I cant watch the cam it is just a black popup with a red X and on the bottom status bar and counts down from 359sec to 0 sec and closes ???
Hey WW
Will you be able to record the actual act of the chicks cracking the shells. I would be great for the people that are not avialable at that time.
What is the egg count up 2?
This is so cool to watch! I sure didn't know it took them all week to lay all their eggs. How long before they hatch?

Try downloading that latest Free Java program.

Are you using IE SP2 ?
This is so cool to see! We have Stellar chicks in a nest under our deck. Not sure when they hatched, but heard the babies peeping last weekend. We have another crop of Titmouses (mice?) in a birdhouse out front. Mama is sitting on the nest--no babies yet.
If my calculations are right we should see eggs hatching between May 27 and June 1. (that's using 14 days from the 1st egg and 16 days from the 4th egg)
I can't wait until they hatch! :)
Do Mom and Dad take turns in the Jay world, or is Mom left to care for the eggs herself? -

You can pretty much go by the amount of sexual dimorphism as to how the duties are shared--or not. Sexual dimorphism is the sexes looking the same or different. (di-two, morph-form) The more sexual dimorphism, the less the male is likely to spend time caring for the birds, the more the two sexes look alike, the more they seem to share the duties. With Stellar jays being so similiar, it is a fair bet, they share most of the duties. As with most rules--I'm sure someone could come up with exceptions. There are always phalaropes where the females are polyandrous (they mate with lots of different males) are the more colorful, and the drab colored males do all the incubation and care of the young!
It's fascinating to see the parents eat the shell as the baby bird breaks free.
Speaking of nests, that has to be one of the cleanest nests I have ever seen. Every other nest I have seen is just covered in bird droppings.
We've got a feral cat in the neighborhood that's been eying the nest.
Looks like there's a parent back "cleaning" the nest. How disgusting that they eat the droppings. :P
BBob: We are all waiting for Nolena to read this and get back at you.....
Er, I meant to say "Get back TO you, Bob". ;)
No worries, Bob.
Uh Oh, looks like someone might be ready for some new shingle molding. ;)
Here's a question I don't think has been addressed yet. Any time of the day or night, we are able to view the nest via the cam. Is the light built into the camera, or is there actually a light on the nest at night? Seems like that would interfere with the birds' circadian rhythms, assuming they have them, like we do. Just curious.
OK, here's another question (I'm just full of curiosity today, aren't I?) A few days ago you mentioned that you had saved the nest from 2001, when 5 babies hatched, and this time there are 4, and you were going to compare the sizes of the nests to see if maybe the parents can predict how large they need to build their nest.
If you just left the current nest in its place, would the parents come back to the same nest next year, or do they prefer to build a new one each year anyway?
There are still 4 babies in the nest.
My guess is that they will begin leaving the nest tomorrow.
I just made a change to the livecam view and you will now be looking at the 2nd camera angle. This 2nd camera view will be better to watch the birds leaving the nest.
cant get the new cam to work it just shows the Blue EARTH CAM is Loading Live images NOW! for 359 sec then closes :'(
I got it to work on my other computer
Some of us here at work are wondering - has momma gone for good? ???
What will we all do without the babies to watch???? :'(
Well, hopefully soon we will have a woodpecker family to watch, so that will still give us an excuse to not do housework, yardwork, etc. ;)
I hope the first 2 baby jays are ok - any updates?
Please tell me I'm not alone in this!! Please tell me that there's someone else out there in forum land that is as glued to this as I am!! ;D
Well, I'm still sittin' here in my nightie, no shower yet, glasses on instead of contacts in, no breakfast yet, geez, now it's past lunchtime!! Let's just blame John for this! ;D
I didn't used to be able to stay in the house on beautiful days like this. Oh well, the unplanted flowers can wait till tomorrow I guess........ :-\
It looks like nobody is left and they ain't comming back. Is it time for the Stellar's Jay Ground Cam?
Okay Wrightwood, you need to disconnect the nest cam, it is just too sad looking at that empty nest. :'( :'( I can't believe not a card or a letter or a phone call from any of the four baby jays. :'( :'(
Doesn't the crossed fingers hinder you when you type? ;D
This girl's crossing her fingers that we get to see a video soon. :2thumbsup: ;D :2thumbsup:

Nope, I can type with my pinkies ;D
Yay! Thanks WW!! Can't wait!!
That might not be the same bird. Could just be another baby. I have seen four hanging out in the bushes to the side of my house. And one adult that yells at me when I get too close. He took one of the peanuts, I had for the squirrels, and was having a tough time getting it open. They can fly up to the roof and back, but I don't think much further.
Tomorrow night on the 11pm Channel 4 news they are going to have a segment on nature cams. I guess there are a lot of people who are mounting cameras inside their bird houses and capturing some very interesting nature footage much like our own Wrightwood. Their tease for the segment tomorrow showed some nice bird videos.
