The Space Shuttle Endeavour is being piggy backed on a 747 and is due to land at Edwards Air Force Base this Thursday, September 20th!!
So exciting, and I'd love to see it. Anyone in Forum Land know how to get close to see the low, slow fly by and see it land?

Seeing a shuttle on the back of a big plane is a sight to see. I caught the Enterprise at an airshow many years ago.
But now, seeing a shuttle just makes me sad because it reminds me that my country has decided to throw away all the work it took to get us to space.
I admit it, I'm a child of the space race of the late 60's. I grew up believing that the human race has to go to space, and that my country was the one to get it done. Somehow, knowing that we have to buy rides from Russia to even get to the space station bothers me a lot.

On Friday morning, it's scheduled to depart, and make some low passes over Lancaster/Palmdale (1500 feet above ground level) before departing the area.
Since it's scheduled to make some low passes over the Lancaster/Palmdale area, I might suggest going to Avenue N at Sierra Highway, which is a popular place for people to watch "cool stuff".
Of course, all this is subject to change, depending on weather, and whatever else could pop up.

I have been watching when Endeavour would land at Edward's for weeks now, and it keeps changing as Bob C stated. I wish there was a way to to find out the TIME once we know for sure she is arriving at Edward's. Anyone with connections that could find that out? I do not want to miss this! I saw her land at Edward's her last time on Nov. 30, 2008. (I also saw Challenger, and Columbia land back in the days they landed at Edward's all the time).
Even with my 400 mm lens, she is hard to see. I look so forward to a LOW level fly over! (Especially since my sister has my 400mm lens right now) :P

For whatever its worth, this should be the 747 that carries it: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/NASA905 (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/NASA905)
Unknown whether or not they will block realtime tracking of the flight when it does get mated with the Shuttle (it wouldn't surprise me if they do block it).
I would suggest watching Dryden's website for last minute updates: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/home/index.html (http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/home/index.html)

Thanks Bob C. I am so worried I will miss it, ever since I heard she was coming to LA I have been anticipating this for awhile!

I remember seeing the ___? ___ Shuttle being piggy backed do a fly over Palmdale about 20 years ago. It was Spectacular!

Thanks Skier Bob!!

I have the opportunity to get onto Edwards and I know just where I'd go...North Base Road. But...then do I go back on Friday to Ave. N and 10th West for the flyover in Palmdale Lancaster? Oh...such fun ahead. I have a nice camera with a good lens, not that zoomable, but It will work and do the job. :2thumbsup:

UPDATE from Dryden's page:
The SCA and Endeavour are expected to arrive in the Edwards area shortly after noon PDT Thursday, and after a brief flyover around the base, land about 12:30 p.m.
Where would the best place to wait for her to arrive at Dryden??

It was a GREAT experience!! We were off the 58 @ 20 Mule Team rd. and it flew right by us!! It was HOT, but worth it! I am so glad I went to see it. Tomorrow is another chance, try to go see it if you can. After it lands at LAX, a shuttle will never be in the air again :-(
Pictures will be posted soon!

She has landed for the last time, brings a tear to the eye.....I wish it was not the end of the shuttle program...
-
I couldn't help but tear up today, too, when the Endeavor flew by our school at lunchtime today. I told the students who were lucky enough to witness it that this was history. It made me feel quite patriotic if I do say so myself! ;D
-
I would have felt more patriotic about it if it had been the start of the program, not the end.
-
Practically every one at work was either on roof tops or in the streets some where in El Segundo. We all hate to see the program go away. Practically every employee had something to do with the Shuttle program at some time in their career.

I still don't think it was worth destroying 400 old trees just to move it down the street. >:(
Its not going to fly again...they could have taken off the wings and put it back together at the museum. >:( >:( >:(

I grew up in this area. Many of the sidewalk trees are ficus and are lifting up the sidewalk so that you can't walk on it, especially on the Manchester leg of the run. I can't answer for other legs. You all know how I love the garden, but these should have been taken out 50 years ago and something more appropriate put in. On Sepulveda, north of LAX the side walk is lifted, in general minimum foot and some areas nearly two feet high. Yes, that's what I said, no typo. They've been this way for 20-30 years. There was an article in the local paper about this recently and as usual it's a wad of doo-doo, but basically the plan for L.A. City's street trees is trimming every 50 years unless there's an emergency. Yes, that's what I said, no typo.
As for taking the wings, off, the Shuttle is not an airplane. They looked at this option first. The wings are an integral part of the Shuttle, body & interior, and to remove them and put them back on was not possible. I saw an interview Friday with the guy in charge of the project. He seemed very thoughtful about all of the problems. The vehicle that is transporting it sounds a lot like the second vehicle they got to bring up the sections for the bridge on Hw2 - separate sections, leveling, etc. So, the vehicle will actually be zig-zagging the street medians as it goes along to minimize the amount of trees and infrastructure like poles that needs to be taken down. He *reported* that where trees needed to be taken down, that the individuals were contacted. In some cases with opposing neighbors and one liked their tree and the other didn't, the latter was taken down instead.
I'm sure some folks still have angst about their trees, but I don't think this is a project where you can please everyone. I'm happy that the museum is planting double the trees back, hopefully they will be of some size, haven't heard about that aspect.
As for the shuttle being in L.A., I think that's more important. Hundreds of thousands of people in So. Cal. worked on various aspects of the space program, it will be great for them to visit and bring their kids and grandkids to actually see what they did. I hope it will inspire more L. A. area children to have goals, and to pursue math, science and engineering.

Toolman & I saw her this morning in Westchester. Very cool, nice crowd and met one of my AM news field reports - she was even nicer in person (Gigi Graciette).
If you're up, tune in on TV or news/internet for live feed around 10pm tonight. It is parked now at Randy's Donuts, reconfiguring to go over the 405 Fwy with the Tundra (15 min. trip) and then reconfigure back for the rest of the trip. (You may have heard this is all a Toyota stunt, but they're just paying to help out. Caltrans put the thumbs down on the full configuration weight going across the fwy).

Yep, we made our way into Westchester this morning and well worth it. The main street traffic was nuts. Since the Lagomorph grew up in that hood, she knew how to get in the back way. We had a short walk to the holding area and it was well worth the effort. We could have stayed there all morning. The people were great to talk to, would move out of the way for pictures, all the reporters were friendly. It was a very enjoyable experience, especially for me since I worked on many shuttle projects.
The business end

Wow :o after seeing the crowd at the Forum on the news, I'm sure glad we went to Westchester yesterday. The Forum parking lot looks worse than the Led Zep concert in 73.... yea I'm that old... but still cool 8)
