The son of San Bernardino County Fire Chief Mark Hartwig, Dawson Hartwig, has gone missing in the Lake Arrowhead area after going on a hike by himself.
Hartwig, who spoke with The Press-Enterprise by phone Saturday, said his son and a couple friends had traveled to the area to enjoy the recent snow on Friday.
At some point Friday, Dawson had gone for a walk by himself on Burnt Mill Road, his father said.
"He never came back from his walk," he said.
He said Dawson is 20 years old and between 6 feet, 4 inches and 6 feet, 5 inches tall.
Hartwig said he didn't know of any search efforts yet, but that he was working closely with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department to learn what he could about the missing boy.
He asked that anyone who might see his son in the area call 911.

A search party in the Lake Arrowhead area has begun looking for Dawson Hartwig, son of San Bernardino County Fire Chief Mark Hartwig, on Saturday, Jan. 28, after Dawson went on a hike by himself and did not return.
"We got a map set now we're transposing it to hand it out to folks," said Battalion Chief Larry Lavogue.
Mark Hartwig, who spoke with The Press-Enterprise by phone Saturday, said his son and a couple friends had traveled to the area to enjoy the recent snow on Friday.
At some point Friday, Dawson had gone for a walk by himself on Burnt Mill Road, his father said.
"He never came back from his walk," he said.

Hartwig said that he was working closely with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department to learn what he could about the missing boy.
He asked that anyone who might see his son in the area call 911.
Pierce Marquez and his father Mario came to the Lake Arrowhead area from Ontario to "help however we can," Mario said.
Pierce's girlfriend, Samantha, is Dawson's sister.
The search is beginning in the Lake Arrowhead Village shopping center, starting at Burnt Mill, Battalion Chief Lavogue said. A Cal Fire helicopter is assisting, circling the skies above downtown Lake Arrowhead.
More than 100 fire and law enforcement personnel are involved in the search.

This is very sad news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hartwig family and the young man's friends.
Another very tragic lesson in the dangers of lake ice. We are lucky we have not had any tragedies like this at Jackson Lake as I have again seen many people on the surface ice over the last several weeks.

So very sorry to read of this tragic end. Prayers and thoughts for his family and friends now. cheryl o7o

I find it interesting that a 20 years old young man did not take his cell phone with him when the left the rental--aren't they "ubiquitous" in the hands of young adults???

Are you thinking possible suicide?

I think any speculation of this sort is inappropriate.

I think any speculation of this sort is inappropriate.
And why would that be? Any investigator worth their salt would have to look down that ally.
-
True...but we're not investigators, just voyeurs watching another family's tragedy.
-
This is a terrible tragedy for a family.
The appropriate entities will investigate all of the circumstances.
Unsubstantiated speculation could be hurtful to the family.
Let's just hold the family and friends in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
