I just happen to have a T-Mobile phone for a few more days.

I checked, and there is no signal here.

I suspect (I don't know) that the towers above Big Benny's are not owned by T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. but by someone like American Tower or Crown-Castle.

The covers were off of one of the cellular spruces yesterday, I'll be the covers are off of the one that serves T-Mobile.

They turn the cells off to protect the workers.

Thanks lwt42

What doesn't make sense is spending the money to camouflage the tower, but not choosing a native species.

We just switched MVNOs (still on Verizon's towers) and our new MVNO supports WiFi Calling.

It works by connecting you to the cellular network through your internet connection when the towers are down (or inundated by snowplayers).

This works beautifully.

To make this truly a reliable connection, get a computer UPS and plug your modem/ONT/router/AP into it.  A 900va UPS will keep your internet (and cell service through WiFi) working for hours.

Note that a lot of "desktop" UPSes are not designed to run 100% for more than 10 minutes, they can overheat and fail.  Higher VA ratings run cooler.

Today received email and text message from TMobile:
Planned tower maintenance is now complete
Service on the tower you use most has been completed. Thank you for your patience as we worked to bring you a great network experience.

Really nice of TMobile to let us know that a "Planned Tower Maintenance" is complete.
Where was the advance notice that it was going to take place?

Vandal slashes fiberoptic cables, crippling internet access for some in Hesperia, SBSD says

Hesperia residents were without internet access for hours on Sunday after an apparent vandal slashed fiberoptic and copper cables on a utility pole, authorities said.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., deputies responded to C Avenue and Hercules Street, where they found “a span of fiber optic cables [had been] cut from poles,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The primary service provider, Charter/Spectrum, told deputies about the damage, which was caused by an unknown person and was estimated to cost about $40,000, officials said.

The outage lasted “several hours until the restoration was completed,” and it “appears the vandalism may have also affected customers of other network providers,” officials added.

No suspected vandal has been identified, and the motive remains unknown.

Anyone with information is asked to call 760-947-1500 or 760-956-5001.

During a period about 3:30am Sunday morning until services were restored about noon, I had no TV service, no internet, no land line and no cell service.
The TV was the first to return to service, then the land line and probably internet and cell service later.

The sad part of this is that they were probably trying to steal copper, which is valuable, while a chunk of fiber has no scrap value at all.
