Does anyone know of any Bald Eagles in the area? ;)
Or could it have been a bandycoot (also very rare for these parts). My other guess might be a red panda! They have striped bushy tails too.Maybe someone lost an exotic pet? Maybe Sasquatch's favorite pet has gone missing? Are you sure it wasn't kind of weird cat?
Wow, WW. They might have to name a new unknown species after you.
Wrightwoodius Wakemeupis ;D
It doesn't sound like the Ring Tail Cats are into peanuts or bird seed from the pages I've read so far but the small fountain is kept running with fresh water.
The scat I've been seeing varies in length and is about 1 1/2" to 2" long, about 1/4" diameter and tapered at both ends.
Somehow I missed this whole thread on Ringtails
My daughter spotted the mountain lion on acorn.
He was walking in the middle of the road and the only thing that made him run into the woods was her car horn.
Be very very careful!
Our friends called animal control.
The lion is extremely large and on the prowl.
Mountain Lion sighting was repoted on Swallow Hill and Flume Canyon Roads on 5-16-2011 at approx. 6:00pm. Several people witnessed the lion moving from Swarthout wash south up Flume Canyon road and disapearing into the forest. This is near the water company land on the Los Angeles side of the village. Please be aware of your surroundings if hiking in the forest. It is very unusual to see a Mountain Lion in the day time especially prancing up the middle of a road broad daylight within the village.Thank you for letting us know so that we can be properly prepared. I have lived here since 1980 and I have never seen a mountain lion in person. My young adult children have had the feeling of being watched before while they were hiking. I hadn't heard about the animal until the end of May when it was sighted near Acorn. I wish that I had known that every year they are seen on Wrightwood's streets, especially while we were raising our children.
Oh my! On the whole I'd rather run into a mountain lion than a bear, but I think my life would have passed before my eyes. Wow.
Is the JPL road that everyone is referring to the little currently-closed road off of Table Mountain Rd labelled 4N21?
This is one reason we have dogs that we allow to run ahead of us. If anyone has a close encounter with a mountain lion it will be my dogs, not my young children.
And I'd take a black bear encounter over a mountain lion any day. Have had several enounters with black bears and they usually run right off with just a few claps.
Wow, look at all the commotion I caused. :P
Yes, dogs provide excellent early warning signals - more to provide early warning to the wild animals than to signal early alerts to me. Of course a mountain lion would know about us before we would know about it.
Wow, look at all the commotion I caused. :PNot to worry, sometimes written text doesn't say enough compared to a back and forth conversation, ie how exactly you all hike as a group.
Oh my goodness! You actually fought the mountain lion? About what time of day was this so I know when to watch out for my children. I let my kids play in the yard sometimes by themselves.
Just comfirmed they shot him last night 300 lbs
It sounds like this cat was dangerously comfortable in the local community.
Not 300lbs, Not shot by a deputy.
Funny how stories get passed down the line....
was the dog unattended at the time, or did the attack occur even when humans were present? (I'm curious how bold these cats are getting)
I have pictures can anyone help me post them?
One morning last week my wife saw what she is pretty sure was a dead mountain lion cub in the middle of Lone Pine Canyon road near the intersection of Swarthout Road. She remembers it was a silver color with black markings and huge paws. It really upset her to see such a beautiful young animal's lifeless body just lying on the road. I kept waiting to see if anyone else was going to post anything on it. Now I am curious if it is related to the adult that was killed. We looked at a lot of pictures of cubs and this is the one she thinks looks most like the one she saw:I saw this too on the way to work..I didn't have time to turn around and by the time I came back it was gone.

What area did this attack take place in Wrightwood ?
She found out the cone has it's good points. She can place it over her dog bowl while eating and the other dog can't get at her food.
Evidently the 2 Mtn. lion cubs are bigger now and has been hanging out around the community garden area.
Went and hiked out to Eaton Canyon Falls.. saw an animal I had never seen before! Did some research, found out it was a Ring-tailed Cat! Very cool! I was super excited! Very agile, running and jumping through the trees and along the canyon walls.
Just saw a good sized brown bobcat heading east on Lark at Mill Circle. Impressive. Thanks for posting this. That's pretty close to my house, and in spite of double, triple, and even quadruple fencing because of all my neighbors' fences, and my own, I saw a bobcat on my back deck a couple years ago. I'll take extra caution with my little dog this evening.

Dear Hubby and I saw a big Mountain Lion on the Jackson Flats hiking trail right around 4:00 pm, before the rain, yesterday!!
It wasn't far in front of us and it was carrying something dark and sort of big in it's mouth! OH my, we turned around and walked back to Grassy Hollow, where we were parked, and were done for the day :)

Were you intentionally trying to get the hiding Fawn to bolt and run? Trying to figure out why that seemed to be a good deal at the time.
Brilliant...Quite the outdoorsman
It's going to do a lot of running in it's life, it's a deerExcept that mom left him/her hiding there for the reason nature intended. Hopefully it didn't go too far and mom finds it again.
