stationed around the neighborhood the next day, talk about guns... surreal.

ChrisLynnet: A Mossberg 500 combo 12 GA is a good shotgun for home defence. I comes with two barrels, one short for "around the house" and a longer "trap" barrel that you can use for trap shooting, which is a fun way to become familiar with the gun. Also take a class that covers safety, California gun laws and shooting instruction. As someone mentioned Apple Valley Gun Club is a good place. You do not need to be a member to take classes or shoot during open shooting days. You can shop for and get good deals on guns ammo and accessories at the OC Gun Show at the fairgrounds. Lots of vendors to compare prices. I haven't bought a gun in California in a while but I do not think there is a waiting period on a shotgun.

Just phooey. My message got lost again. I must be doing something wrong. My point was that a security system does not cost much more than a gun and protects your home when you're not there. I pretty much only arm ours when we're not home. I do have a 'panic button' next to my bed because I like to sleep with the windows wide open. Doubt I'll ever need it.
I've had different systems in different homes over the years. Happy to share experience with anyone considering a system. The salesmen will try to sell you components you do not need. I interviewed several companies before I decided on Hi Desert. They're local, their price was the best and the salesman was truly knowledgable and didn't try to sell me stuff I didn't need.
Let's face it. Sheriff response times are slower here. They cover a lot of territory. But, if someone does break into your place - that bell that wakes the dead goes off and hopefully scares away anyone trying to break in and alerts your neighbors.
The gun clubs I've gone to rented different guns for target practice. That way you can figure out which one works for you. I don't know about Apple Valley.
As for kids and guns. If you have a gun in the house it is critical to teach children not to touch them and to practice good gun safety. My brother, then 13, broke the lock off of Dad's gun case and managed to shoot a hole in his hand and the wall. Boy, was my Dad p'od. He made him report himself to the police and was grounded forever. cheryl o7o

Even with an alarm system, you will experience delayed response times from authorities. Yes, it's possible that the sound of the alarm might scare someone away though

Chryslynnet (and others considering a purchase)--If you don't want to wait for a gun show, Turner's Outdoorsman has quite a variety of guns. I wouldn't BUY from them necessarily, they're not cheap. They'll be happy to let you handle all types, so you can see if something feels too unwieldy, or feels just right in your hand.
There are pro's and cons to all types. I don't like semi-automatics--when you hear about someone cleaning a gun and it goes off, it was because the owner removed the clip, but forgot to empty the chamber. Some claim a round was "stuck" in the chamber. But, they hold the most bullets. (I think its ridiculous to worry about a home-invasion crew in WW, where a # of bullets would be handy.) When my dad got too old to effectively shoot a revolver, he got a Beretta Tomcat .32, a small caliber semi. All guns kick back with the explosion that sends the bullet flying--its pretty small in that Beretta. Which is something to consider in a shotgun. Its got a big kick. Sure, its scatter-shot so your aim doesn't have to be perfect, but if you're not holding it just right (in an emergency situation--why I can't imagine that happening ;) ), its going to knock you off balance, possibly knock you down. And if your aim was off, you're vulnerable. But on the other hand, the classic "chkchk" sound of a shotgun being cocked would probably make any intruder pee his pants and run the other way (a 28 gauge shotgun has less kick). . . A revolver holds 6 rounds. You can pull the trigger to shoot, or pull back the hammer for a much lighter touch on the trigger. Chris, I am far and away from being a gun expert (I only have one firearm), but if you are worried about a 12 gauge shotgun being too powerful for you to handle, you could look in to either low-recoil ammunition (it does make a big difference) or a 20 gauge shotgun. At close ranges a 20 gauge is still more than enough (way more than enough) to incapacitate someone at short ranges, and the recoil is lighter. We almost went with this, but my wife has been able to handle the 12 gauge, so we are happy with that. If you go to a firearm store (we used Bass Pro in Rancho) the sales people ought to be knowledgable and will hook you up with exactly what you need.
Wrongone2messwith, I am not worried about an intruder wrestling my shotgun from me. This brings up the question of tactics. I'm not going to be walking through my house with shotgun in hand searching for the intruder. So I won't present the opportunity for him to take my firearm. I will be in a room behind a closed door. If that door opens...then I will use the shotgun. Some might want to take more offense-oriented, pro-active tactics, but unless you have military or police training I'm not sure that it is wise for home defense. If you hear an intruder, call the police, and only use the gun if and when directly confronted. That's my philosophy, although I know others may disagree.
Incidentally, I would be a bit less confident in using a hand gun. The first thing to go in a high-stress situation is your fine motor skills - unless you are firing that handgun regularly at a range, and have committed that skill to second-nature muscle memory, you aren't going to fire all that accurately. One still must be proficient when using a shotgun, but accuracy is not nearly as critical, and I'd be a lot more confident that I could use it effectively even when panicked.

If you are timid in the use of guns, you may be the one getting shot.
Guns are not for everyone. Everyone has the right to one! Unless you are a felon.

No, they're not. The earliest one we ever had was in mid March and that was EARLY! They will start showing up in late April and May. And don't be surprised if you see em on our street ;).

Yes, I was home. I got up to open the door infact thinking it was a friend of mine then realized as I went to unlock it she was in the restroom. She ran out and said did u hear that? And I said he's back :( I started to cry and sat down and called 911. I feel like he isn't finished. Very scared.

Did that happen today, or another day? Was there someone there when you opened the door? Did your friend see that person? That could help. I understand you feel frightened and vulnerable. That is understandable. But, you know,, you are going to be totally ok. When you feel frightened.. sometimes you react to the least little thing thinking that 'the person' is back again. Tuesday my friend heard him in house she was one room away with door open he ran out. My house is tiny, maybe 500 sq ft. He closed the very solid heavy door behind him. She froze and didn't look out windo but footprints in the snow. Friday yes I was home. I didn't open the door, I was close but didn't of course. Officer told me he got in from back fence. This happened. I've never been afraid for two solid years infact tell my friends its so safe there and its for that reason I live there. It still may be, however not my house. He wants in.

So again...can I ask that we get together...if someones at my door I call a list of numbers and this guy get caught rather than me having to wait til he gets in? I'm looking otherwise. I can't do this by myself :( I would do it for you guys. Lol

You're right. It isn't the wild west. And I'm trying to keep it that way. I can sit back and allow it I guess being that I'm 5 ft tall and weigh 115 lbs. I mean I don't stand a chance. But doing that I sure make it easy for the riff raff to rob me, possibly hurt me, and take MY right to peace away. I won't let him or anyone run my darn home. Gun it is....everytime. Sorry.

wrongone, no one is telling you not to get a gun, just that you know how to use it. Didn't you say you already bought a handgun? I think putting in a security system is a good idea too. And do you like dogs? If you like them and will treat one as your companion, then a dog can be an incredible addition to any security system. Also, do you have a friend that can stay with you for a few days until this gets ironed out?

I have shot guns for years. The gun I have is a 45 caliber. I can handle it and shoot my target at the range with great skill. I never kept a gun in the house before this predator decided to come over TWICE is BECAUSE I have a child who always had friends in and out of the house and it wasn't the right decision to own one for us then and BECAUSE I'm responsible and BECAUSE I have always felt I could protect my child and have. We have been lucky. She left for college. I'm alone now. This is a first someone coming in my home and trying a second time 3 days later. I am not trigger happy, I know the gun. And I will use it if and only if he enters my home. Its stays locked up and unloaded until bedtime at which time yes a bullets in the chamber. I am tiny and shoot a 45. If I didn't know what I was doing that wouldn't be the gun to have now would it. Cmon...if this happened to you what would u do? I love dogs but I work. Unfair to a dog I think. Its not the polices fault they can't help me more. Its the counties and congress's and those of us who voted them in. I could go on and on. Just wanted to notify everyone because it would be so wrong not to tell u this was happening and could to you. Thank u those that have tried to help, its so very much apreciated. Really. Thank you. Everyone here seems like a neat bunch of people. I am very much for what rights I do have, and will keep a gun to protect myself. If the unfortunate circumstance happens and he gets in,those who think its not the way to go, having a gun, well you won't have to thank me for taking one sicko out of wrightwood and from getting into your home scaring the crap out of you. I sound angry....I'm not, frustrated maybe. Because this shouldn't be a discussion or opinion on guns....it should be taken seriously and some can choose not to....that's your choice. Its awful you have to live with this kind of fear. It was good of you to put your self out here and let people know what's going on. True, the gun and protection discussion took on a life of its own, but that may be very beneficial to a lot of people. Also, with any luck, the creep harassing you will read all of this, or his friends will, and it will end!

My father was career LAPD. He Retired as a leutenant with 8 shootings and 7 kills. All the shootings were justified and he received accomendations and multiple awards from Chief Parker. Things were different in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Joseph Walbalm was his partner for awhile and he encorpoated my father as a character into his book "The Blue Knight", using his real name. My father tried to sue him but Joseph had changed his middle initial. ;D
Whenever I hear someone say, they could have shot them in the leg instead of killing them, they have no idea. When an office fires his weapon it is to KILL and they unload it. If a policeman fires his weapon it is to KILL. Thankfully tasers have given another avenue of subduing dangerous suspects.
At 5 years old on the way to LAPD night at Disneyland or going to the PIKE or POP, my father would pass his 38 revolver to me in the back seat and ask me to unload it and load it again and hand it to him in a safe manner. My mother would have had a fit! I nearly blew my head off as an infant when my father was cleaning his service revolver.
The one piece of advice my father gave me was: "Only unloaded guns kill people". You must always treat every gun as if it is loaded.
Most people are killed by a family member who mistakenly thought they were an intruder. Keep that in mind folks and be safe!

I've been holding my tounge on this topic but it's serious discussion going on and thought I'd add my opinion / advice.

Might have been in the day, but that was not what I was trained at the LACSD training facililty when I was working out there. I got so chewed out during a live fire on the move training drill for emptying my weapon and all my magazines. The instructor got nose to nose with me and shouted, with real spit flying "there's three more bad guys in bushes, now what are ya gonna do". That has stuck with me for years, maybe it was his breath that left the impression. ;) Or maybe your intruder has a buddy you don't see?
If our readers don't know this man, they should, and buy his home defense book, join a range and practice... a lot. Get additional training and read about the legal ramifications of using deadly force, even if it was justified. During one of my classroom training sessions, the instructor drilled it into our heads to always look for a way out instead of firing your weapon. The decision to fight or flight is a very important decision and can and will come up during the court proceedings that could change your life forever. This talk is serious stuff and the family of the perpetrator can sue the shooter for wrongfull death even if leathal force was justified by the DA. The jury will decide your fate, the attourneys will empty your pockets defending you.
Leo's have the legal force of the Dept. and the City or County backing them up. Law abiding citizens are on their own. Don't look to the NRA for calling in the cavelry either.

When our kids were young we camped at Lake Havasu in our motor home. In the middle of the night, the man from the rv next door knocked on our door. He was bringing back our younger son, maybe 6 at that time. He had gotten up, left the motorhome and gone into the one next door. This was the first time we were ever aware of him sleep walking and we never heard a sound. It didn't wake his brother sleeping next to him either.
That man was a little shaken up as he had thought it was an intruder and had his gun ready to shoot. Thank God he realized in time that it was a child. I can't imagine how any of us would have gone on if he hadn't.
Everyone has a right to protect themselves, but there is a lot of responsibility that goes along with that. An alarm system can be an excellent way of alerting you to someone entering your house the second they break a contact. It's a good opportunity to let the person get away very quickly. I think it's clear from all the crime reports that we have a problem right now in Wrightwood. It would be a good time to make our community very uninhospitable to anyone with bad intentions. I think it is important to think first in terms of deterrence methods to reduce the chance you would ever need to use a gun.

There's a sad story running on Reuter's today out of Orlando. A 17 year old walked to the local store to buy some candy. The Neighborhood Watch Captain thought he was suspicious and shot him. The child died. He was black in a mostly white neighborhood and was visiting his father. Really sad.

ts to open door...hearing me saying I'm calling cops to then leave. Knock at front door with porch light on wouldve been the way to go for a normal person not there to harm me or steal from me. But you're right...he was probably just trying to make a friend. Lmao! You fail miserably in your point. Are you a defense attorney? Try again. Do me a favor, if u see my car light on, let my battery die. Good luck and ill warn u again to stay safe and lock your doors. Defend yourself how you wish. I chose my way.

Interesting that he closed the door. I surprised burglars on two different occasions (in L.A.). The first time they ran out my rear sliding glass door. I walked over to close it and found my TV lying on my patio. I was fairly certain I hadn't left it there. On the second occasion, I came home and found a side door open and all my grandfather's military medals lying on my bed and my camera equipment dumped on the floor. In both instances the person/s ran and did not take the time to close the door.
Wrong2: If you don't want to go to the expense of a security system, you could hang some bells on your door that ring when the door is opened. And, some wind chimes in your windows. You can't really get past those without making noise. You can also cut those goofy musical messages that come in cards out and afix it to your door. My son did that in his bedroom, used to drive me nuts. And, hey, people here are trying to help and offer some 'food for thought' .. no reason to get personal.
Now, I'm not sure if this should be here or moved to the new 'self protection' thread.

We could start a new thread somewhere called "Exploits with thieves." I have any number of stories. Here is one and I'll try to make it short. I was missing money out of my purse. I was fairly certain who the thief was (he worked here) and I laid a trap. He fell into it. So, I told him to wait for me on the porch and I had a project for him.
I came out, dumped my entire purse at his feet and said "I want you help me find my missing $20's" He lied, then he cried, and then he fessed up. I never got my money back, but I did find a bunch of missing lipstick.. so all to the good. That's when I got a security system up here. cheryl o7o

You guys are great! A week ago I couldve been messed with let's be honest...I've gotten my brave up and refuse to fear this guy anymore. Hilarious how you dumped purse out..clever! And its sad we have to try to outsmart these guys. I took two days off work to put up barriers along the fence so I can at least see if attemt was made while I'm away from the house or next morning, and the bells were put up instantly. Thanks everyone for the offer to help. There sure are some good people here. I have to comment the women especially who have offered to actually come over if I hear him again outside my home. Incredible of you and very brave! I'm extremely honored. Want to hug each and every one of those who offered that. I can't thank you enough.

I don't know if having an icon that shows when folks are posting via cell phone is a good idea, especially in a small town where it's so easy to know where everyone lives. Assuming that's what that icon means, is there any way to turn it off?

I've been known to post from a phone even from home. Lot's of times, I have to line up for the computer and I don't have to line up for my phone. But I see your point. It's like not mentioning in facebook that you are about to go on vacation.

As I was filling up at the gas station today, sinking into depression, I had a brain storm. Somewhere back in this thread I suggested cutting out those silly musical whatevers that come in gift cards and go off when you open them up. My son did that to his bedroom door. You can attach one to your door .. but here's the brainstorm part: attach it on the inside of the door/flap on your car where your gas cap is. Course, people at the gas station may think you're nuts. But, I just have this vision in my mind of one of those slimeballs trying to rip off some gas and being surprised by "Happy Birthday" or somesuch at 3am.

Just that it advertises that you're not home (or home). As Stitches says, sometimes people post from they're phones when they are home, but if you're worried about someone stalking you it's still potential information I'd rather not share. And I don't see what purpose that info would serve for regular readers of a message board...why have the icon there at all?

Yes. IF you enter my home. Never outside. Never. He's gotta come in first. I know the law and reason for it. Outside in front yard or at front door is acceptable. Come inside from my back door uninvited...a whole different story.

He got in by opening back door which being it was 1100 am it was unlocked. The two other attempts were at night when door was locked and he couldn't get in. A few nights later the neighbor who the guy passes to get to my house heard someone and when she opened the door his screwdriver was left behind at her front door. So I imagine he's finding other ways to open doors if they are locked. As far as an earlier comment posted from another...) Yes, I can be sued because we live in a sue happy society...- know this. And if its my daughters life or mine vs. Lawsuit....1hich do you think I'm gonna choose? (Sorry to add that to this post as separate conversation.) But a loser will find a way to mess with the unprotected and weak before someone prepared to go unharmed. So again, having to make my point with some...choose your own way to protect yourself, mine is within the law.

I hear you. And I am all for you to be able to protect yourself, family & home. I was just pointing out the Florida story due to the gun law that they have. I believe 16 other states also have the same "stand your ground law." It gives the aggressive gun owners a scapegoat. I sure hope the grand jury in this case makes the right decision based on ALL of the evidence. And if Zimmerman is lying, I hope he gets his for taking the life of an innocent kid.
Also, it's real easy for people to sit back and say "I'll shoot the SOB if they come in my house!" But when it happens, it's a whole surreal ordeal. I worked with a guy who legitimately shot an intruder while he was breaking into his house through a window. The intruder survived and claimed my co-worker came out of his house and confronted him on the street and shot him. Fortunately for my friend, the evidence proved the truth that he was in fact shot while climbing through the window of the house. I guess if you're going to shoot an intruder, you better aim so it's not just a flesh wound! ;)

I keep thinking of the recently widowed young woman with a baby who blew away the guy that broke into her trailer. The young mom was on the phone with 911 dispatchers while the guy was trying to get through the barricaded door, they have the 911 tapes. She checked to see if she could legally shoot the guy (this is Oklahoma). The dispatcher told her that she couldn't advise her to shoot someone but "Do what you have to do to protect your baby." Well, she did.

My house has gotten a make over...looks like a compound with all the lights I have put up on sensors. Takes the potential charm out of the house but gettin no complaints from my awesome neighbors. :D
