Title: First efforts with new camera system
Post by: Wildman on Aug 05, 05, 10:34:41 PM
I recently purchased a Canon D20 with a stabilized telephoto and wide angle lens.  Wrightwood has been helping me get started and after over a thousand photos, I see why getting a great shot is so difficult.

This is a sunset on Table Mountain Campground.

These are a family of quail that visit our pond.  These are the teenage group....we have several more coveys that have the smaller guys.  Notice the sentinals above.

The quail family was feeding in the undergrowth behind the house.  I didn't see them at first.  Camo quail.

If my book is correct, this is a Scott's Oriole visiting the hummingbird feeder.  Only saw it once.

Finally, this is our cat sitting on a ladder I placed to go up on the roof for something.  I have no idea why the eyes came out like that but it looks like you can see the rods and cones that make them such good night hunters.

Those are only photos that would consider sharing at this point.  Learning photography has been a much greater challenge then I anticipated.  Having a digital system means I can experiment until I figure things out.

Thank you.  Wrightwood, Royce and a number of others have posted outstanding photos on this site.  I see now that it is much more difficult then I ever believed....even with good equipment.  Thankfully, I have digital gear and plenty of storage space.  I'll post something after the next 1,000 shots.

Please don't wait that long - those photos are great already!

Here I am over 1,000 shots later.  The digital format is a blessing and a curse.  It allows the luxury of taking a lot of pictures and eliminating the ones that don't work.  I never realized just how difficult it is to line up the subject, lighting, mood, etc.  It is getting easier to just grab the camera and snapshoot something when it happens spontaneously.

The first photo is of our Belgain Draft Mares, Katie and JC.  Honest and true, these horses are truly a part of our family.  They stand very still in the first sun that comes into their pen each morning...basking before they get fed.

This was an excellent shot!

This is a shot that I took of the moon rising over Mountain Top. Wrightwood helped me tweak a bit to give this effect.

Wildman,

You might already know this (I wished I would have know when I got my 20D in March) but when you change lenses it is good to point the camera towards the ground reducing the chances of particles falling on you mirror or sensors.  It tricky but I have reduced my problem with specs.

If you are interested in using a smaller camera bag that accomodates the camera and one lens take a look at the Lowepro Day Runner.  You can look at mine anytime you like.

The backpack holds everything but much to bulky for me to take everywhere.

I love my camera!!!  It is night and day from the point and shoot digital cameras I have had (still do).

Good point Kew
"If I shoot 10 rolls of 36 exposures (35mm era) I feel very lucky if I get 1 good shot."

Those 360 shots on film would easily be $400 to have processed. With today's higher end digitals you can shot 500-1000 shots in a day, process them the same day and come out with a hand full or more of keepers (most of the time). Total cost = $0
Even if you amortize equipment cost it's only  3 or 4 sessions and the camera and lens is paid for.

Wildman definitely has a good eye for composition.

The next three pictures were taken last week, just before the storm.  All of the critters were really hitting the feeders hard.  This guy was absolutely fearless.  I was using my wide angle lens and he was very comfortable allowing me to get very close.  When I was done shooting, I tried Wrightwood's trick and had him sitting on my finger while he drank from the feeder.

Here he is sitting on the bail of an old bucket filled with geraniums...he really looks bedraggled to me.

Here is another.  I really think the hummers look like little flying jewels.

Thanks, Wrightwood!  The hardest part is getting up that early!
Actually, I think I will be prowling around at dawn when we have these cloud covers...makes a nice effect.

Thanks, Bostonbob but there are many journeys ahead before the Grasshopper would think of that comparison.  I'm barely beyond using automatic everything.

Wrightwood has an incredible eye and sense of timing.  He also has first rate shooting and post production tools.  I continue to learn from him every day.

Here is a few more.  The sky around here is beautiful any time of day but especially so at sunrise and sunset.  Here is a sunset cloud from our front porch.  The evening I took this, the colors lasted well after twilight and the owls hooting.

Totally different but equally as spectacular is Wrightwood under a mantle of snowfall.   This was a morning several years ago...after a really big dump.  This was one of those storms that took days to fully dig out from.  Can you guess where it was taken?  Maybe this year......

I don't think it's the West end of town because you can't see Sheep Canyon from the West end of town.

I've taken plenty of photos along Hwy2 and they look very similar.

Gonna try and share something a little different.  Over Labor Day, worked for the Forest Service up in Monache Meadows as one of the OHV Rangers.  We stayed in an old cabin with a woodburning stove that was a delight to use and kept the place warm.  We also packed out some supplies and mules that had been in most of the summer.  I just finished making some stationary cards for my friend who is many things, including a packer.  I used my Photoshop program to change the look of the photos a bit.  He really liked them.  Thought I was some kind of painter.....

The first one is the coffee pot on the stove in the morning light. Coffee somehow tastes better when boiled over cast iron stove.

The horse and mules stand patiently at the cabin's hitching rail..ready to get their panniers loaded and go to work.

There's a couple more that kind of finish the story but my server is down for maintenance.  I'll post them later.
Title: Re: First efforts with new camera system
Post by: Wildman on Nov 18, 05, 02:33:00 PM
The cabin we stayed in has a pasture surrounding it.  Like a my place, the horses graze where the morning light takes off the chill.  Even on Labor Day, there was a freezing frost every morning.

Monache Meadows is one of the largest meadows in the Sierras.  There are trails and two tracks that wind around all of it.  The dust in the distance is the pack string crossing the meadow.  The grand vistas remind you of simpler times.

This is one of the creek crossings that can give a packer trouble if the string is fresh.  Here's my friend coming out of Snake Creek Crossing.

There you have it.  I made him a series of cards and envelopes with these pictures and more.  I didn't tell him that using the Photoshop techniques can cover up a multitude of photographic sins.

These guys are the American Gold Finches that show up around October and stay until Spring.  I believe that they move to the high country after they leave here.  They eat those tiny seeds that cost like they are made of gold.  Neat to watch and they really like to hang upside down when they eat.  This feeder sits outside our window and they provide hours of entertainment watching them.  The males are brightly colored and match the autumn leaves for a while.

We have some of these birds that hang out in our peach tree pretty much all year.  I didn't know the like thistle seeds, but they LOVE ripe peaches.  All the peaches from the top of the tree are half-eaten when we get them down.  The cats love to watch them fly in and out of the branches. (Catnip patch planted at the base of the tree.  Cats roll around all morning getting high)

Not sure if you realized it but you got a nice view of Mt. Whitney and Lone Pine Peak. in your Sierra shot. The prominent sloping ridge that dominates the left side of the Lone Pine P (everyone mistakes that for Whitney because it looks higher) and the distant ridge with the saw teeth (above the saddle cantle) is Mt. Whitney and the Keeler Needle.

While going through files I backed up to a new hard drive, I found this picture of Farrel, our Umbrella Cockatoo and his life long friends.  The chickens were raised from chicks in a swimming pool covered with wire and lived right underneath Farrel's cage.  He was the first thing they saw in the morning and the last at night.  When the chickens went to an outside area, Farrel would open his cage....waddle out to the chain link fence...climb it and roost with the chickens.

Whenever we couldn't find Farrel, that's the first place we looked.  They seemed to enjoy his company and they all snuggled up for the night.

Sometimes, I am starting to feel like I can capture with the camera....what I am seeing with my eyes.  I get frustrated when I cannot duplicate what my mind remembers.  Gets better every load of pictures.  I'm working on a blind right now to photograph the wildlife here without bothering them.

Great shot, Wildman!  I love the scrub jays - we had one that came around for 2 or 3 years, and would land on us to get peanuts.  We called him Crazy Jay.  One time we were sitting outside, without any peanuts readily available, and he landed on my husband's head and started pecking away!  That hurts, so I went and got the peanuts.  He could be kind of a nuisance, even flying into the garage to help himself, but he was fun.  Don't know what happened to him.

I still think the scrub jays are the friendliest bird overall and the flickers seemed to be the most nervous when humans are within sight.

Wildman I so very much enjoy viewing your wonderful photos.

I thought I would post one I took of my dog CASH @ Table Mtn. CG a week ago.  It almost looks like a fake background to me lol.  I will post a sunrise pic from the house when I get back from running an errand.   I am using a Kodak DX6490 but would like to get a camera like yours one day.

Redondo, huh.  I could have sworn that was Cotton's Point to the south and the railroad tracks just in from the beach.  Very nice shot also, Bostonbob.

I called Wrightwood to tell him to check out tonight's sunset.  He said it was already dark up in Wrightwood.  He did talk me through taking a series of photos and merging them into a panorama of the sunset.  This is how it turned out.  It is actually five photos taken hand held.

I took this photo this morning in the front of the house.  We still have four or five hummers hanging around.  They are extremely active and seem very happy, in spite of what I perceive to be awfully cold weather for a hummer.  I did some research on the Web and hummers wintering over are not unusual for the Western US.  No matter, we enjoy them any time of the year.

You would ask.....Wrightwood would probably be the better person to ask.  I know it takes an 8 MB picture and pretty much acts like a high end 35mm film camera but I really don't know much about the inner workings and the difference between the two cameras (other then price perhaps....the Canon EOS 20D is around 1,200 bucks)  I sure do like it, though.

The warm days have brought the wildlife out in force.  I took these pictures today.

This rabbit allowed me to walk extremely close and then just kept on eating.  Good thing the roses are not in bloom....that's a favorite of these guys.

We still have four or five hummingbirds that frequent the feeders from dawn until dark.  Here is one that I thought looked cool with the sun reflecting through the feeder onto the bird.

This guy was in my face and didn't retreat when I got close enough to take this shot.

The colors on this birds neck were most unusual.  The red and gold really stood out.

Wildman, it was not seamless when they were first put together.  The sky gave me issues but I just blew it up really big and used the clone to get rid of any lines...  Very time consuming, but the finished product is worth it.

You got it, Chuck.  Couldn't sleep...darn owls--I can hear them but can't see them to take a picture.  Here's a few I found in the files that I go through every day to see what is worth keeping or not.

Every holiday, my wife decorates the house in the appropriate theme.  This photo was taken at Thanksgiving and the colors and light seemed to be very pleasing on the dining room table.  I was experimenting with taking pictures indoors at the time.

By now, everyone knows that I feed a lot of birds and critters here on the place.  The Scrub Jays are the most interesting  and comical of the lot.  The colors on this were especially interesting.

Different Jay...different feeder.  This guy was above the Suet feeder at the time.

Finally, this obviously wasn't taken by me but someone asked what we do with our draft horses and this is a good example.  Katie and JC are pulling our hay wagon in the Sheriff's Cattle Drive Parade in Victorville.  I have my two grandchildren sitting beside me who got to practice their parade waves.  This was the year that I discovered they were not bothered by camels and large pigs...both of which were next to our route of travel.

Notice how they are listening (I must have just said somehthing like, "Step up").  They will move those ears around like radar during the entire trip.  I can almost just whisper and they hear.

I do this parade and Bishop Mule Days each year.  The horses thrive on the crowds and excitement.  I think I do too.

Going up there in a week to do some more shooting and should be neat with all the snow they have now.

I'm actually going to stake out two owls that start hooting around four in the afternoon.  If I can find where their day tree is, I might be able to get a shot during golden time when they start hooting.

I'm also looking forward on Saturday to getting a shot of a hummingbird feeder covered in snow and hummers feeding.

I will definately look into Monopods.  Sounds like it would work well with my style of shooting.

For the longest time, I have tried to figure out what was keeping five or six hummingbirds around.  It wasn't just the feeder that I have kept active.  Today, I got a shot of one of the hummers eating at the Manzanita bush near our house.  It is covered with flowers and thick with the hummers.  The nectar that I thought was sugar in some of my earlier shots is probably the pollen from the Manzanita.  Here is the revelation shot of hummers at flowers in the dead of Winter.

My chickens are really interesting to watch when they are out of their pen and scratching around.  They hunt down bugs like they have radar.  This is our Aracuna (who lays green eggs) zeroing in on a bug.

Buzz, the Wonder Dog, and Sketchy the Cat are best friends.  They literally don't go anywhere without one another.  In the afternoon, they siesta on the front sidewalk and watch the world go by.  There will sometimes be fifty to one hundred quail and birds right around them while they take their naps.

Thank you both.  That was the best out of over a hundred shots I took over three sessions.  I use the sports setting and I think it takes 5 shots per second.  It was such a revelation to see that there was actually a natural food source that they utilized.

My goal was to get a shot of a hummingbird at the flowers with snow on them.  Maybe next week.

Beautiful shots, but on my computer I can only see the left half of the hummer, and I can't see the chicken's head.  I can see all of Buzz, but no part of Sketchy.  Is it something I can fix, so that I can see the whole shot?  Or is that all that was posted?

I have also seen hummingbirds snagging small insects out of the air. If you catch that one, Wildman,.........

Forestgal-The tip that Surfer_Dude posted will work and give you the full shot.  Wrightwood posted some thoughts on different web browsers and how they see things with certain settings.  Perhaps he can share them again.  I always size things to the limits that Wrightwood has for posting.

I have read that hummingbirds do not feed their young nectar but insects.  I never knew that insects play a major part of the hummers diet.  If I can capture that....

Thanks for the comments.  It took about 125 shots to get the one that came out.  Thankfully, I have a setting on the camera that takes around 5 shots per second and a lot of hard drive space.

Very well could be.  I know that I am fascinated by the detail one can see with the telephoto lens versus what you see with the naked eye.  Makes me want to get a Ghilly suit and sneak up on one with a Macro closeup lens.

Got very lucky today at work.  Out on a break with my cam and this guy flew across the sky.  He landed on a palm tree.  Had to take about 100 shots with him moving from tree to pole to tree until he let me capture this shot...  It looks a tad unreal as I zoomed in so much the digital zoom took over but WOW!!!

That last Anna's hummer is fantasic...I didn't know the manzanitas bloomed all year.....good for the hummers.....So the five you have at winter stay all winter.....they don't migrate?
Title: Re: First efforts with new camera system
Post by: Wildman on Jan 23, 06, 05:58:17 PM
Hummers are supposed to migrate (it says in the book) but we have had these five or six since Fall continously.  Wrightwood had one at his feeder and the temperature was 20o outside.  Last year, one showed up during the big snowfall and stayed the rest of the year.  They must be hardier then they seem.
Title: Re: First efforts with new camera system
Post by: Wrightwood on Jan 23, 06, 06:17:50 PM
Wildman convinced me to put out a feeder and see if they were still around in Wrightwood.

I mixed up a sweeter than normal batch of sugar water and filled 2 feeders. After a couple of days at least 1 Anna's began showing up and once during a 20 degree morning. Yesterday the hummer was making regular visits during the day.

I figured the sweeter than normal mix would help prevent the syrup from freezing and give those little guys some extra kick. I used equal parts of sugar and water by volume.

I was also surprised on the manzanitas blooming right now. While in the Middle Fork of Lytle Creek over the weekend I didn't find any blooming manzanitas. Wildman must be doing something special to his plants.

During the spring/summer we also use about 4:1. I've read on hummingbird feeder instructions to use a heavier concentration when you first hang a new feeder, then you can back off. I can't picture that a heavier concentration could harm their tongues if it's recommended.

By the way who was it that talked to a hummingbird to find out it hurt their tongues?

Seems like a good deal of misinformation about hummers.

So much for my idea that hummers stay away in the winter ...I'll get me feeder out and make some hard core 50 50 nectar...And I'm considering putting up another feeder at 101..kitchen window....I miss that...

Last night, I was astonished to hear a hummer chirping in the tree by the feeder well after dark.  I got a flashlight and sure enough, he was feeding at the feeder in the dark.  Once I figured out how to use the flash, I spent 20 minutes trying to find the bird in the dark.  I could hear him but couldn't see him in the view finder.   Finally got one that shows just how dark it was outside.  The side light is coming from our front porch light.

Sometimes in the early morning or late afternoon, the sun comes through the feeders and illuminates the birds as they feeds.  Taken two days ago, this bird was fearless.

I don't know if he is gorgeous...but he is beatuful in his own right....and deserving of respect...Wolves have been given a bad name over time..Most likely from being misunderstood...The rocks in the belly stuff comes from an old verion of Little Red Riding Hood, which like most fairytales, has been influenced by the cultures it grew through...I've been to the wolf sanctuary in Lucerne Valley...I'd love to visit again....I couldn't believe how big they were.....I went there for a gentleman who had been bitten by a black widow....a couple of years ago...

I had the good fortune of being on the project with Wildman yesterday. This picture that I took was taken around 7 hours later than Wildman's photo. The clouds were like the tide coming in, they kept climbing up the mountains and shortly after my picture was taken, the clouds enveloped us. It was a pretty amazing day on Blue Ridge. Does anyone know what that metal cross is for, in front of the tree?

Angelwolf,
First let me say that $300-$400 cameras will take great pictures and in most instances look just as well in emails and on web pages as the expensive bad boys. Many photos that I've posted on this website were taken with inexpensive digital cameras.

When you are serious about taking photos and want to print high quality photos that's where the difference in camera quality starts to shine. Having full control over shutter speeds, aperture, ISO settings, autofocus points and high-speed continuous shooting.

The Rebel is a great camera but it does not compare to the 20D and the extra speed is well worth the difference in price but you'll get a whole lot more camera in a 20D than in a Rebel.

As Wildman said I would highly recommend buying from Costco as their return policy is so good. If you happen to have problems you return it and get another one. If you buy it elsewhere and have a problem it must be taken to a Canon service center.

Looks like the current price from Costco is $1299 with a lens

Post by: Chesslike on Jan 27, 06, 11:20:56 PM
Doesn't the Rebel have a plastic body and the 20D have a metal body, making it much more rugged. Wildman was telling me that his was accidently knocked off off of something and the only thing that happened to it was the battery case cracked. In the same type of fall, the Rebel probably would have been history.

my current camera is 5.o mp and cost about $700, I have never had a cheap camera.  I can do some manual stuff and change the fstops but can only go to f8 which is limiting me in my photography class.

ok im in for the big one....

did you get a telephoto lens too??

where did you get that?
can i use different lens or should i stay with the canon lenses...

how big is your card...  the guy recommended at least a 4 gig

Title: Re: First efforts with new camera system
Post by: Wildman on Jan 28, 06, 03:14:56 AM
I use Canon lenses.  They are both zoom.....100-400mm and 28-135mm.  I would like to get a wider wide angle someday.  The lenses are both stabilized and have auto focus if you choose to use it.    You can certainly buy a nonstabilized lens at a cheaper price.  Wrightwood has a number of other lenses...some much bigger then my long one.

I also got the two battery camera bottom and grip that really lets you shoot a long time.  Adds a nice feel and longer side grip also.

I have a 2 gb card.  I would buy 2 or three 2 gb cards.  If you corrupt a 4GB card....you could lose a lot of pictures.

I believe you can buy the remote triggering device from Canon.

Chickens grow on you.  Once you've eaten eggs that are fresh from chickens that can free range, you will never eat a store bought (up to six months old and still called fresh) egg again.  They each have distinctive personalities and are always glad to see you.

Light coming through the subject has a neat effect.  Many times I miss it because of lack of experience.  This is a hummingbird that was stretching his wing.  It just happened to hit the light right and sillouetted the feathers.  I had the setting wrong for the bird but right for the wing when it moved into the sun.  Interesting effect.

This Scrub Jay shot is a companion one to an earlier one.  The light seems to come through and make the feathers translucent.

I've had my website for about 9 months.  I have done pretty good with it.  It has paid for itself and the Epson printer I bought.

Blue is an Alaskan Grey Wolf.  We are not sure which region Niwah comes from but she is a Grey Wolf also.

Thanks,
Angelwolf

Niwah is my adopted wolf. Isn't she a pretty girl??
That is my tough nephew Marine getting a scalp cleaning from Niwah.
