Title: -sumner wright home-
Post by: TheSandman on Aug 26, 05, 12:04:51 AM
is anybody as fascinated with this structure as i am?  i finally found the home and walked around it when i visited a couple weeks ago.  what potential this place offers.  i'm becoming obsessed with wright's property primarily because it's just sitting there while holding the keys to wrightwood's history.

and i wish i had known years ago that lee marvin's cabin was two lots away.  for decades i walked past both cabins and never new what i was looking at.

thank you wrightwood museum.

Is this the Acorn Lodge?

No. The Wright home is on the southwest corner of Lark and Mill.

It's the brown "older looking" cabin on the Southwest corner of Mocking Bird and Mill.

Is this the Acorn Lodge?

Acorn Lodge is on the corner of Acorn and Mockingbird.  It too, has a lot of "history" in Wrightwood.  Come to think of it, so does "Robin Lodge" on the corner of Sparks and Robin.  Somebody needs to put a list of historical cabins together...

Don't forget the cabin on the corner of Victorville and Irene was only 6 yrs shy of being Bud's birthplace

..."Wrightwood has no history what so ever".

:f_ufo:

Well, since that is completely impossible, maybe we can get her to take a trip to the museum on a weekend.  :)

We purchased our cabin in April of this year.  Actually we made the decision in February when WW was under several feet of snow.  But not until we closed on the property did we get a chance to explore the neighborhood. We were curious about that old looking cabin directly across the street.   One day I was perusing the history section of this forum and I saw a picture of Sumner Wright's cabin. I say to my wife " that kinda looks like the cabin across the street..." She says your kidding.  We print out the picture and compare it to the cabin across the street and sure enough, its the same cabin! We had no idea when we bought the place that we were moving next door to a WW historical landmark... and Lee Marvin's cabin a couple of lots away to boot. Not to mention that fact that we have (almost) lake front property.. Lake Wright that is.  You can be that if we ever decide to sell this cabin (unlikely) the future owners will know all this stuff before they buy.  Now if they would just fill the lake up with water again.. ;-)

I am also kindof curious to know where exactly the San Andreas fault runs in this area. From every thing I have been able to gather it looks like it runs though the lake, then just to the south of Wright's cabin and along Oriole, but that is just a guess.

Actually the Homes and I more than share a property line...We Co-own the lot between us with an agreement not to build on it and leave it as open land..We share the upkeep and taxes and neither can do anything without the others consent.
    Only in Wrightwood! LOL

Almost all our neighbors own at least 2 adjoining lots and that keeps the "Circle" open and  parklike.KW..Did you notice the Huge place across from Tom recently went up for Sale? With the 2 Lots North of it..Quite a bargain even for the prices today.

Have wondered of the proximity to the original Wright Ranch of my place...Seems far enough away to give privacy..yet close enough to the homestead for easy access and security...According to the deed it was sold to a Mary Hiltebrand in 1928 and PSWT&SB became Security Title and insurance Co. Then in 1928 Mary gives trust Deed to Lewis J. Oliver for $1,150 . Mary still owned the place up until 1946.

Now...Stop me when I'm wrong..But I heard the place across from the Robin lodge was the home to the grocer in WW and was also built in the 20's. He raised up a bunch of kids there and it also has a Meluso chimney. Back when the Grocery Store was where the First feather shop is now at the bottom of Park. Most of these houses were built near the same time and there are big similarities in their designs.

I do remember another "grocer", the Drurys (sp?) lived on lark across the street from the Anderson's, just below us.  In the 60's Drury had a little grocery store where Mt. High Pizza is now located.

Isn't history GREAT!

When I first started coming to Wrightwood, in 1965, the little market where Mile High Pizza now exists, was called Smith's Market (I think it was already Smith's by then).  And I remember shopping at Holiday Foods (now Jensen's), when they were in the building that is now Copper Creek and First Feather.

I have lived in my house, a couple of blocks from the properties you are discussing here, for over 28 years, so I know exactly which cabins you are talking about, although I don't know anything about them except what I have learned here.  Yes, history IS fun - although I sure didn't like that subject when I was in school and HAD to learn it!

I'll triple that $20,000 price that Glen Price paid and give you $60,000 for it.  ;D

Looks like I am a close neighbor of yours. I am on Lark directly across the street from Wright's Cabin... which seems to be different than the Wright's House.

Are you close to Wright's Lake (Bog), or between Acorn and Spruce?

We are just west of Wright's Lake on the North Side of Lark... used to be Sister Mary's place... we see Wright's Cabin out the front door of our cabin.

You guys are killing me, about the MELUSO house.

Let me try putting some things straight about the Meluso house, pops yes that would be my dad Joe Meluso built the house on Edna and lark right around 48 years ago. He did live in the cabin next to his house on Edna while he was building the brick house on Edna and lark.
Joe owned the house up until he sold it, just a few months ago.
A very close friend of mine had been watching the house for us.
No Meluso's live in Wrightwood anymore.
And please tell your real-estate agent that Joe Meluso is still alive and kicking at 88 and just stop working a couple of years ago.And still owns a boat.
I guess rumors still fly around  town....LOL
Any more questions about the Meluso house feel free to ask.

Joe's son LOcAl

Yes I live in Hawaii, pops is down near Dana point, he did not place any trophies in the Newport ensanada race, he is talking about this year being the last one. I think this will be his 28th year of the race.

Montanabear,
Good to hear from you, was wondering what happened to you. If you get to cold in Montana and need a good thawing out look us up. This forum cracks me up, love reading about all the things going on in town.

Does anyone know what is happening to the sag pond/old lake that used to be across from this home?? Lots of activity and such going on... Near Mill rd.

I check the forum often but never see anything about this activity, not sure if someone is actually thinking of BUILDING there.

Thanks.

The gentleman who owns the "Lee Marvin" house across the street on Mill (SW corner of Mill & Mockingbird) owns that parcel and is having it cleaned up with the intention of making a little park-like setting on that property.  To my knowledge, that parcel is not buildable (if that's a word....)

But he cut down the elderberry bush.  :'(
Unfortunately it appears to be bulldozed indiscriminately. Many native species (elderberry, wild rose, native yarrow, etc.) were scraped away. Piles of dirt are all over.
I doesn't look very good.  :(

Oh bummer.... that is unfortunate... Its like he just left the large trees and wiped everything else out.
