The number of birds out today was surprising.
It rainined and snowed all day and didn't seem to stop them.
This is the first time I've been able to get pictures of the Dark-eyed Junco.

The Flickers have become regular visitors to the suet feeder.
They don't mess with the peanuts.

The Steller's Jay are always around, rain or shine.

At six inches in length, the White-breasted
Nuthatch is the largest nuthatch in North America.
(You can see the snow falling in the background)

This Flicker dug a hole in the snow to gain access to the suet feeder.
(No trick photography. The bird is in a big hole)

That was a great picture! But all your pictures are awesome as always, not to mention they look even better to me now that I got a new computer with a monitor that's not in the dark ages.

Spring is here with Humingbirds appearing.

Wow, what a great set of photos.. great job!
::)

Love that last one. Glad the bright light came in so you could freeze the humming bird. Birds don't like my house, I only get stray dogs and they aren't good for pictures. :-/ ;D
-
I just KNEW that little guy in my back yard was a junco!!! (Sorry, I'm new to Wrightwood and birding, and I still get excited over actually identifying something.) :)
-
My favorite Wrightwood bird remains the Scrub Jay.
During a Steller's Jay feeding frenzy this morning
a local Scrub Jay decided to join in.
With a little patience Scrub Jays will take peanuts from your hand.
Kids love it ;)

All the shots look so natural.

With their black color Raven's are very difficult to get a decent photo.

Another confrontation at the guzzler.
A female White-Headed Woodpecker was enjoying quiet time at the guzzler when two large Band-tailed Pigeons decided it was their turn.
The woodpecker reluctantly moved out of the way.

John,
Mrs. HB is bugging me right now to ask you what the focal length of the lens you are using with these great photos.
Thanks.

Which specific photo(s) ?
Just curious with the flicker, hawk and other close-ups, what's the longest focal length that you use?
-
WW those pictures are so pretty the next time someone gives me the bird I'll have to take it as a compliment

Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? I have never seen this kind in all the years I have been up here. Sorry it is not too sharp, but the light was low and he would not let me get close enough for the flash to be effective. It is hard to tell, but his beak is curved.

It's a beautiful bird! Totally cool!
-
I think it may be a Pine Grosbeak.

I can't tell....Let me find my glasses and maybe I'll be able to make it out. ;D JK
Is it possible that it is a baby Robin?

Thanks Goldie, but I don't think it is a grosbeak because those have a blunt beak.
The closet match I could find is a Red Crossbill, but I am not certain.
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i5210id.html
mr hillbilly you might want to take a few more sips of moonshine and it might come into focus for you. ;)
-
Maybe a house finch? They're colors get brighter this time of year.
-
BobstonBob - I thought it may be a red crossbill also, but could not tell in the picture if the bill actually crossed.
If you zoom in on this picture, you can see how the bill crosses:
http://birds.cornell.edu/programs/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Red_Crossbill.html.
They are both in the finch family, so my guess it would be one of the two, depending on the bill.
I'm no expert, just find it fun to try to identify these beautiful creatures - but, maybe we can wait a little longer for mrhillbilly to come into focus :)
-
I agree Goldie, the bill does cross, so I am pretty sure it is a red crossbill. Here is another picture that shows that his beak does cross. Again I apologize for the quality of the picture, but he would not cooperate nor even open his eyes on this one :(:

Great pictures.
-
-
Yep, that's a crossbill. The use their bill like a pair of pliers to open pine cones and get the seeds out. As they open up the cone, they can stick their tongue in there and grab the seed. Too kewl!
-
I've been trying to get a picture of male/female Acorn Woodpeckers side by side and finally got it. The crown coloring is distinctively different between the two.

Great shot WW., isn't it funny how we want a certain shot and we wait and wait and finally get it......
-
Great shot, Wrightwood. In a month or so, expect to see them raising a family in the Woodpecker Condo.
-
Ok, I don't have a picture but maybe one of you can put one on here once someone can tell me what this bird is. Today I was walking out to get in my truck and this bird that is a little bigger than a finch landed about 5 feet from me and just sat there and looked at me. It had black and yellow speckled wings with a yellow breast and light orange face and head. It was so pretty. At first I thought it was out of it's realm, that it didn't belong around here. But just a little while ago I saw a few more out in my back yard.

Cinchy, did it look like the last post on this page?
