The Wrightwood Disaster Preparedness Team recently registered with FEMA and obtained authorization to commence CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training in Wrightwood. The first CERT training, 18 hours over 3 consecutive Saturdays, will start Saturday July 8. The three day class is a very comprehensive program focusing on various aspects of disaster preparedness and citizen relief efforts.
In a recent special on KTLA, regarding surviving a disaster, several fire officials repeated the message that no matter how good the plan is for the professional first responders, they most likely will be overwhelmed by a major disaster. The solution is a trained community response by our citizens. A geologist who spoke during the show stated that the Northridge earthquake lasted seven seconds while the expected quake on the San Andreas may last up to two minutes. If that prediction holds true, the devastation could be worse than anything this country has ever experienced. The program kept reiterating the message to get prepared now. Begin your preparations at home. Next, organize your block and your entire community to be ready, as responders, offering trained support to the professional first responders.
The Wrightwood Disaster Preparedness Team plans to have about 300 local citizens go through CERT training. Phil Vondra is looking for volunteers in Phelan and Pinon Hills to join the Snowline Disaster Preparedness Team so CERT training can be offered in Phelan and Pinon Hills. For more information, please call Phil Vondra at 868-4346 ext. 111 or Kim Floyd at 249-5385

Wrightwood is fortunate to have an instructor who is a local and has made a career out of this type of training:
-
The curriculum consists of an introduction to Disaster Medical Operations, Fire Safety and Basic Fire Extinguishment, Search and Rescue, Building Assessment and Damage Size-up, Basic Incident Command System, Disaster Psychology.
After completing the CERT program, you will be armed with the knowledge to allow you to help yourself, your family, your school, church, business and your community.
-
What will be the fee for these classes? I am really interested. Where there be any training for handling and helping animals as well?
-
Don't believe CERT training covers any great detail about working with animals. It's geared to helping humans. Animal Control might have an annual class on that subject.
-
I don't know about San Bernardino county but LA County offers a CERT for animals. If you do all of the training, you can become a volunteer for LA County Animal Care and Control. They have a special unit--LAC-DAC-ERT--LA County Animal Control Equine Rescue Team or something like that for people who are certified to work with horses in an emergency. I've seen their volunteers in dark green jumpsuits with yellow lettering that assist LA County animal control during large fires, etc. I know that a bunch of people in the more rural areas of LA County like Leona Valley and Green Valley have been taking some of this training.
They interface very well with the LA County Fire Department. Why don't you see if San Bernardino County has something similar.
One of the reasons that Katrina was such a mess was people didn't want to leave their animals behind. Hurricane Rita was much less devistating because people were encouraged to evacuate WITH their animals. Plus, they had such a huge wake up call from Katrina and took the orders to evacuate seriously. In the whole mess about FEMA, one of the recommendations from the panel is to make sure that there are plans for animal evacuations as well as for people.
-
I will do that. I am interested in both.
There does need to be a plan for animals. I know to some people they are just animals but to alot they are their companions, their children, their family.
I would NOT leave without my animals.... It's not an option....
-
K9lvr has a very good point. One of the major issues that was not addressed before hand was folks bringing their pets to the shelters during the Cedar,Grand Prix and Old fires. It is now part of the planning process.
Something to remember is that pets are not allowed at the human evacuation shelters. They will be kept at shelters at places like the fairgrounds that are run by animal control folks and volunteers that have been through the program she mentioned. Another option is staying at hotels/motels that allow small pets.

The three day class is a very comprehensive program focusing on various aspects of disaster preparedness and citizen relief efforts. Wow--looks like some pretty realistic training. I'm impressed! :2thumbsup:
-
Wow - I didn't even get the fake but realistic wounds when I was in school to become an EMT. That's great!
Congratulations to everyone who passed! :2thumbsup:
-
I wasn't available for the dates this summer, so please keep us posted on the fall dates.
-
I would like updated info too, if you are looking for people in Phelan. My husband is a retired police officer, and I am an RN...so we would love to be part of this since we know it is only a matter of time :(.....
-
The most recent issue of the WW Property Owners Association had the dates of October 7, 14, and 21 for CERT training. (I hope I have the correct dates!)
Of course I already recycled the newsletter, and can't remember the contact names, but I know one was Phil Vondra at his Phelan office. Maybe the WW Fire Departmant as well?
The info in the newsletter said that the goal is to have about 300 folks in WW trained in CERT techniques. I won't be able to make these training sessions either, but hope to catch the next session.
Peace
-
I definitely want to participate in this. Where do I sign up?
-
Yes the dates for the next CERT Training is October 7, 14, and 21 (9am - 4pm) In the Wrightwood Community Center - The training is FREE!
Call Phil Vondra at 868-4346 ext. 111 or Kim Floyd at 249-5385
-
i went through CERT training with the LAFD in Studio City in January, and judging from the photos your training was better! it was great of them to actually show people how to turn off the gas rather than trying to describe it.
all in all, it was a great (and FREE) training, even though i hope we never need to use it.
-
To reserve a seat for Oct. 7, 14 & 21 session, please contact Jack Jacobs at 249-5124. He is our coordinator for this event and contacting him will streamline the process. Space is limited, so please register early. Remember to tell your friends and family about this event. :flagwave:

me 2!!

So am I.
-
I hope to meet many of you at CERT training tomorrow!
-
I have a problem. I have a memorial for a very dear woman tomorrow. It was at 4pm and now it has been moved to 12:30pm....
I guess I have to do the next one, unless I can make up just the first day?
Can anyone tell me if I can do this? Complete days 2 and 3 and do the first day over?
Thanks,
D
-
Angelwolf, I sent you an email with a phone number to call.
-
Yes you can make up a day in the next round.
Get the training days in while you can as you never know when it will be needed. I know of a person that went through the first round of training and used his experiences in a serious rollover car accident he came upon.
-
i thot i read in the Montaineer Progress that this program has been postponed yes no too much tea for me?
-
I got an email confirming that it's going to take place tomorrow.
i thot i read in the Montaineer Progress that this program has been postponed yes no too much tea for me?
-
already threw it out wonder what i read to think that
-
The CERT program WILL START Oct 7, 2006.
-
sorry i caused confusion on this did not mean to CERT is a wonderful thing for our town
-
How did the training go? I would have much rather been there. :(
-
The first class went well and they handled the classroom disasters - lack of sound on the presentation tape and an instructor with car problems. They went over a lot of good information. Anglewofl, you'll get the hands-on training, so make sure to show up for the remaining classes! It looks like it will be a good class.
One thing for sure, we will need more CERT trained people in Wrightwood so that we'll be prepared to handle whatever disaster falls upon us. I hope to see many more people participate in the training in the future.
-
I was disappointed by the lack of forum members that attended.
There is a lot of good informations to be learned. Things we all should know, even if the "Big One" doesn't happen in our lifetime.
-
How many are in this latest CERT class?
-
I didn't count but I would guess maybe 25 or 30. Cathy did you happen to count or want to guess?
-
I was disappointed by the lack of forum members that attended.
I had to work, but the lady snake was there. Says she'll be getting one of those green helmets and vests. I sure do love women in uniform. ;)
Supposedly she's supposed to patrol our block with another CERT volunteer if disaster strikes. Is there a registry of where all the volunteers live? I'm not sure who the other volunteers on our block are. Might be good for people to know who to call on for quick help in an emergency.
-
Tell her to introduce herself. I'm the only one there from Phelan.
ChattyCathy made sure everyone knew we weren't related. ;D If that helps her find us.
-
Now Ken, we sat together, we went to lunch in your car together, and we both have the same last name! I figured everyone would assume that we were married - and since you have a wife, I wanted to set things straight!
My guess would be 30 people. I would have liked to have seen more forum members, and also more younger people. I doubt that there was anyone under 30 present.

-
You could have atleast told them we were 45th cousins, which we may well be.LOL
-
So Ken, have you done your homework yet? I haven't.
-
I was going to do it tonight, but - do you remember when I talked to Phil Vondra about getting something going in Phelan? Well, I got a call this afternoon from the lady that's heading up the Phelan/Pinon Hills Disaster Preparedness Team and their meeting was tonight. So, no I haven't done it yet. :(
But how was that for an excuse? ;D
-
If you were unable to come to last Saturday's class, you can join us the next 2 Saturdays and make-up the class you miss the next time the CERT Training is offered.
The class is the next 2 Saturdays, 9am to 4pm at the WW Community Center.
It would be nice to see a large number of Forum members attending.
-
I have my CERT certificate and I am much better prepared in case of a disaster. CERT teaches you to be prepared in your own household and to be ready to help your neighbors and community. As far as I know, there are around 80 CERT-trained community members in Wrightwood - but that won't be near enough to cover WW if there is a disaster.
I implore all of you to take the course the next time it is offered. The skills you learn can be used in your everyday life and could even save a life - maybe your own family members! This training is invaluable and is free! For those of you who already have medical training/first aid training, it is much more than that. People are needed of all walks of life. I'd also like to see more young people take the course.
-
You can bet I'll be keepin' my eyes peeled for the next CERT class.
-
I'd love to take the class, but I'll probably have to retire first. I have to work too many weekends.... Is there any chance the class could be offered on weekdays? If I knew long enuf in advance (3 or 4 months), I could possibly request the days off.

Yes, I talked to Phil on Saturday and they are trying to arrange to have a CERT class during the week, besides another one on weekends.
-
I wish they would have one specifically designed for kids.
-
Chatty-
Do you actually have your certificate in hand, or do you mean you passed the training?
-
We got certificates and passed the training.... The last day was physically grueling. :)
-
Do the certificates have your pictures on them?
-
The certificate is an 8x10. We will be getting id's with picutes in the mail....
-
I would like to take the class, but haven't been able to work it with my schedule. Does anyone know when the next class is being offered?
-
Interesting as the 1st class hasn't received their certificates yet.
The next date has not yet been announced but I'll see if I can get the information.
-
Do the certificates have your pictures on them?
I think we got gypped gus, we didn't get any certificates in the first class. :-\
I talked to the guy from the CERT organization on Saturday and he said our ID cards with our pictures on them were delayed because they were being redesigned. He said they were making all the cards standard with only a decal of the area of the CERT training the only difference in them. He said that this was for the CHP in case of any roadblocks, they would immediately be able to identify the CERT cards. He also said that they had just received a new printer to make up these photo ID cards, they looked great and we would probably be receiving them in the not so distant future.
-
so Bob what did you do with all those pics?
-
How old does a young person have to be to take this class?
-
so Bob what did you do with all those pics?
Sorry, I am not at liberty to say. If I told you, I would have to kill you. ;)
-
BB,
yep we got gypped for sure
-
Will you be posting them, or are all those pics you took of me 8x10's on your walls now? *giggle*
-
I'm in no hurry to see MY picture, as I'm not photogenic like you are, Angelwolf!
-
It's a lot of info to handle for kids. It would have to be toned way down. Part of the program deals with preparing your household for an emergency and preparing a plan with your family, so YOU would be passing your knowledge on to the kids.
I wish they would have one specifically designed for kids.
-
KW, you need to prioritize this high on your list - this is a must for everyone. Once we get a few more classes trained, I would like to see refresher courses. A lot of it is common knowledge, but I certainly learned a lot and feel that I would have a direction if there was an emergency and I would not be running around like a chicken with my head cut off (what a weird saying!).
My daughter is planning on taking it next time it comes around. She's an EMT and is going to be part of the County of San Bernardino Search & Rescue soon, but I need her on the same page that I'm on since she will be invaluable in an emergency.
I would like to take the class, but haven't been able to work it with my schedule. Does anyone know when the next class is being offered?
-
They can call it CERT jr. Make it just one day. Give some good info like shutting off gas, collecting neighborhood pets ect. Defining roles is important.
-
KW, you need to prioritize this high on your list - this is a must for everyone.
I took the one-day course a while back, and just need to find three Saturdays that fit with the up coming schedule. My husband wants to take it too, and my 15 year old son if possible.
I have a feeling that Wrightwood will be one of the most prepared communities around, with all the interest in these classes. (per capita)
-
The course in general is OK for most everyone, except it contains some very graphic photos. They're no worst than images seen on some TV shows but these are real.
If I personally had a child under 16 who wanted to attend, I would think long and hard before allowing them to do so.
-
There was a very bad accident around the corner from my house. They didn't use sirens when they arrived so I wasn't aware of it until I went to the store. The didn't need help but it was quite the learning experiance.
One thing they failed to tell us in class is, these situations come with sound effects. The victim had a badly broken femur and was writhing in pain. Not a fun experiance.

Interesting as the 1st class hasn't received their certificates yet.
The next date has not yet been announced but I'll see if I can get the information.
That would be great - right now my schedule is posted through the end of January, so the sooner I can know dates to request off, the better for me. Yikes, do I need to win the lottery or what!!!
-
Have any of you who took the CERT training in October received your ID cards?
-
No.
Last word I heard was that it wouldn't be until spring.
-
I got a copy of my Completed Disaster Service Worker (DSW) registration and oath forms in the mail today from the County Fire Dept.
I'll be manning a spot in front of Mt. Hardware tomorrow for those last-minute shoppers to purchase disaster kits! What a thoughtful gift this would make! The sale is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TOOLS MAKE GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
Are you stumped for ideas for Christmas presents this year? Tired of fighting crowds at the mall or giving the same old doodads that are quickly forgotten? Getting prepared for a disaster is a message that never gets old or outdated, and giving gifts of tools or emergency kits is the ultimate way to show your family that you really care. For example, the Wrightwood Disaster Preparedness Team (WDPT) has assembled an Emergency Survival Kit for the home or auto that contains really useful items like an emergency blanket, food and water, a flashlight, and medical supplies, all designed to sustain an individual for three days. The WDPT will be selling these kits, which retail for $25.00, in front of Mountain Hardware in Wrightwood on the Saturday of December 23 from 10AM to 1PM. More information can be obtained from Kim Floyd 249-5385, or Jack Jacobs at 249-5124. It could be vitally important that you learn to TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY BECAUSE THERE MAY BE NO ONE AVAILABLE TO HELP!
