Here's Wrightwood as a town/village:

I live here and I probably spell it wrong! "Pinion Mesa" every time. It's probably correct on the sign, "Pinon Mesa." I'm an excellent speller too, I just have Pinion on the brain.

I knew that :P

In Spanish, the "n" with the tilda "~" over it designates an "ny" sound. So the other spellings are Anglicized gringo versions of the original Mexican word.
-
That works for me.
But, is the Spanish also corrupted from the native American?
-
I confuse it with the spelling as in "a bird's pinion."
From now on, I vow to remember how to spell the darned thing correctly.
-
So what is Pinon Mesa? I pass the sign all the time and can't tell what it represents.
-
It's the neighborhood on top of the flat-topped hill (a mesa) that you pass as you head out of town on Lone Pine Canyon. It's comprised of two streets, Summit and Easter.
If you're coming up Highway 2 towards Wrightwood and look to the left before you reach Sheep Creek, you can see the entire hill from there and the houses peeking out from the trees.

It was an early attempt at real estate marketing which gave exclusivity to the buyer through a place name. Kinda like Pacific Crest Estates. "We live over in PC".

I just can't get what you guys call mesa's out here. Pinon Mesa, Baldy Mesa, the mesa in Hesperia. Don't the people out here know what a real mesa is? The ones they have in... uh oh, is it Arizona or New Mexico?
