I got the license.  If I can do it.....anyone can.  Plenty of good study guides available that make it pretty painless.

Wrightwood, Jim, myself and others were all in the same class, and received our licences at the same time.  Amateur radio is a really great hobby, you can put as much or as little time/money/experience into it that you like.  Obviously, the more time you spend at it, the better you understand it.

As we all know, we cannot rely on outside media to give us up-to-date information when emergencies arise.  The best source of that information is this website, listening to local amateur frequencies, and interacting with other amateur operators.

There's no reason that money for equipment should stop anyone from becoming a Ham radio operator.
Hand held radios (known as an HT) can be purchased for $30 from Amazon.

Total cost of becoming a licensed amateur radio operator

$10 Class
$20 Study guide
$15 Test session  (10 year license)
$30 Hand held radio
-------------------------
$75 total (maybe a few dollars more for sales tax)

With Winter approaching this is a great time to become a Ham Radio operator and hear first hand about road conditions and weather.

Bummer, we missed the class. Wish there was a way to have been notified. We have been waiting for a local class. Maybe next one .

I wish I had known you were interested!  I'll let you know when the next class will be held.  How many in your family are interested in the class?

For those on the fence about getting a ham license....I got mine and I am the most scientific challenged person I know.  Great instructors...the study tools (book and on line) make learning the important information easy and the test a piece of cake.
