Post by: ezzpete on Mar 19, 15, 05:15:55 PM
...not the best, but can you even get a FRS radio for so cheap?

Excellent!  Thanks for the info.
These could be good radios to keep in backpacks or vehicles for emergency purposes.
Have you tried one yet?

I bought a UV-82 a couple of months ago and could not be more pleased with it. Programming has a bit of a learning curve to it, but really no big deal. If you get the cable and download Chirp, it's way easy. I'm actually running Chirp on both a Mac and a PC. Anyway I use it mostly when we're out running trails in the desert. Sometimes we can have up to 6 to 8 4x4's and not all are equipped with hams. I used to have to carry 2 radios, one for the hams and one for the gmrs/FRS guys. Not anymore!  ;D

no i haven't, but it seems to have good reviews. hard to believe something so useful can be so cheap.

i guess the FCC could catch you, but it's doubtful. for years someone who isn't me ran modified  HF ham rigs on the CB outbands (below1 and above 40), from both mobiles and bases, while using high power. at that time i think Uncle Charley actually had $$ to throw at scofflaws. never had a problem, and either did anyone i knew doing the same thing. i've heard of people getting fined, but most were either causing interference all over the place or running 1000s of watts.

on the other hand hamsters are more likely to turn each other in. but then again many outbanders have HAM tickets but find it more fun on the illegal freqs.

Recently purchased the radio. Seems to work fine.
Programming isn't too bad either.
Using Google, I found this helpful site: http://www.hamuniverse.com/w7dtguv5rprogramming.html.
Seems to cover it well.
I think I'll buy another one to keep in my truck in case of emergency.
