at the bottom of the 330...just above the city creek ranger station....is a dirt road off to the right....Unfortunately this hideaway gets used for dumping...and god knows what else...but the sage is thriving.....I'm going out again tomorrow and can take a picture of the entrance..

Steve, this may have been asked before but what kind of lens are you using, a macro?  That last shot was beautimous!!!
Title: Re: Wildflowers explosion
Post by: firefightersteve on Apr 11, 06, 05:23:48 PM
Wish I could give you an easy answer....actually...I found an extension tube/ adapter....and a adapter ring kit...on ebay...after that....it was all about playing with different lenses that I could screw on the end of my extension tube....I've got quite a pile of old lenses....and my girls love taking them apart....Most of my experiments have ended up in a pile of stuff for the trash can....but I finally found a lense that lets me get up real close!...and it actually let's in enough light for a decent depth of field......well...that's my long answer to a short question....

You really need to write to your camera's manufacturer....I don't think they designed it to do all the things you do with it.  Amazing and fun to watch.

No flower expert but do not think it's a wild flower and looks it like the crocus coming up in our yard.  Does the writing on the side have anything to do with what kind of flower it is?

No Eliza you don't have to do it if you don't want too..  I have a website where I sell my photos so it is a habit.  It is a copyright mark which says that the photo is mine and therefore it is illegal to copy or use without my permission.  As I take pics and post them on my website , enter some into contests I put my copyright on them.  You may notice that when Wrightwood posts a pic he always puts the websites name on the bottom..  It is a way to protect our work.

Please don't feel silly.

Thanks Flower for the name of this flower!!!

Beautiful photo, ffsteve - I love that color, and it's hard to believe that the flower is that tiny!

OK, maybe this question doesn't belong here, but I have a really incredible wildflower picture that someone sent me in an e-mail last year, and I saved it in "My Photos" (I was so proud of myself that I figured out how to do that!).  How would I post that here?  I haven't figured out photobucket, if I can learn that, is there a way to transfer the picture into that, then post it?  Real computer dolt here....

The blooming is finishing in this area, however, many more plants continue to bloom at the middle elevations...

You mean this year, now?  I see them up in the forest, out of Grassy Hollow, much later in the spring/summer.  Love them, they are so cheerful!

BTW, I have one of your incredible daffodil pictures on my desktop right now, from over in Running Springs.  One of these years I'm going to have to get myself over there to see them firsthand.

Simple mustard.  "Black Mustard" and surprisingly not indiginous to California.  Black mustard was introduced from Europe.  Most sources credit the Spaniards as introducing mustard to California.  The condiment is made from the seeds remaining after the bloom.

Not the best flower photo, but I am facinated by this plant.  My reference, "Flowering Plants", by the Native Plant Society, describes Windmill Pink as growing in weedy and disturbed soils.  That's exactly where I found this plant, growing on an old mud slide.  Remember the mud slides from two years ago?  This plant was very small and I've seen it nowhere else. I was lucky to catch this one when I did. The location is now closed by the Forest Service to protect the breeding grounds of a frog which I believe is  the "Forest Frog".  I think that's it's name. Please correct me if I'm wrong.  I spent some time in the City Creek Drainage during the month of April, before the closure, and got many photos of the frogs as well.

Windmill Pink, Silene gallica
Caryophyllaceae

What a unique plant.  They are loaded with spines.  I had to shake the one I photgraphed to get all the insects off and was introduced to the sharpness of the spines.

The pedals of the bloom decompose in the position they lay, which is usually just below the bloom, on a spiney portion of the plant.

The bloom of the Spiney Poppy is nearly identical to that of the Matilija Poppy, however, the body is entirely different.

That is a cool flower, it looks like someone rolled it up in their hands.

Which flower is a lupine that I shot....  I guess I'm going to have to get a book.

Thanks,

I ended staying at home as that was the wkd of the prescribed burn.  Didn't feel safe going that far from home.

You take 5 shots and then merge them together.  The software does it..  You just have to not move much when taking them...

Thanks!

I like the dusty look in your sunflowers...I'm not sure what the proper photographic  term for this is...It's not so much a decrease int he contrast as it is a slight desaturation.  It softens the image..I think we get carried away with vivid colors sometimes..

Twining Snapdragon, Antirrhinum .........
Acrophulariaceae

This is the closest identification I can find.  The tiny bloom I found has slight variations from the one in my reference, although, I'm sure it's in the same genus.  It's definately an Antirrhinum, but it's not a kelloggii. I'm learning that plant species are in a constant state of flux, with many adaptations in a given species.  My references are getting thicker and thicker!  So much to learn, but I love it.

The dusty look might be due to the side lighting when I took them.  The sun was facing them and I took the shot from the side.  The shadows were nice at that time....

Thanks for the comment.

Does anyone know if it is illegal to dig up a plant from along side the road and plant elsewhere?  i.e, sage, lupine, the scarlet one???  I don't think they are protected plants but just want to make sure.  I have an area that I want some ground cover and the lupine would be great as it grows in round patches...

I've had a difficult time photographing these yuccas.  It's difficult to capture the brightness of these candles, more like torches, without losing an acceptable contrast and color balance. Your darkest brights cannot be brighter than your brightest dark, if you want the photo to be believable. I learned that from my sister in law, who understands these things better than me.

Steve,

Where did you find the blue larkspur?  I like the perspective you took for the sunflower.  I'm guessing this position would only be allowed by agency people because we would be run off by CHP, right?

I love it when I see people loving photography and sharing it.  Thanks!
Hi Chuck...the Blue Larkspur are from the San Bernardino's....around our place....I'd like to try and catch those sunflowers at the 215/15 split at sunset....As far as the inter agency issue is concerned, asking for forgiveness is much easier than asking for permission.....Either way, I'm extreeeeemly careful on the freeway....

Publishing a book.....
That's something to shoot for.
I'd be interested in a work that showcased the Wrightwoodcalif amature photographers...if it had the right twist.

There are zillions of publishers and photographers peddling flashy computer edited images...
They're all over the internet and the bargain book racks at Barnes and Nobles..
It's easy to make a photograph look pretty with software and computers.
It's more difficult
to tell a story...
With accuracy, depth, and poignant photography.

What would be the Wrightwoodcalif story?

For one thing,
I sincerely appreciate the common good will expressed in this forum...
And the opportunity to present work for this groups consideration.

FFSteve, you take pics like I do! (you do a lot better though)

For instance, when I take pics of bikes at the Laughlin Harley Run, I start out from maybe 4 or 5 yards away for an overview while circling the bike, after that, it's in close for the details!
Am i right?

You guys totally ROCK!

The Mariposa Lily is beyond beautiful! It reminds me of when glassblowers will add different colors to the globe or vase, and as the glass is blown, the colored spots elongate. I think they call it carnival glass, did I get that right?

Great shots. As an added attraction, the Mariposa Lily has my football teams' colors...Washington Redskins! Burgundy & Gold!!

P.S.
Also, the White Sage looks as delicate as a cloud. Nice job. Keep 'em comin'

Hi Laughlinguy...
I do like to take in a scene from a distance...
It takes some time for the patterns to come out...
It's like looking at one of those 3d pictures....that you can't see at first..but then the image jumps out as you let you eyes go out of focus...

Those bike photos you submitted were wild...

Thanks for the feedback...

Firefightersteve, you are really finding art in these simple things that grow around us.  It is facinating to see the progression you have made in the last year.  Your new camera has really helped but you have to have the eye.  Keep finding these jewels that sway in the wind.  They are simply stunning!

Hi Forestgal,
Thanks so much for your compliments and your absolutely right...
A mistake on my part..
I got the latin right but mixed up the common name.
That lilly is a "Humboldt Lilly"...not a Mariposa.
Thanks for the correction...

You're welcome, ffsteve.  I wasn't trying to correct, only to try to figure out what I'm trying to learn.  I just got this wildflower book last year in an attempt to ID some of the flowers I see on my hikes up here.

Please keep posting your wonderful pics!!

Hi Forestgal,
I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the local fauna and appreciate your input.
I don't mind being corrected.
Accuracy does count.
Please mention any of my snafoos in naming these flowers.

This is a true Wrightwood flower from hwy 2:
Blue Flax, linum lewissi
Couldn't find this one in my books, but found it on line.

Hi Forestgal, I was working in Lake Arrowhead yesterday and these grow behind station 92, lots of them...
I'm sure there are some in Wrightwood at higher elevation, mixed in with grass.  They're a common wildflower, however, they don't stand out and are easily missed.
Best wishes, Steve

Red Bush Monkey Flower, Mimulus puniceus
These flowers jumped out at me while driving in Ventura County. At first it looked like a "Sticky Monkey Flower", but the plant body was diferent. It was growing in some sand dunes near Oxnard Shores.  We have many different types of Monkey Flower in our mountains.

The wildflower explosion continues, although I'm seeing more and more seed pods. My wife and I came home to find milk thistle seed pods floating around our living room. Several blooms had released their pods while we were out. They float into the air with the slightest breeze and it was interesting chasing them around with my vaccuum cleaner. The seed is less than 1mm in length.

Incredible photos of wildflowers!  How do you get such remarkable detail?
Title: Re: Wildflowers explosion
Post by: firefightersteve on Jul 08, 06, 08:46:58 PM
Thanks Wildman...

One advantage to simple equipment is that it forces me to improvise.

On the detail....
I use a tripod, slow shutter speeds, and maximum depth of field focus.

Focus is critical and for macro work I prefer using the LCD display.

My little camera shows green squares on the focus preview so I know what the camera has selected.  I bounce around on focus modes i.e. center spot, center average, or multi point.

Then I cross my fingers and take 100 pictures...

The point is (I'm assuming) that there is horrible people out there who may try to steal photos and claim them as there own.   >:(  Watermarks pretty much prevent that.

Love these photos.

What i don't understand is why large photo credits go through the middle of some pictures. What's the point?

I am in quite a few photo forums and I have had a few shots stolen and use on other sites that is why the watermark is across them.  I typically don't use the big watermarks here as I trust most everyone but these were copied from my other group.

The photo still shows thru though :).....

Thanks,
