Title: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: johnNjeri on Sep 24, 02, 01:09:49 PM
I was wondering if anybody has some clever or interesting animal stories they'd like to share pertaining to living in WW. I don't know if mountain lions are around, but I know we have plenty of racoons, coyotes and (as this forum reported) bears. Probably lots of snakes too. I love the Stellers Jays and Scrub Jays too, and ofcourse all those other cheerful birds we routinely see (and hear!).

I notice a lot of "missing pets" signs around, and was wondering if some wild creatures are devouring them. I guess its a reminder to keep a close watch on our beloved pets.

Has anyone ever seen big horn sheep around these parts? I saw the buffalo pictures from LPC and thought they were interesting. Surreal, actually.

I saw a big coyote in my driveway on LPC and wondered if others would like to share the beauty of wildlife that abounds around us here in WW.

I had a dream last night that a skunk came in through the doggy door and stunk up my whole house... does that count?   ::)

Two years ago I was in my backyard and heard some ravens raising a ruckus. I looked up at the hillside and saw them diving at something moving thru the brush. I thought maybe it was just a coyote with a fresh kill (or some tasty trash morsels) and decided to think nothing of it. But then I started hearing a strange sound that almost made my hair stand on end. I went in and got my binoculars and focused in on the action. It was a beautiful mountain lion that was getting rather frustrated by two ravens trying to steal some tid bits from his kill (which looked to be a desert hare). I was elated! I never thought I would ever get to see a lion in the wild. I watched him somewhere around an hour or so before he decide enough was enough and he headed up and out of site never to be seen again. Although I know my chances are slim at getting another sighting like this, I know they are out there. Every once in a while when I go hiking, I will come across tracks.
I love living here and watching the native wildlife that abounds us.  ;D

Big Horn Sheep were fairly common above highway two up around the tunnels and the Sim Jarvey lookout. I'm not sure how the Curve Fire will effect their habits. I've found bear tracks - small ones - up above the Methodist camp at the top of Elm and seen bear run across the road in lower Lone Pine Canyon.

Actually I remember reading something a while back that they were going to do a prescribed burn to promote grazing land for the big horn sheep. Don't look like they'll need to do that now.

This Sunday September 22 around 1 in the afternoon I saw an extremely large bobcat lope leisurely across the road just east of the post office there.... East of the abbey.... Where is that anyway?  Valyermo?  He went across the road there and then into the green fields where he just took his time, walking head and shoulders above the greenery, heading south.  I have seen bobcats before but this one seemed to be HUGE.  Not worried about us at all.  It was a beautiful thing to see.

Thanks to the wild life lovers and their very interesting stories! I hadn't even considered bobcats... :o

On two separate occasions I've been lucky enough to spot Big Horn Sheep at the top of Mt. Baldy. In one instance, I saw four young ones together. Regal creatures.

Does anyone know of any Bald Eagles in the area? ;)

We have seen a bobcat crossing the road at the bottom of hwy 2 near 138, late at night.

When we first moved in, a very fat and sassy badger and our dog got into a growling match through the fence. If it weren't for the fence I think the badger would have gotten the better of our fairly tough dog. It was an impressive animal.

I haven't spotted one in this area yet although there are a few Golden Eagles around. Silverwood Lake area during certain times of the year you can spot Bald Eagles.

Actually, I have a number of critter tales. I'll start with the ravens. ( I am quite a Poe fan). ;D
We didn't have ravens up here until the great meat loaf heist of "98. It seems I cooked a four pound meatloaf badly in early November. It was kind of a huge sloppy joe. I threw it into a tupperware and shoved it into the back, bottom of the refrigerator. In December, I moved. I left the meatloaf in the old place. Finally, I fetched it. I threw it, tupperware and all ,into the trash. Bad move--real Tupperware is not cheap. I dumped the elderly, ripe meatloaf in the yard, and left the tupperware outside, full of water. The next morning I heard ravens FOR THE FIRST TIME IN WRIGHTWOOD. two of them had moved the four pound, ripe meatloaf a good 10 yards , into the street to pretend it was roadkill. Ravens have visited Wrightwood, ever since.

We saw a bobcat walk right through the Outdoor School at the Methodist Camp 2 weeks ago, strutting leisurely, not caring that about 50 excited 6th graders were following it!

I've seen lots of bear scat, had a bear get into our compost once and our trash once, seen bear tracks, but not a bear up close and personal.

Bighorn sheep are often up on the landslide--you can just see moving dots with dust getting kicked up from town.  I've seen tracks and scat of bighorns up on top of the slide.

Lots and lots of coyotes all the time, usually cruising the street looking for stray pets (slow rabbits...)  And lots of times in the woods just passing through on business.  Find lots of kitty skulls out in the woods--coyote leftovers, most likely.

Cute little grey foxes abound--one raids our compost and apple trees daily.

Raccoons--the ones around here seem to have bobbed tails!  Mostly seen on trash days...

Friends found a mountain lion skull near Jackson Lake, and I've seen tracks, but no actual lions, but I'm pretty sure they've seen me!

No skunks around here--too high and cold in winter.

Golden Eagles pretty frequently--no Bald Eagles as they are water birds (like to eat fish).

Lots of snakes--my favorites are the mountain king snakes, and they are fairly common, along with rattlesnakes.

Lots more, of course... I'll report any really exciting sightings here from now on!

On Bald Eagles.

The best place sort of near here for Eagle viewing is the East end of Big Bear Lake. They winter over there. They feed on Coots (Mud Hens) that freeze in the shallows.

My husband was driving down LPC raod early one a.m. and saw 2 condors.  We've seen bobcats, lots of coyotes of course, and raccoons.  There's a HUGE raccoon that roams Apple Ave.  Still looking for the buffalo that escaped on LPC.  I have heard of numerous mt. lion sightings but have yet to see one myself.  Love it here in WW with all the wildlife (human and otherwise)!
Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!

Condors??  More likely they were Turkey Vultures.  They are still cool and very large, but there aren't too many condors and they are all way north and east of here.  Still, I suppose it's possible...

I keep a look out for those bison, too!!  OMG, I would hate for someone to hit one --think about how folks (me, too) speed down that road --at night, or even in daylight, hitting a bison would be pretty much fatal.  The bison would probably swish his tail and think it got a bug bite.  Yikes!  Bison don't respect fences, either, so unless they spent a fortune on fencing, those bison are going to be out more often than not.  Another good reason to watch our speed and drive more carefully!

I just saw the cutest thing I think I've ever seen up here. I thought the chimpmunks were cute but this little guy took the cake.
A wood rat or aka the Pack Rat. He reminded me so much of a chinchilla and not some beady eyed rat that you would normaly think of.
If it wasn't for the fact that he was a wild creature, I think I would have kept him for a pet.  :)
Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: naturalist on Oct 26, 02, 12:11:05 PM
They ARE cute, aren't they?  Huge mickey mouse ears, large dark eyes, long whiskers, and even a slightly fluffy tail.  These rats are locals, not the naked-tailed Black or Norway Rats imported from Europe.  In fact, since they collect all kinds of interesting things in their nests, archaeologists and paleobotanists have been known to dissect old packrat nests to find out what was going on in the past--some of their nests can actually be thousands of years old!!
Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: naturalist on Oct 26, 02, 12:12:43 PM
Of course, I wouldn't encourage this for currently occupied nests or even old ones without special knowledge or equipment--there is an insect associated with packrat nests that carries Tularemia, and of course breathing dried rodent fecies is NEVER a good idea with things like Hanta Virus around.  But they are still cute!

Could be something of the weasel family which would include badgers, minks, ferrots, etc.

I'm sure "Naturalist" will know what kind of vermin romp around the Heath Creek canyon area.

Maybe someone lost an exotic pet? Maybe Sasquatch's favorite pet has gone missing? Maybe a Coatimundi?

Wow, WW. They might have to name a new unknown species after you.

Ringtail. You are very lucky to see one. Although common enough, they are nocturnal and very shy.

Guaranteed it wasn't a normal cat or raccoon.

I have noticed odd scat on the deck for a month or so
but not sure if it's related.

WW wrote: Any links on what their scat may look like?

No, but here are the tracks:
http://www.humboldt.net/~tracker/ringtail.html

Descriptions from Animal Tracks by Olaus J. Murie:

"The tracks are quite catlike and there is not a noticeable difference between front and hind tracks. This is one of the animals that have all five toes."

"The food is quite varied, and includes rodents, bats, insects and fruit. Consequently the scats vary. In Texas, where miscellaneous foods are eaten, the scats were often found broken up in short lengths, and crumbled easily when dry."

The picture show the scat being about 3 inches long.

It doesn't sound like the Ring Tail Cats are into peanuts or bird seed from the pages I've read so far but the small fountain is kept running with fresh water.

The scat I've been seeing varies in length and is about 1 1/2" to 2" long, about 1/4" diameter and tapered at both ends.

To Flatland Refugees:

You asked about bald eagles.  There is a substantial winter seasonal population at Lake Silverwood.  That's just about the closest.  If you head over to Lakes Gregory, Arrowhead and Big Bear you'll find more.  They like to feed on the fish and Coots found around and in the lakes.

That's way cool to see a Ring Tail (AKA Miners Cat, Civet Cat, Cacomistle)
About the scat: usually elongated and cylindrical, but with great variation in size and shape; in dry habitat, tends to crumble.
The name"Cacomistle" derives from tlacomiztli, which in the language of Mexico's Nahuatl Indians means "half mountain lion." Better mousers than house cats, Ringtails were once placed in frontier mines to control rodents; hence the name "Miner Cats."
They also go after juniper berries, hackberries mistletoe and persimmons, so carrion isn't the only food they eat.

WW wrote:"so far but the small fountain is kept running with fresh water"

This is an interesting observation because last year for the first time ringtails were seen regularly both at Eaton Canyon Nature Center and Monrovia Park. I think you might have made a good connection here between the continuing drought and the sighting of ringtails so close to human haunts.

WW also said: "The scat...[is]... about 1/4" diameter and tapered at both ends."

The picture in the Murie book shows the scat tapered at one end, while the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mammals describes it as, "usually elongated and cylindrical".

Ya know, it's funny we are talking about Ring tails as my neighbor has been telling me that he has been seeing squirrels running across my roof at night and I've been trying to tell him that squirrels aren't nocturnal but he keeps swearing that they are squirrels. I wonder if he's been actually seeing Miners Cats? Hmm....I think this calls for a late night sit out with my night vision scope to solve this mystery.

This ring tail cat likes the green astro turf for leaving it's deposits. I'll see about getting a infrared camera setup in the area to hopefully capture what appears to be a regular visitor.

(This is the same spot where the residential LiveCam is located and most of my close-up bird photography has taken place.)

Somehow I missed this whole thread on Ringtails--I was out of the picture for a while.  A co-worker and I saw a ringtail cat in a large pine right in the middle of the camp--next to the road and lots of buildings!  We saw it before Christmas, and I have seen these little guys before quite a bit, but never here in Wrightwood, so I would have known what it was right away.  How cool that we are seeing lots of them, and I think Pinescent, er, I mean, Birdsong has it right that it's the drought that's bringing them (and lots of other critters) in.  I mentioned we saw a bobcat strolling right through campus earlier this year, right?  8)

Do mice like birdseed?  DO THEY EVER!

I used to have an outdoor aviary and all these tunnels showed up on the floor of it.  The first good rain a lot of water pooled at the bottom of the aviary.... and went down the tunnels.

By the time I got home from work the bottom of the aviary was covered with these little pink maggoty looking things.... On closer inspection they were BABY MICE!!!

I was horrified.  I began to pick them up to dispose of them, presuming them to be drowned....

HOWEVER, as some of them warmed in my hand they began squirming, STILL ALIVE!  YEEGADZOOKS!!  About half were alive.

I could not bring myself to let them die so I put them in a jar by the oven to warm.... within an hour these little "pinkies" were bopping around in the jar....

The next morning they were like pink popcorn.... they could jump straight up and almost out of the jar!  And their eyes were still closed!  I dropped BIRDSEED into the jar and they picked it up with their little hands and ate it!

The next day they had early fur and their eyes opened!  I think the trauma they had undergone sped up their development processes.

Within two or three days they were well furred, jumping around and ready to go.....  So I put them back in my aviary!!!

Hmmmm....  Do mice eat birdseed.... YOU BETCHA THEY DO!!!

The next time I build an aviary I will put metal screen or net on the floor of it, hoping to prevent a repeat performance of that little nightmare!
Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: naturalist on Jan 22, 03, 06:29:55 PM
Hmmm, just add snakes...  pinkies, fuzzies, jumpies, all are snake treats!  but then they might eat the birds, too...at least the eggs.  I know the brown tree snakes they introduced to Hawaii eat bird eggs, but I've never heard of any local snakes doing that.  Anyway, I was just imagining the little food chain going in your aviary : )  Or get some bigger omnivorous birds--Jays would eat those baby mice!  But they would definitely eat other baby birds and/or eggs, too, so I guess you wouldn't want them in your aviary.  I'm just smiling picturing a jar full of jumping baby mice! :)

I have seen a Grey Fox for the second time in LPC. The first one was way down at the bottom, this one was  near the top. The car in front of me almost hit it, as it darted out into the road. I don't know what the normal range of a fox so I don't know know if this might be the same one or a diffrent one. Maybe Maggie can help out here.

I wouldn't think it was the same one, but I bet birdsong could come up with some great weblinks that tell us all about the natural history of grey foxes!  They are pretty small and fairly common--I've seen them a lot up here, so I would bet they are two different foxes.  In the fall, I saw one (this one I think was the same one) running through the outdoor school campus almost every evening with an apple in its mouth from one of the old trees there!  They are quite omnivorous.

Lots of coyotes.  Especially standing in the middle of the street and my front yard the other night howling.  We have seen 2 huge bears, (One on our neighbors porch) several deer and I have been very lucky to see the big horn sheep twice.  Once there were about 8-10 of them running down the middle of Hwy 2 (right before the tunnels about 20 miles from town) and another time 5 of them near the same place took off right up the side of the mountain.  They are amazing!

I was out walking my border collie this morning around 7ish.  She started sniffing kind of oddly and sure enough about 2 car lengths away from a  house on my street and there was a coyote. He was coming around the corner.  Yikes, fortunately we were almost in my yard so we hurried inside.  They are so bold, hungry and thirsty.  Everyone be aware they are out there even in the day time.  I'm not sure if my dog could take one on but her being a herding/protect the sheep dog, I think she would at least give it a go if need be.   I think I qualify as a sheep to her sometimes.  :)

tallgal, reports of coyotes in town during the daytime are not a rarity.

Another good reason to keep your fur babies on the leash.

We have friends who sadly lost their chihuahua to a coyote last Christmas. It and their Dalmatian was in the front yard with mom when a coyote showed himself in the bushes bordering the property. Both dogs took off after the coyote, which then grabbed the little guy and took off. To add to the horror of the memory was of course the audio that went with it. Very, very sad holiday season for them.

I really am sorry for the alpacas, but mountain lions are magnificent. And I still think coyotes are pretty even though they've accounted for a couple of my cats over the years. I miss my cats terribly... but it's hardly the coyotes' fault.

My daughter spotted the mountain lion on acorn.
He was walking in the middle of the road and the only thing that made him run into the woods was her car horn.
Be very very careful!
Our friends called animal control.
The lion is extremely large and on the prowl.

I'd like to know how they are handling the call about the mountain lion that ran into the forest...

CA Dept of Fish and Game is the correct agency to call.

Southern District Offices
3602 Inland Empire Boulevard, Suite B-130, Ontario, CA 91764
Public Information: (909) 484-0167

Let me clarify...

If you have a sighting of a Mtn Lion headed into the forest there is no reason to call. If the lion is suspected of killing livestock (alpacas) then calling CA DFG is appropriate.

Apparently there is a mountain lion around locally.
This happens every year.
The word to the wise is, "Watch your children and pets, especially at night, dawn, and dusk."
Cougars can easily jump high fences.
Call Fish and Game if you see one that seems to be a threat.
There are always mountain lions in the wilderness. They live here. There is no need to notify anyone about mountain lions in the wilderness, as opposed to mountain lions exhibiting threatening behavior in a residential neighborhood.
Mountain lions are seen in Wrightwood every year. And they can get into yards and carry off pets.
Caution - yes.
Panic - no.
This is life in the natural forest.

Mountain Lion sighting was repoted on Swallow Hill and Flume Canyon Roads on 5-16-2011 at approx. 6:00pm.  Several people witnessed the lion moving from Swarthout wash south up Flume Canyon road and disapearing into the forest.  This is near the water company land on the Los Angeles side of the village.  Please be aware of your surroundings if hiking in the forest.  It is very unusual to see a Mountain Lion in the day time especially prancing up the middle of a road broad daylight within the village.

Thank you for letting us know so that we can be properly prepared. I have lived here since 1980 and I have never seen a mountain lion in person.  My young adult children have had the feeling of being watched before while they were hiking.   I hadn't heard about the animal until the end of May when it was sighted near Acorn.  I wish that I had known that every year they are seen on Wrightwood's streets, especially while we were raising our children.

My daughter encountered a mountain lion on that JPL trail, which is the paved road many use across Mtn. High. It was about 3/4 mile in, around 2:30 p.m. yesterday. It was walking down a hillside just as she turned a bend in the road, she had a stare down with it. She said after about 30 seconds, it slowly turned away and she did too....walked back to the car and came and got me. Our walk was done!!

Mt. Lions are far more dangerous than Black Bears, unless it's a mama and her cubs. A protective mama could be very dangerous.

They are both beautiful animals and you're in pretty good shape if you don't turn your back on them.

I agree.  If you come upon a bear it is usually by surprise and they will run off.  An encounter with a Mtn. Lion probably means it was stalking or following you, they are hard to take by surprise.

They have really large territories so they tend not to stick in one place for very long.

Running with another person should be ok. Mt. Lions have been in this area longer than people. Just because we haven't seen them doesn't mean they haven't been here.  They are stealthy animals.

This is one reason we have dogs that we allow to run ahead of us.  If anyone has a close encounter with a mountain lion it will be my dogs, not my young children.

And I'd take a black bear encounter over a mountain lion any day.  Have had several enounters with black bears and they usually run right off with just a few claps.

I don't know that the dogs ahead of you would be the best thing. Keeping the "pack" together is better. But letting dogs off leash lets the dogs protect themselves and their pack. The numbers and the dogs' sense of smell are your best allies. (If your dogs know how to warn you.)
Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: ChrisLynnet on Jun 23, 11, 07:30:50 AM
1. You shouldn't be letting your dogs run without their leashes anyway on those trails.
2. When my dog (who is leashed) scents bear, he is OUT OF THERE. That's fine with me, I consider him my early warning system.
Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: lagomorphmom on Jun 23, 11, 09:24:50 AM
TopDog, you should examine your logic,

1) Your dogs will never 'surprise' a mountain lion 'up ahead' and chase them off. It will probably pick up the your party first and will either be interested in a meal or not be bothered.

2) Mountain lions stalk prey from behind, generally leaping up when close enough and biting/crushing the neck (do you remember the woman bicyclist who was killed in O.C.?). Depending on wind direction, the dogs may or may not pick up their scent if too far ahead. For the same reason, kids should not lag behind.

3) Offering your dogs as lunch instead of you and your kids may not work as planned - unless your dogs have been tested, you don't if they will be scared and simply run away.

4) Depending on where you hike, having dogs off-leash in steep areas offers the opportunity for them to fall off the trail down the side if they get too excited, ie "squirrel!!!!". Flawless call-back when the dog is offered excitement is important. We've had local search & rescue dogs fall over the side and they are well trained, so one can never assume.

Tom hits the nail on the head, a 'pack' that stays together is not the most attractive target.

Wow, look at all the commotion I caused.   :P

Yes, dogs provide excellent early warning signals - more to provide early warning to the wild animals than to signal early alerts to me.  Of course a mountain lion would know about us before we would know about it.  Our dogs make our pack bigger, more active, more alert, and less fun to attack.

As far as who has my back, well, that would be me.  I take the rear.  Kids are sandwiched.  Hopefully my dogs would come to my aid.  And hopefully our group is large enough to disuade even the most desperate mountain lion.  Our dogs are part of our family and do help provide protection, but the goal is not to have them eaten, the goal is to help make a lion think twice about approaching us.

BTW - my previous encounters with bears were at a previous home, in my yard, when my dogs were locked up. We've never encountered a bear on a trail with our dogs.

That's a great point Top Dog. Something as simple as dog tags jingling in the distance could be enough to warn the cat that people are coming and scare the cat away. That's actally why I keep my dog tags on my mt. bike when I ride alone.

Not to worry, sometimes written text doesn't say enough compared to a back and forth conversation, ie how exactly you all hike as a group.

I see I took 'ahead' to be perhaps too far away, but with only the short description, I would have felt remiss if I let it go with the chance you didn't know more about how they attack, we get folks new to the area all the time.

You are right about dogs signaling an early warning to predators. As for letting us know predators are out their, Toolman had a creepy hike one winter day. Took Buster (bullmastiff/boxer/? mix) and Lucy (boxer) on a hike over by Vincent gap (right and upper trail as you go away from town). Suddenly got near white out conditions with fog so he turned around and soon after the dogs 'alerted'. By that I mean, they had the cr@p scared out of them and I dunno how they did it, but they managed to walk forward as fast as they could with their heads pointed to the rear the whole way back to the parking lot. All's well that end's well.  ;D

The cougar holds the Guinness record for the animal with the highest number of names, presumably due to its wide distribution across North and South America. It has over 40 names in English alone.

The cougar (Puma concolor), also known as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount or panther, depending on the region, is a mammal of the family Felidae, native to the Americas.

Mountain Lion Safety Tips

Encounters with cougars are rare.  But if you live, work or recreate in cougar habitat, there are things you can do to enhance your safety and that of friends and family.
1.    When it comes to personal safety, always be aware of your surroundings, wherever you are; conduct yourself and attend to children and dependents accordingly.
2.    Landscape for safety. Remove vegetation that provides cover for cougars. Remove plants that attract wildlife (deer, raccoons, etc.). By attracting them you naturally attract their predator the cougar.
3.    Don't feed wildlife. Don't leave pet food outside. Both may attract cougars by attracting their natural prey.
4.    Keep pets secure. Roaming pets are easy prey for cougars.
5.    Confine and secure any livestock (especially at night) in pens, sheds, and barns.
6.    Don't approach a cougar. Most cougars want to avoid humans. Give a cougar the time and space to steer clear of you.
7.    Supervise children, especially outdoors between dusk and dawn. Educate them about cougars and other wildlife they might encounter.
8.    Always hike, backpack, and camp in wild areas with a companion.
9.    Never run past or from a cougar. This may trigger their instinct to chase. Make eye contact. Stand your ground. Pick up small children without, if possible, turning away or bending over.
10.    Never bend over or crouch down. Doing so causes humans to resemble four-legged prey animals. Crouching down or bending over also makes the neck and back of the head vulnerable.
11.    If you encounter a cougar, make yourself appear larger, more aggressive. Open your jacket, raise your arms, throw stones, branches, etc., without turning away. Wave raised arms slowly, and speak slowly, firmly, loudly to disrupt and discourage predatory behavior.
12.    Try to remain standing to protect head and neck and, if attacked, fight back with whatever is at hand (without turning your back) people have utilized rocks, jackets, garden tools, tree branches, and even bare hands to turn away cougars.

We had a bear as well at midnight Tuesday morning.    He was trying to get into our garbage can but it was strapped to a tree.   It  woke my husband who saw it out at the cans.   He opened and slammed the front door and the bear took off to get into our neighbor's can.   Evidence was left on their front lawn.

People who go out at night, please be aware of your surroundings.   My son came home minutes after the incident and witnessed the bear at our neighbor's trash.   Glad he didn't come home earlier to find it going through OUR can.

We are at Upper Oriole.    Not new here either from the previous claw marks on our cans.

Mountain lion killed in Conn. traced to S. Dakota

By STEPHEN DOCKERY
Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A mountain lion killed on a Connecticut highway last month had apparently walked halfway across the country from South Dakota, according to Connecticut environmental officials who said Tuesday that the journey of roughly 2,000 miles was one of the longest ever recorded for a land mammal.

The animal originated in the Black Hills region of South Dakota and was tracked by DNA from its hair and droppings as it passed through Minnesota and Wisconsin in 2009 and 2010, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Daniel Esty said at a news conference.

Biologists estimate the size of the mountain lion population at about 100,000 in North America, mostly living in western regions and seldom traveling more than 100 miles. It was the first confirmed wild mountain lion in Connecticut in more than 100 years.

"It is a testament to the adaptability of the species that it can travel so far from its original home in South Dakota to Connecticut," Esty said.

The lean, 140-pound male was killed June 11 when it was hit by a sport utility vehicle at night on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in the New Haven suburb of Milford.

Authorities initially believed it was a captive animal that escaped, but tests showed that it was not neutered or declawed and it had no implanted microchips, which are commonly used in domestic animals.

Tests also determined it was likely the same one that had been seen earlier in Greenwich, Conn., a New York City suburb 30 miles away. The death was followed by a flurry of big cat sightings in the suburbs of Connecticut, but experts dismissed most of them as unreliable. Government experts say no native mountain lions are believed to live in Connecticut.

Although it was an anomaly, Esty said the presence of the wild mountain lion is a good sign of the ability of Connecticut's conserved land to sustain wildlife.

He said the discovery is "a strong symbol of what we had all hoped for who work in the conservation area, that wilderness areas and biological diversity can be preserved and protected."

Genetic testing showed the cat had the same genetic structure of the mountain lion population in South Dakota's Black Hills region. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service Wildlife Genetics Laboratory in Missoula, Mont., matched the DNA with samples collected from a cat that was spotted in eastern Minnesota near Minneapolis and in northern Wisconsin from late 2009 through early 2010.

It was unclear what route the animal took to Connecticut. Biologists said it could have traveled south near urban areas or north through Canada.

Mountain lion spotted among parked cars in Burbank

Burbank police officers on Thursday reported seeing a mountain lion walking between parked cars near Kenneth Road and Brown Drive before it continued up Woodstock Lane and into the hillside, where it disappeared, the city reported Friday.

Mountain lion sightings aren't uncommon in the foothills and hillside areas in the heat of summer, when dry conditions drive some of the cats down into urban areas in search of food and water. They are typically skittish and avoid human contact, but city officials urged residents to keep pet food and water dishes indoors to cut down on temptation.

The mountain lion reportedly jumped an 8-foot high fence on Woodstock Lane before traveling into the brush and out of sight, according to the city.

Officials from California Department of Fish and Game issued several recommendations, including trimming brush, and keeping pets indoors at dawn, dusk at night when mountain lions are most active.

This message is for those of you walking in the Desert Front Rd. area, especially with small dogs.  This morning I watched a group of 3 coyotes stalking a woman and her dog as she was walking on Desert Front near the Sheep Creek Wash. I did yell at her and got her attention, but could not catch up to tell her what was going on.  These coyotes are bold and have very little fear of humans.  One of them snatched up my neighbor's dog last week then spit it out when someone driving by saw what was happening and honked their car horn at them.   Please be careful!

i don't think i have ever been so scared.  Talking to fish and game i think made it worst, these animals are amazing.  He said that the lion probably has been watching the patterns of when the dogs go out.  And then for it to get chased off and come back same spot and get another animal.  But like fish and game said if that lion would have wanted Jemma it would have taken her.  You can see where it had Jemma's head in it's mouth from the bites left on her head and face.  I got her with it's claw about a three inch gash about half inch deep.  Bite marks all over Jemma.  We will be heading out to the vet this morning.  I can't thank my neighbors enough for what I think was saving Jemma's life.  Just be so careful with your animals and your kids.  When it ran past me, I can't even tell you the fear I had.

The lion was between 150-175 lbs and a female.

A resident wounded the cat that had their 65lb dog in its mouth at the top of Acorn. The lion had attacked 3 large dogs last night all within a 3 hour period of time and all large dogs. (american bull dog, yellow lab and akita mix)

The lion was finally shot by the DFG.

It will be interesting to get the entire story.
Why and where the cat was shot & wounded.
What, when, and where Fish & Game and the Sheriff's Department became involved.
Etc.
It sounds like this cat was dangerously comfortable in the local community. That is unfortunate, but it happens.
I believe that the departments involved were considering the safety of the community, as well as not allowing a wounded animal to slowly suffer and die.
It would be nice if a taxidermist could preserve the cat for either the local museum or the Grassy Hollow Visitor's Center.

Not 300lbs, Not shot by a deputy.

Funny how stories get passed down the line....
Next we'll learn it was just a really big house cat with a bad attitude.  ::)  ;D

That's exactly why I contacted Fish & Game as a 300 lb lion would be an all time world record by almost 25 lbs. In Colorado the record is 220lbs and the largest mountain lion was 276 pounds caught in southern Utah.

Here's some more facts about mountain lions:

Another thing that DFG said was that the lion jumped a 6 foot dog run fence to get to the dog.

Good question.
It sounds like Monky6 was present when her dog was attacked and for it to come back/continue "hunting" seems pretty bold.

sorry for the mispost of 300lbs but that is what was told to me when i called today.  Jemma was the first attack and all i know is it was huge! just got back from the vet they are doing surgery on her tonight hope to get her back in the tomorrow .  She is tore up pretty bad.  I am thankful for all of the persons involved in taking care of such a threat to our families and our animals.  I know when I called 911 and they dispatched F&G out he gave me information that I was not aware of how strong these lions are I am just thankful Jemma got away, along with the other dogs, I wish she did not get hurt as bad as she did but we have our christmas present coming home hopefully tomorrow!

If it attacked so many dogs in so little time, it sounds like the animal was stressed, or has maybe young somewhere.  Kind of a bummer for all involved.

One morning last week my wife saw what she is pretty sure was a dead mountain lion cub in the middle of Lone Pine Canyon road near the intersection of Swarthout Road. She remembers it was a silver color with black markings and huge paws. It really upset her to see such a beautiful young animal's lifeless body just lying on the road. I kept waiting to see if anyone else was going to post anything on it. Now I am curious if it is related to the adult that was killed. We looked at a lot of pictures of cubs and this is the one she thinks looks most like the one she saw:

Just got back from the vet with Gemma. It took an hour and a half of surgury and 28 stitches to put her back together. There are many puncture wounds to keep clean but all in all she is very lucky and acts like nothing happened. The vet told us that she is very healthly and expects her to make a full recovery.

Thank you for all the kind words and prayers. Gemma will be around to say hello by the weekend, on a leash lol

Coyotes got one of my dogs a long time ago (our first night in WW cuz the co who put up our fence screwed up and he got thru a small part they did not secure) and he had many stitches as well, but Dr. Laura (at the time sewed him up)...

Our pets are our kids and I'm so relieved Gemma is ok....  Keep her close.  :)

Title: Re: Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my!
Post by: Surfer_Dude on Dec 15, 11, 08:48:38 PM
A ruler can be a small help as to the confirmation of the tracks belonging to  a mt. lions vs a dog or other animal.
However, feline identification comes from multiple aspects of the tracks because cats like dogs come in all sizes.  Check out this web site, it also contains a power-point on spotting the subtle differences between cat and dog tracks.
http://www.bear-tracker.com/caninevsfeline.html

If you can get quality close up shots of the tracks, where they went and their characteristics then they possibly could be properly identified.

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- Some residents in Burbank were in for a surprise when they discovered two mountain lion cubs in their neighborhood.

The animals were found hiding under a vehicle on Orange Grove Avenue.

Officials said the cubs were suffering from malnutrition.

The cubs were taken Tuesday to the Department of Fish and Game's Wildlife Station in Calabasas, where they were placed with another litter.

The facility tries to rehabilitate animals that belong in the wild but have been injured or orphaned.

I was wondering the same thing. SkierBob.. are you in town or up in a bit more remote area next to the forest in WW?

Here, our dog comes in for the night at dusk. Course, since the attack on your dog happened around 7:30pm.. that's about the same time. Jeff, our dog, is a big dog. He's part Shepard/Retriever.  I've just heard the coyotes in the distance at night here in P.H. I do think they'll start to wander down closer as the spring/summer has been so dry.

It wasn't WW.   It happen at my house on the ridge above Lake Palmdale.

The pup is doing lots better.  She's looking forward to getting the cone off her head I'm sure.  It's odd to see her so beat up but still happy as can be.

She found out the cone has it's good points.  She can place it over her dog bowl while eating and the other dog can't get at her food.

Ok, I do not know what it was I heard around 3am or so .. night before last here in P.H..  It sounded like a cat.. if it was a cat.. it was a really big cat with a very deep growl .. right behind the house somewhere. I do know cat growls (see kittens for adoption thread for reference.)  I did hear the coyotes up the hill a bit at the same time. I do not think this was a coyote. The neighbor's dogs were barking and after that growl.. there was total silence. My dog was in the house and didn't make a peep. I've just never heard that sort of growl before  .. very deep and quite loud.  I did get up and look about and saw nothing. If I do spot a mountain lion.. I figure I'll throw on my security bells and whistles to scare it off. I really don't want it around the horses .. if that is what it was. And, yes.. I have listened to the sounds of mountain lions... this was deeper. Perhaps feeling threatened.. I dunno. cheryl o7o

I did not realize how aggressive our mountain lions could be until one of the cats was clearly interested in my son! And my son is 11 years old! After talking to an employee, she told me how aggressive mountain lions could be and how the size of my son could make him easy prey. I would like to request any suggestions if we came across an aggressive cat of this nature while out hiking our local trails in Wrightwood.  Thank you

I'm sure you'll get a more in depth reply, but one thing I've read is that they often attack from the rear. Thus, children following parents make good targets. Dogs are also tempting targets to a big cat.

My leased horse lives in a stable in Phelan near the center of town. He was mauled by a mountain lion over the weekend. The vet thinks he will recover if there is no infection but his wounds are awful, that was one serious cat. The attack happened on broad daylight when the owners were out grocery shopping. Fish and Game knows and will hunt the cat, but who knows when they'll find it. The neighbors are freaked out because the horse is an adult 15 hands, not exactly small game.

It's very strange behavior for a mountain lion. They found two sets of prints; an adult size and cub size, so she may have been demonstrating to the cub or trying to feed it. It's sad, the cats are beautiful animals; but so is my horse!

No problem -- it's the block behind the small medical building where Walde's pharmacy is located. There are almost a dozen horses on the property. There were 2 Dobies on site; we don't know if their barking drove off the cat or if they were hiding! I sure don't blame them if they were. It was such a brazen attack, greatly out of character for a mtn. lion. Thank you for your good wishes.  :)

Thanks. I agree.. at least from what little I know about mountain lions.. out of character. I wonder if the horse somehow went after the cub? Probably just out of curiosity if so. Tho, we had a horse that would chase dogs. That location is a few miles from here.. but still too close for comfort. I will alert my friends here that have horses.

I hope they can track the cat.. they'll have to do it soon because we'll likely have rain today. Again, here's hoping for a full recovery for your horse.  With rain coming and the mud that follows .. it is not easy to keep wounds clean. best, cheryl o7o

I was thinking the same thing Free 2.. . But, maybe 'starving cub' isn't starving? And, when you look at the back of the bear as compared to the height of the doorknobs on that shed behind it.. this bear ain't that tall. .. even though it is in the foreground of the shots. So, it could be 'baby bear.'  It is pictured here on a small slope.. but somehow it seems to me like a young bear.. perhaps "Two Thumbs Up." I dunno..  best, cheryl o7o

I think I saw a bobcat in my back yard about 4:30 this afternoon.  The reason I say i think it was a bobcat is that I just couldn't believe it!  :o  I was in my dining room looking up something on the computer, and I have a large bay window that looks out onto the back deck.  Something caught the corner of my eye, and I looked right into the eyes of what could only have been a bobcat!  It had tufted ears, it stared at me for a few seconds, then I got up when it started to leave, and noticed it had a short tail.  It was bigger than a housecat, but not a huge animal.  It was quite beautiful, actually.  I just don't know how it got into my back yard, I have 6 ft. cedar fencing almost all the way around the back and side yards, and neighbors on all sides (except the front) are completely fenced.  I guess that wouldn't deter a cat.

This might explain why, on Saturday when I went out front to pick up the newspaper, my front door mat was absolutely covered with gray feathers.  No blood or guts, just a whole pile of feathers.  There were paw prints in the snow, that could very well have belonged to this cat.  Guess it enjoyed the comfort of my front porch to dispatch some poor, unfortunate bird.  :-\

Now I really wonder if I need to be extra cautious when I let my tiny dachshund out at night.  She thinks she's a rottweiler, but she only weighs 12 pounds.  I've read that bobcats are quite skittish.  But I do go out with her at night, and pray she'll find the "perfect spot" pretty quickly when it's this cold....

Forestgal.... If I were you I would either take Heidi out for a moment with you .. or ... let  her pee in the house for now.  It does sound like this bobcat or whatever.. is coming back to your place. And, I'm amazed about that. Seems like we're hearing more about the wild critters in WW this year and closer into town. So far, here in P.H... nothing other than what I reported a month or two ago.

And, yes.. they just leave feathers.. they even eat the feet and bones. They're tidy that way.... best, cheryl o7o

There's a stuffed mountain lion at the Barstow Courts.  You don't realize just how big they can get until you see them up close.  Perhaps some proactive Forest Service personnel can drop by the trigger happy Coyote people and give them some tips on how not to kill something.

On Sept 28, 2011 Jerry Brown signed SB769 approving museums and nonprofits to display dead mountain lions.  Interesting that it's being displayed there as   I do not believe the Barstow court falls under a museum or non profit.

well I just earned my a-hole status for the day.  I quick call to Cal-Tip and we're going to find out real quick if DFW thinks the court house is a museum or a nonprofit.   ;D

A quick search and I found chatter about it back in 2006.

It will be interesting to see what DFW take is on it.  I know of businesses that have had them displayed and DFW came in and took them.  I just couldnt' resist turning in a superior court to DFW.   There's one thing for sure DFW goes by the book.

Thanks Nolena!  I looked up bobcats and the National Geographic site as well as defenders.org has some great photos of them.  The bobcat fur and ears are beautiful.  The sites say bobcats prefer rabbits or hares for dinner - but also sometimes dine on rodents, birds, bats and in winter months adult deer.  They usually have one primary den in a rocky or cave area but also have auxiliary dens in wood piles and brushy areas.  At one time bobcats were legally protected and I think still are protected so they will not become extinct.

Thanks for explaining the "levels"!

I just noticed a few days ago, walking up the Heath Creek wash, that someone has goats now -- four of them at least.  I was wondering if that would attract mountain lions and was hoping not.  Reminded me of that scene in Jurassic Park where they leave the goat out for the t-rex.  Chum.

Location:  East of Green Road, about a half mile or so East on Maria Road, west of the Sheep Creek Wash.

This seems a bit early in the season to me for a cougar. They have a young foal which may have been the attraction.  cheryl o7o
