Blue Ridge Campground is also nice. It's just a couple miles up the (bumpy) Blue Ridge Road from Inspiration Point.
Table Mountain Campground is nice, too.
Jackson Lake has tables, and there's fishing.

Grassy Hollow has some very nice picnic areas.  The gate closes at 4 p.m. but you can move your car outside the gate and are welcome to stay until sundown.  There is no overnight camping there.  There are also some nice hikes from there.

Table Mtn. Campground is under concession and you have to pay but there is a small picnic area between the campground and the old ski sunrise lodge next to the big parking lot.  The sign saying Table Mtn. picnic area is pretty small and beat up so you might miss it!

Does anyone know what's going on at Grassy Hollow? There is a huge film crew there. (At least that's what I think it is...)

They were filming a car commercial at Grassy Hollow as well as Jackson Flats and Table Mountain Campgrounds today.  Filming finished today and everything should be back to normal tomorrow.  I believe it was an advertisment for the Chevy Silverado.

There's a Mercedes commercial out that, I believe, was filmed on the repaved portions of the highway.

I have seen the same commercial and thought the same thing, filmed on Hwy 2 on the new pavement past Eagles Roost...

correct... sort of.  ;)

The gate is generally closed in winter time when snow conditions exist and the entrance road/parking lot are icy and snow covered. At that time, it is advised to park along the highway and walk in for day use or to come inside the visitor center.

That makes perfect sense. I'm always a little nervous about parking inside the gates when I come to hike in the afternoon. BTW my eternal thanks to the volunteers of Grassy Hollow, I love that place.
