The Radio Shack in Derby, KS, the next town south from Wichita, also happens to be the local HAM radio sales/tech shop. Several folks there, including the manager, hold a ticket. Here's a link to the store:

Tuesday, I wandered in just before closing time, and was talking to the manager, Mark, KB0MOF, and mentioned to him that I hadn't been able to trip any of the 2 meter repeaters in the area. He told me that most of the local repeaters don't use a CTCSS/PL subaudible tone, since there isn't nearly the RF interference issues that we experience in California.
So, this morning, I fired up my VX-150 HT, turned off the Tone Encode function, and hit the Transmit key. The Derby repeater responded with nearly full quieting. Go figure...
If interested, here's a link to the Wichita Amateur Radio Club (WARC):

The link titled "Grid" is "The Grounded Grid", their monthly newsletter. On the last page of the December issue (and perhaps all of them) there is a list of the local nets, and the days/times they are active.
I think I'll wander into the next club meeting next week, and see what they are all about.
Peace and 73s all

P.S. Mark also said that if I brought in my PRO-95 scanner, he would clone the local frequencies into it. So, after work today, I'm off to Radio Shack again!

Very cool. The machine should have opened with your radio sending a tone. But if you had CTCSS decode active you would not have heard the repeater. Even some repeaters that use PL don't trsnmit it out. It's filterd out of the output signal. So you would have to have encode on and decode off.
