Unless I missed it I don't see any mention of navigation systems taking unprepared people to these areas.

I'd bet that on a per capita basis interest in the wilderness is probably at or near an all-time low.  There are a multitude of recreation areas in our nearby forests that are abandoned or only barely used.  I think people are just getting dumber.

I agree Joe.  Also, I think they feel that because they have their phones, they are invincible...and rescuable thus they press on when they shouldn't.
