Title: Help with Avatars
Post by: WWRebecca on Jul 11, 05, 06:41:20 PM
I have changed my avatar several times now without any problem. Tonight I am trying to change it again and it absolutely will not make my changes. I am doing the same thing I always do....I change the picture on the website I am linking from......then updating the address on this site.

What gives?

Also, I have tried to change my quotes etc........and it will not update it either......Anyone have a clue as to whats up?
Thanks!

I don't know what the problem is, I have tried changing mine (the same way I have before) and I could not for the life of me change it so I gave up!

Sorry, no help here!

ForestGal,
Make sure to try the 50 x 50 pixel ones as the maximum allowable on The Wrightwood Forum is 65 x 65 pixels.

Go to the webpage and find the little photo or avatar you want to use.
http://chickadee-dee-dee.com/freeavatargallery/

If your using Internet Explorer, place your cursor over the avatar you want and right click. Then pick properties from the list. Copy the Address (URL).

For instance I placed my cursor over the 50x50 hummingbird and the Address (URL) says:
http://chickadee-dee-dee.com/freeavatargallery/50040.jpg

Now go into your forum profile, Pick Forum Profile Information in the left column. Check the box that says "I have my own pic". Paste or type the Address (URL) into the box. Go to the bottom of the page and hit Change Profile.

Yes any small picture that is no more than 65 x 65 pixles will work.
(but... no adult pictures  ;)  )

I've checked the size and I think I'm doing everything right! Any suggestions?
These are not too larege according to the directions right?

Also another question, do you know how to take an avatar that is too large and make it smaller?

this one is especially funny!

You can't reduce a gif's size unless you're in a program that supports animation.

I guess whoever developed them didn't like the Raiders. You'll need to look for one as I don't have it.

Oh brother did I mess that one up. I was thinking the max size was 85x85 and that why it's the size it is. It should have been 65 max.

I've tried to figure that out and could not so far.
I doubled check the settings and it says 65x65 max.

I changed the setting so it's resized for the time being.

supermom's got through because she is Super!!    I love her avatar and also the saying underneath it.   I'm going to try to find a smiling Grinch to go with her "Welcome Christmas".

Wrightwood, would it slow down the forum or hurt us in any way to have a bigger allocation for the avatars?   Sometimes I find one I want to use and it is just 20 bigger than the allotment amount.   I know that avatars are an extra but I like to play with the pictures.

FunkyGorilla, are you playing with avatar because right now all I'm seeing is the little red x.

The bigger the pic the more that has to be downloaded... It isn't noticeable on DSl but those with dial up sure notice the difference.

OK, mea culpa guys.  Up to now when you went to add an avetar and it was too big, you got a little message saying you could not use it because it was too big. I erroneously thought because it went though you must have changed the maximum size.   Sorry, sorry, sorry.  Now.... how do I keep my picture, but resize it to make it legal.  I have just spent the last hour trying to figure it out, and, nothing.  I have saved it, resized it, but what do I do then to link it to the website.  Help... I love my picture, but don't want to break the rules.  Thank you anyone.....

Super mom I'm not picking on ya just using you as an example.  ;)

5.01Kb
(http://mud.mm-a5.yimg.com/image/2024147656)

2.4kb
(http://www.wrightwoodcalif.com/forum/avatars/superMom.JPG)

If everyone had a bigger avatar of 5.01kb that would = 75.1 kb of avatars per page

If everyone has a 2.4kb avatar that would = 36kb of avatars per page.

Dial up speed is 56kb/s (if your lucky) so with the bigger avatars it would take them 1.3 sec just to load avatars. With the smaller avatars it only takes .6 seconds. I know that seems like no time at all but thats just the avatars.... Then there is the header at the top and all the links and all the text in the forum. It saves time for those that don't have DSL.

Other?

Thank you soooo much Wrightwood!!!!!  With all else you have to do you took the time to resize my silly avatar for me - YOU ARE THE BEST!!! I honestly need to find a course in avatar 101, so that is my next quest.
No offense taken FunkyGorilla, I am always learning and always appreciate any information given.  As my teenager keeps reminding me, the fact that someone MY AGE can even navigate in the computer world is pretty good. (She's a peach!)
I will now stick to the 65 x 65 size.
Thanks again Wrightwood.....

You've just described me perfectly (and I'm not your mom)!   ;D  At work we just do what we have to do, with their programs.  That doesn't mean we know how to use computers....  :-\
