Even scarier, people think that, if they don't evacuate when told to do so, they will actually have time to get out as the fire approaches.

Agreed.   Ask all the folks in Santa Rosa and Napa about that one.

If someone tells me to evacuate, I'm outta there.

Firefighters who are busy saving people's lives are not fighting the fire.

Evacuating earlier improves the chance that I'll have a home to come back to.
