I just called the number and they are only taking down trees that are infested with the bark beetle. Trees dying from drought or other causes are not eligible, according to the woman I spoke with. :'(
-
I've been told that the hazard abatement team will go out and assess the trees for free.
It's not up to a homeowner or person answering a phone to determine if it's bark beetle related. If you have a dead or dying tree in SB County call and have them look at it.
-
So if my tree is dead, but bark beetles did not kill it they will not remove it?
-
I'm not sure that there is a cut and dry answer your question.
The program was built around the bark beetles as they caused a majority of the mortality. Drought is a contributing factor that also caused tree mortality and weakness to trees making them more susceptible to beetles.
The San Bernardino County Fire Marshal wants all dead and dying trees removed and in many instances the trees fall within the responsibility of the PUC's requirement for Edison removal.
The Fire Safe Council recommends to call on all dead and dying trees.
So if my tree is dead, but bark beetles did not kill it they will not remove it?
-
Also, they told me that it was only pine trees. I have some dead fruit trees that they won't touch.
-
I called and they sent a person out to look at my trees. The person was very helpful and explained it is mainly for Pines and they will help with oaks, cedars if it dead, be it drought, beetle or what ever the cause was.
-
Also, they told me that it was only pine trees. I have some dead fruit trees that they won't touch.
Gee. I guess only dead pine trees are fire hazards. ;)
-
How big are your fruit trees?
-
The fruit trees are maybe 15-20 feet high. The wouldn't be hard to take down, I was just hoping to get it done for free!!! Hmmm, does apple or cherry wood make good firewood?
-
yes. any hard wood is good for that. But apple and cherry wood are great for smoking meats and fish.
-
-
SCE is also doing tree removal if it is close to the power lines for free
They just took out 6 pine trees on the side of my house today :'(
I know they needed to go but it's still sad to see a tree falll.
( When we lived in Sacramento had to remove an 80ft cotton wood
because of roots everywhere :-[)
-
Here's the tree removal topic.
-
My dead tree is not indigenous. I do not know much about trees but it's not a mountain tree. Not a fruit tree. I am not sure why it died. It was fine last year, got plenty of water this spring. It started to bloom and then stopped.... :(
-
This was cleared up at last nights FSC meeting. The county will take down any species of tree, including fruit trees, that are dead or dying whether from insect damage or not. If the tree is a threat to life it will be taken down almost immediately, if it is a fire hazard it will be taken down within a few days. So if you were waiting to take down a hazardous tree because you thought it would cost you too much money, your prayers have been answered as it will not cost you anything. So help keep us all safe and have your dead or dying hazardous trees removed ASAP.

Tree-removal funds see dip
By Kelly Rush, The Sun Staff Writer
A federal spending bill approved by Congress this week includes $5 million to remove dead and diseased trees in the San Bernardino National Forest next year.
The funding is $25 million less than the allocation the U.S. Forest Service received this year to reduce hazardous fuels from the nation's most urbanized forest, officials said.
The $26.3 billion plan, poised to be sent to President Bush for approval, is for the Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency.
San Bernardino National Forest officials said they hoped to receive more to complete projects in areas of high fire danger in the mountains.
Jim Specht, spokesman for Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, said the congressman will look to include extra funds for the forest if a supplemental spending bill is initiated. However, the Forest Service actually received more than it asked for.
"In the budget documents we have seen from the Forest Service and the president's budget, there is no direct request specifically for fire suppression in the San Bernardino Mountains,' Specht said.
"They do have an account nationally for fuels reduction. I would hope ... the agency intends to spend money out of its overall budget on fuels reduction (there.)'
Officials with the Forest Service's national office could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Ruth Wenstrom, a Forest Service spokeswoman in San Bernardino, said the agency will have treated more than 10,000 acres of land by October. The agency will be able to work on far fewer acres next year, she said.
"We're grateful that Congress is still thinking about the needs we have here it's certainly more than we used to get before the tree mortality problems started,' she said.
"At the same time though, we have lots of additional needs and lots of community safety issues that won't be addressed (in 2006) if we get $5million.'
She said the Forest Service has been unable to complete thinning or clearing projects in many mountain communities, including Arrowbear Lake, Big Bear Lake, Crestline, Running Springs and Valley of Enchantment.
"We've been focused around Lake Arrowhead, but there are a lot of other mountain communities we haven't gotten to,' she said. "We have a lot of fuel treatment we need (to complete) so we can better protect these communities.'
Several of these areas were devastated by fire in 2003 when more than 250 homes were razed by flames in the mountains.
Also included in the federal spending plan is:
$2.5 million for state and local forestry grants for fuel reduction around the San Bernardino National Forest.
$2 million will help pay for the relocation of the San Bernardino National Forest's headquarters to the former Defense Finance and Accounting Center buildings at Tippecanoe Avenue and Mill Street in San Bernardino.
-
So what there saying is they are pretty much done with the tree thing. ???
-
The tree thing is far from over in the area and will continue for years.
There are many other sources of funds being used for dead & dying trees in addition to fuel reduction projects. One major source of money comes from the NRCS.

Can I please get Tim Tate's phone number for the removal of dead tree? Had it, but have misplaced it... :-[
-
Las, I have it at home, if no one posts it, I will tonite...
-
THANK YOU, ANGELWOLF!
-
Tim Tate's phone number is (909) 337-1225
-
Thank You, John! :2thumbsup:
I saw a neighbor had a dead tree so I knocked on their door.
They didn't know anything about this program and had been trying to find someone to get the tree down.
If you see a dead tree you might tell the homeowner about this program and give them this phone number to make arrangements.
What a great resource this Forum is in serving our community.
AND the members of the Fire Safe Council! GOOD JOB!!! :2thumbsup:
-
Hello every one, This is Tim with the hazardous tree program. Just a little information on your current question. Our phone number has just been changed for our office. The new number is (909) 336-7080. If you dial our old number (909) 337-1225 it should roll over to our current number.

-
Thanks for the great work you are doing Tim.
-
Welcome to the forum Tim, and keep up the good work!
-
-
Is this just for San Bernadino County, or is LA County included ???
Donna

I believe that these programs are for the San Bernardino side but why not ask the guy that spearheads the program up here. Tim Tate is a very helpful young man. Call him direct or ask someone in his office. Tim Tate's new phone number is (909) 336-7080

Just a quick note on the free fire wood in arrowhead......
We made an appointment, drove up there in a big pickup, and were ready to load that baby full ourselves.
Not the case.......Not only was it GREAT wood (alot of cedar, pine, and oak, and I believe some eucalyptus) but THEY loaded for us!!
I highly recommend this program to anyone in our area. It is well worth the drive! The guys at the fire station were so nice to us, even though we came right when they were having some relay pratices with extremely heavy hoses etc.
If we hadnt already bought wood this summer.........I would have taken more, Thank you to the guys that helped us up there!
-
Thank you very much for the kind words dnrfuller. I will pass those allong to the crew incharge of firewood. Just a heads up our splitter is broken currently but should be back up and running soon. For the time being scheduled appointments are on hold and will be rescheduled when the splitter is running. Should you have any questions about firewood or would like to schedule an appointment call (909) 336-7080 and ask for Mellisa.
-
I agree with all of the compliments about Melissa and the staff at the Fire Station involved in the free firewood. Although I have not been able to get up there for my wood, Melissa and all of the staff I have spoken with have been wonderfull. We had to change our first appointment due to work schedules, then they called to let me and my son know the splitter was broken and they will re-schedule us at a later date. I am thankful we didn't drive up there only to find there was no wood available.
Good thoughts for good people!
C. Smith
-
I called today and was told the splitter has been fixed and they will start taking appointments again on Monday.
-
we highly recommend taking advantage of this offer, as not to many things in life are free anymore!
Make a day of it......enjoy the drive through crestline and arrowhead. :)
-
Is there a limit on how much wood they allow you to have or is it take as much as you can haul? Thanks for any info. :)
-
For fire wood appointments in Lake Arrowhead you are given one standard truck load. If you bring your car or pick up they will load it up to a safe capacity. That means to the top of the bed, if you bring a trailer or a big truck we will give you only what would fit in a standard truck bed as a max limit. If you have any questions or would like to make an appointment please feel free to call our office. (909) 336-7080, and we are now taking appointments again.
-
I hear the Tree Offices are moving, anyone know where to or when? Can we still get the firewood?

I hear the Tree Offices are moving, anyone know where to or when? Can we still get the firewood?
Just call Tim Tate at (909) 336-7080 and he'll give you all the information you need.
-
You can't just call and make an appointment anymore.
They are now doing a lottery where you have to send in a post card and if they pick your name then you can get the free wood.
-
To answer a few questions!
1. It is correct that our office will be moving. Possibly as soon as the end week we will be moving to a new office in Running Springs on Whispering Pines Dr. Currently we are still located at County Fire Station 91 in Lake Arrowhead and our phone number is still (909) 336-7080. I will be sure to announce when we move, as well as post directions and a address.
2. Because of popular demand we have made changes to the Firewood Program. It is now a lottery system. To enter you must submit a 3x5 card with name, address, and phone number to our office. All information is placed into a computer and the computer randomly selects a specific number of cards per week. We then call the persons and schedule an appointment. If you have any other questions please call our office.

Does the tree removal program still exist? I've tried calling Tim and there is no answer as well as no voicemail. In addition, I've tried emailing him and I received a mailer-daemon. I've got a tree in my backyard that would no doubt cost thousands of dollars to have removed. It appears as though it's dieing and my neighbor and I are both concerned that a 300 lb. branch is going to come crashing through our homes. Any suggestions?
-
I've contacted Tim and he should respond to your posting soon.
-
Thank you Wrightwood!
-

Thank you for responding, Tim. I've written to the email address you posted in your response.

A huge THANK YOU to Tim Tate for the speedy response and removal of my ENORMOUS tree!!! I came home today to a crane parked in front of my house. I had no idea the county was going to be removing the tree today. Tim did email me via the WW Forum, but I rarely log on. The gentleman from the county that headed up this project told me it would have run about $15,000 to have it removed! INCREDIBLE!!! Sadly this tree has been around since the dinosaurs roamed our mountains. But luckily my home as well as my neighbors are saved from a possible disasterous and deadly situation.
Thank you again, Tim!!!!
-
Patchylou... Photos will be posted when I get a chance.
It was a 120 ton crane and towered over the 120-150 foot tree they removed.
One piece 20 foot section the crane removed weighed 10,000 lbs.
-
Wrightwood, I can't WAIT to see your photos! If I had any idea they were going to be here I would have stayed home from work! Here are some photos that I've taken. No doubt you'll have better shots, but then again you're the photographer, not me. ;) They've been here since 9:00 this morning and they are still here, trying to remove the remaining pieces.

The pictures don't do it justice. Mollymaekin and Snowball can attest to the size of this tree. I am somewhat saddened because there have been many a night I've sat on my back deck and enjoyed the grey squirrels running around and nesting in this tree. Our homes and lives take presidence however. Thanks, Tim!
-
Don't forget these projects are a team effort. The forum helped make it happen.
As soon as you posted I contacted Tim on behalf of the Wrightwood Fire Safe Council and asked him to respond to the forum post. This entire process took place in 4 days.
-
Patchy, et. al.;
What will be done with the wood they hauled away?
-
OH - and one of our newest business owners (don't know the name) the wood carvers, took most of the wood, including the MASSIVE pieces! My fiance's kids named the tree Pete, Pete the Pine Tree. I sure hope the carvings of "Pete" bring enjoyment to those that purchase him. :2thumbsup:
While the county was picking up the remaining pieces, one of the carvers began a bear.
Thanks also to the carver that is going to give me a sweet bear in remembrance of Pete! :)
-
Wrightwood, you are absolutely correct! Thank you to you and to the Wrightwood Fire Safe Council as well! After Tim posted his response, I emailed him on the 12th. Today is the 15th!!! Talk about SWIFT RESPONSE! Phew!!!!!!!!!
Makgirl, I think my previous post answered your question, but just in case. The largest pieces went to the wood carving business in town and the smaller pieces went to my neighbors and myself! We'll all be toasty warm this summer! Thanks, Pete! ;D
-
Jerry Stringham - the wood sculpter next to Wrightwood Fire Sation.
Jerry will be using two pieces of the wood to sculpt trim pieces for the new Wildfire Condition sign installed by the Fire Safe Council at the fire station.
-
OH MY GOSH! I'm thrilled to learn that Pete will be put to such good use!!! *tear* :D

WOW!!! Holy Tree Batman!!! AWESOME Photos, as always!!! With your permission I'd like to save copies of these, please.
Okay, the kicker... notice the Country Life Real Estate sign? My home is for sale and a realtor from Torrance brought some potential buyers up to view my house yesterday. I guess they showed up right in the thick of it all!! Wish I could have seen the looks on their faces. hehe
-
The looky lous were allowed 15 mintues to view the house while tree crews took a quick break.
-
That's 10,000s lbs being lifted over 120-150 foot tree tops
(http://www.wrightwoodfsc.com/HazardTrees/CraneTree9.JPG)
-
GINORMOUS!!!!
-
Can you get slices of the tree and make it a table top? It's huge and a sad loss but considering the damage it could cause it's better to take it down.
That machinery is enormous!!
-
Patchylou, I am glad everything worked out. I am sorry I was unable to contact you prior to starting the job, however in this case the priority was removing the tree before the "big storm" hit on the weekend. It was a great point brought up about the forum, the close communication in the community got us in contact. Wrightwood said it best, there is a large group effort in all of the projects done in Wrightwood, and the Fire Safe Council has always been great in being there and working to get the projects done. Wrightwood is very lucky to have such a close community and such a dedicated Fire Safe Council. :2thumbsup:

Yep, that's Jerry and his son Jerry. I've got two pieces of their work! I haven't gotten my bench delivered yet, so you can still get a peak of it at their shop!

Yes, that's it!!!! I absolutely love it! Now I have to figure out where its place of honor will be.

my mom thought that one was really cool. She is saving her pennies for a few carvings.
