Did anyone else see the Ch 4 news at 6 tonight? They did a story on a person selling horses in Wrightwood and the reporter said that the horses were mis-represented, sick, lame, etc. Some of the people interviewed in the story said that they were out thousands of dollars. Has anyone else heard about this??? Maybe it will be repeated on the 11o'clock broadcast.

My thoughts are with the people who are victims of these flakes.
I hike by this place a lot and don't think they have horses there any longer - amazing that they scammed so many people all over the place.

Sounds like she is galavanting all across the country posting from different cities. That's depicable selling lame horses and taking money from 3 different buyers for the same horse. The horse world is furious at her. One of the posts in a forum said there may be up to 35 victims.

She is probably just "skip" posting. I won't use the real name for it so people don't google how to do it, but she is probably still in WW.
IP adresses are easy to manipulate. It is a shame that she mistreats those horses, makes you want to go take them from her.

You know, my hubby and I had to go on to that property (with permission) a few Thanksgivings ago as a Golden Retriever had decided to spend the weekend at our home. He had an ID tag, so we called and found out where the dog lived and returned him at the owner's request. I don't think the owner of the dog is the same person as the "horse trader".
As we were walking back down the driveway, I stopped to look at all the horses in this very small enclosure. We noticed they had NO water!!! It was freezing out, so we had to break up the ice in the hose for quite a while to get the water to flow. ALL of these horses tried to drink at once accept for the more subordinate ones who hung back and waited their turn. It was pathetic. We could see wisps of hay in the enclosure, so figured they had been fed. I had completely fogotten about this until I read the posts from the link above.
I thought it was just a freak thing that happened. I had no idea those animals were being mistreated. Kind of makes me sick to think about it. :(

Does anyone know of a horse trader/scammer in Wrightwood?

Hi...Thanks for the info. I am one of the people that has helped to organize the victims...Over $200K in losses and over 70 victims. Our main forum is the awhitehorse.com site.
We've slowed her down...but she is still at it.
Det. Brown, out of the Phelan substation is heading up the investigation, but the argument, per the DA, is that these are civil matters...not criminal.
The victims, of which I am not, include DVM's, children, disabled and the hearing impaired, to name a few. How they became victims, granted they do take some responsibility, is of no significance. They paid for said horse and either did not receive it or received an unsafe, kill pen equine instead. I have done rescue work and harbor no ill toward the kill pen/rescue horses, however, if I purchased a registered Friesian, received copies of the Pedigree along with photos, I sure would expect to get the horse that was sold to me.
So civil???...no way.
Thank you again for your help...and if anyone happens to hike past there...I would love to hear about the condition of the horses.

Thanks for the update. I checked one of the web sites posted and it doesn't sound like shes slowed down much.

Is it right that there are again horses at the property in Wrightwood?
-
That is part of the problem....we do not know where she is physically. Historically she runs and hides under her parents coattails on Twin Lakes Drive...So I am curious if she is there. Recently she had told a victim that she lived on Helen Street, also in Wrightwood.
She has been in trouble in the past with animal neglect and cruelty so I'd also like to know that any critters in her possession are fed and healthy.
Believe me....If anyone of you guys see her please let me know...I know a few people that need to have her served.
I know I am not a resident of Wrightwood; I hope it is okay that I've joined your forum.

Both your links do not have anything about horses or Wrightwood.
Also....I must say as a long time horse owner (9 horses)....anyone who pays anyone any amount of money over $10.00 for a horse seen on the internet or from an ad without a vet check and an in person check out to see if the horse really is a wonder horse is someone who has money to throw away. I've never bought a horse without having the vet do a complete work up including xrays.

I agree internet horse buying can be risky. I too have bought horses via the internet and have been very lucky.
The thing with this seller...she is very good at what she does. She preys on people and is very convincing and sincere sounding. Please take a look at the awhitehorse forum and let me know what you think after reading some of the victims stories.

After reading through the whitehorse forums, If what the buyers there are saying is accurate, I'm having a hard time believing that the D.A. refers to this as a civil matter.
A contract in California must have 3 basic things in it to be legal and binding....an item, a price, and a date. ( and a signature).
In other words, if I say I'm buying a Maytag Washer for $600 dollars on Oct 1st and instead I get a Whirlpool (or nothing at all)...well then that is a misrepresentation and seems it should fall under fraud.
Especially if it happens to more than a few people and shows a pattern of behaviour. People go to jail for Ponzi schemes and embezzlement, which is similar.
Just curious, But why won't the County or state law pursue them in this matter? Or does this fall under the Federal statutes because it is interstate or internet?

Risky? Don't you mean foolhardy? What do you mean you have been lucky buying horses on the Internet? What horse person buys a living, breathing 1,500lb animal that could kill you if you make a mistake in handling or training or cost you thousands in vet bills and doesn't verify that the horse is sound by a visual inspection on site, that the horse looks and performs as advertised and a Vet check? Are you insisting on seeing the horse and working it first....before you send off thousands of dollars; sight unseen?
All con artists are convincing and sincere. Are you sure this isn't a Nigerian scam? They're now "selling" horse trailers on the Internet that don't exist (pictures taken from the Horsetrader) and people are sending them money left and right to get a deal that sounds too good to be true (and is)
I've read through the site and frankly, it's 120 pages of threads of people who knew better and a lot of unverified accusations. The folks took their chances and got burned. Kinda like knowing that if you run enough red lights, you will eventually get an expensive ticket or get dead from cross traffic. Very sad and tragic stories but WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!
I think we've all learned our lesson here. First....never send hundreds/thousands of dollars to someone on the internet for a large animal that you haven't seen. Second, the fact that this individual used to live in Wrightwood is old news and really not important (all kinds of scoundrels have come from Wrightwood) Third, we all feel sorry for the victims but I also feel for the folks in Darfur.
-
Stories like this one, and all stories of animal abuse and victimization, infuriate me.
Scams like this are able to exist only because buyers want to save a buck.
-
Just curious, But why won't the County or state law pursue them in this matter? Or does this fall under the Federal statutes because it is interstate or internet?
[/quote]
The DA told me that he is considering each case individually and that in doing so it is a breach of contract. Does that help? Can't figure out why he wont lump them together.

Foolhardy, perhaps. Lucky I was. I bought slaughter-bound, ex-PMU's from an rancher in Alberta Canada. When all is said and done...I was blessed and lucky.
As for Wrightwood, I am curious if she is back if the neighborhood. Because of her previous animal cruelty/neglect charges I am concerned.
I am not asking you to feel sorry for the victims. They do take responsibility, but the bigger picture here is why has nothing been done about this woman by law enforcement?
Jen
-
I'll repeat....."I think we've all learned our lesson here. First....never send hundreds/thousands of dollars to someone on the internet for a large animal that you haven't seen."
Yeah, it's a cruel world out there. Thanks for you concern about Wrightwood. There are only three places where horses are kept in Wrightwood currently and all have healthy, well cared for animals. No one else has property where horses are kept in our immediate area. Good luck on your dogged quest for retribution.
-
I am sorry if I have somehow offended you. But something tells me no matter what anyone posts they are, in your eyes, imbecilic, obtuse, simple-minded fools.
I again am sorry for instigating your character.
Jen
-
You don't offend me. You described your constituents that way, not me.
Your crusade just amazes me. Whatever happened to common sense?
....I simply find the discussion moot. Where can it possibly go? We all sympathize with all of these maimed, deaf, disabled people who probably couldn't afford to lose any money (let alone properly care for a horse) were swindled out of thousands of dollars. We all are amazed that there are such gullible people out there.
There are few horses in Wrightwood. You can count them on one hand. There are not many people who would send hard earned money, sight unseen, to someone for something as big and hard to keep as a horse in Wrightwood. You probably won't get many takers willing to go on private property and report back to you. (are you even in this state?)
Everyone agrees that it is an injustice that the DA will not file charges but, so what. The jails are so full that she would walk after doing 48 hours in this county because the crime did not involve bodily harm.
Perhaps your postings will probably be more apt to draw the kind of responses you seek on Horse Rescue sites...
-
I did not describe my constituents that way. It was a generalization more directed at myself and your interpretation of my posts.
I am not sure Crusade is the best word for it. How about preventing new victims, helping those already victims, assisting law enforcement as needed, protecting horses? Maybe an educational resource?
Please though sir, do not attack, accuse or belittle the victims. That IS a moot point. If you need to vent about someone, how about the person mis-advertising horses, falsifying and stealing pedigrees, using reputable ranch names that are not in anyway affiliated with her? The woman that cashes checks and sends no horse, uses other people's names and fails to pay court-ordered judgments? And those that foster her? The woman that has kept starving and dying animals and offered no vet or farrier care to them. The woman that has falsified vet papers? Everything seems legit with her at first; Even the contracts. All of the above are documented.
I do not want to mud sling with you. I joined this forum to help, to notify your community, and to gather info for the victims.
I am boggled that you think that what this woman does is justifiable because the victims' should have known better. That is like saying all of the people in New Orleans deserved what they got with Katrina, because they should have known better than to live there. No, they had hoped it would never happen. But it did.
Another example would be if I entered a contract to board my horse and one day the farm managers packed up and left, taking the boarder's horses with them. As a boarder, and a victim am I to blame?
I want you all to know that I will remain a resource for you and whoever else might need information and direction, but I do not feel a need to continue this particular debate.
Sincerely,
Jen

I know very little about horses myself but I did talk to a friend about this issue. She's in her late 30's and has been around horses all her life. She told me she will go anywhere in the country for the right horse but there are several steps that MUST take place:
1: Do not allow an opportunity for bait and switch. Take your own trailer with you.
2: Have your vet meet you where you are buying the horse. If the horse is out of the area have YOUR VET recommend a local vet you can hire. NEVER let the seller pick the Vet.
3: After the Vet has put his stamp of approval on the horse, YOU saddle the horse (with your own saddle) and ride it. During the ride go through all the gaits.
4: You remove the saddle from the horse.
5: You put the horse in your trailer by yourself.
6: Pay for the horse.
If the seller objects to ANY of these steps, walk away with no further discussion.
-
I know that our trainer would never purchase a horse without xrays and her vet confirming the horse is sound.
-
JKV I feel as though you are getting a negative response from Wrightwoods residents. I for one think you are doing the right thing by notifying the people in this town that there could be a potential animal abuser amongst us. Yeah...the buyers should have used more common sense but that does not make light of what this lady has done. It needs to be known and if people just want to point out how stupid the victims are...well let them. They obviously have nothing better to do than to criticize your good intentions....
Its not about the human victims as far as I'm concerned because they really should have known better but it IS about the horse victims. If your posts can prevent more possible abuse then you are golden in my eyes!!

Jen writes from Minnesota and is a good debater.... especially when faced with those of us with limited vocabularies and knowledge of horses.
-
I am in Minnesota. I am college educated, I am an Emergency Room RN. I own horses, my current horses are rescues. I am married and have children. Anything else?
All of the words in my previous posts [do] "go together."
Why on Earth would you engage me so vehemently if you have a "limited" knowledge base regarding horses? Or are you being sarcastic?
Never mind. I am done with you.
Jen

"No...I can debate with the best of them...he is insignificant."
Yeah right. Good luck on your quest of vengence. You have made a lifelong friend on the other site.....You will be embraced warmly by the rogues as family.
-
Wildman--what is up? I usually respect what you have to say, but I'm not understanding the animosity that you're displaying in this situation. I too read through the sites, and believe that their cause is just. Granted there are stupid people out there that will make stupid decisions, such as buying a horse on the internet. However, that doesn't excuse the criminal is who taking advantage of them and stealing their money. Who is truly the bad guy here? Not the ignorant person, but the cruel one.
I think that trying to stop the horse seller is a just cause, and sleuthing about Wrightwood would be a sensible place to request assistance.
Am I missing something?
-
I am wondering the same thing. What's the deal? It seems pretty clear to me that Trina has perpetrated numerous fraudalent deals. The ignorance of marks doesn't make it less of a crime. (Or lawsuit.)
-
Sleuth away. I would urge everyone to cooperate fully with this investigation when asked. It is tough to check your facts living in Minnesota and she can really use some help corralling this person. Give her all the help she asks for.

Wrightwood woman guilty of fraudulent horse sales
10:44 PM PDT on Friday, August 27, 2010
A Wrightwood woman defrauded horse buyers across North America by selling sick or abused horses over the Internet to customers who thought they were buying healthy animals, federal prosecutors said Friday.
Trina Lee Kenney, 32, pleaded guilty to mail fraud Thursday, admitting that she defrauded at least 61 prospective horse buyers in 23 states and Canada, a news release from the U.S. Attorney's office said.
She will appear in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Sept. 7 for arraignment. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
Kenney was arrested after she accepted $5,000 from an FBI agent and U.S. postal inspector, both working undercover, for a horse she never delivered, prosecutors said.
They began investigating after complaints were made by horse-buyers about sales she had made on several equestrian-related websites.
Kenney would make false claims about the breeds, pedigree and health of the horses she had listed for sale, prosecutors said. She offered money-back guarantees to unsatisfied customers yet would not respond or threaten to sue when buyers complained, they said.
Some buyers didn't receive horses and others said they were sent horses that were starved, covered in sores and cuts, couldn't walk because their hooves hadn't been trimmed, or suffered from strangles, a contagious equine respiratory disease, prosecutors said.
In her plea agreement, Kenney admitted to once drugging a horse to make it appear docile when showing it to a buyer. She painted at least two horses black, covering up their true brown color, prosecutors said.

GOOD. This has been going on for years. Not only is she a thief she's an animal abuser. I'm glad they got her. >:(
-
-
Yeah! 3 cheers for justice! Any chance her parents could be facing charges for aiding and abetting?
-
I just LOVE it. I especially love that she was greedy enough to go across state lines to get the feds involved. Nothing like getting justice in 'this world' instead of hoping for it in the next.
-
:2thumbsup:
-
Am I to understand there are people who bought a horse, unseen, from a woman who lives in WW. People who put hundreds of dollars (hopefully not in cash) in an envelope and sent it to her in hopeful anticipation of receiving a new horse?
Are you kidding me? What kind of fool would buy a horse, a cow, or a car for that matter, sight un-seen?
No wonder there are people who make lots of money off of scamming the public, as Ms. Kenny is alleged to have done. The soil for such is rich!
I understand she is in federal custody, under arrest by the US Postal Service, charged with mail fraud?
-
Tonight on NBC 4 News at 11 PM, Anna Garcia is doing a special report on this case, including interviewing the Feds involved.
-
So glad to hear that justice will be served. It is disgusting to think that this kind of crime could go on for so long, and that there are some people who didn't think it was worth pursuing. What a relief that she was finally stopped.
-
The wheels of justice seem to grind very slowly at times but be assured that nobody thought that it wasn't worth pursuing.

Woman Sentenced to 48 Months in Horse Fraud Case
Sixty-one victims of a San Bernardino woman who sold sick horses online finally got justice.
Trina Lee Kenney, of Wrightwood, was sentenced Wednesday to 48 months in federal prison after she agreed to plead guilty on one count of mail fraud.
Kenny sold sick horses over the Internet and in several cases, never delivered them after receiving payment, said federal prosecutors. In all, there were 88 victims and nearly $300,000 in damages.
As part of the plea agreement, Kenney will pay a total of $200,000 in restitution. After the verdict was read, she collapsed and was attended to by medical personnel.
Sylvia Jimenez was one of the buyers who said they paid for healthy horses, but received sick and deformed ones from Kenney. Jimenez paid $1,500 for her horse as part of the online transaction.
"It looked sick," Jimenez said of her horse. "It has blisters in the mouth, and it was bleeding from her privates."
Another victim, Nicole Krakowski, said she paid Kenney $2,800, but never received her horse.
Investigators said Kenney also painted two brown horses black so they would appear to be a more desirable breed.
Prosecutors said many of the horses she delivered were abused or neglected.
"We're shocked that she got the sentence she did," said Susan Blake, one of Kenney's 88 victims."But justice was served."
-
About time. I wish it had been more, particularly for the way she treated those animals. Do her parents/whoever-they-were still live at their property up here?
-
What she did was so horrible. Glad that justice has been served but I think it should have been longer too!
-
The damages were $300,000, yet she has to pay a restitution of $200,000. She got 48 months, but how much of that time will she serve? What about the cruelty to the animals? I don't think the sentence is harsh enough.
I was scammed out of $9,000 from my boss' brother (my boss asked me for the loan, but I knew it was for his brother). He was quite the con artist. He scammed almost $1 million from numerous people, including his parents and siblings. He got 7 years and was to pay restitution at $100 a month once he got out of prison. That's $100 a month to pay back everybody, not each person. That makes my monthly cut about 90-cents. He served about 4 years and I haven't seen a dime. Somehow justice does not seem to be served. (Hey, he's been out of prison for about 2 years now. I think he owes me almost $22 by now.)
-
Chatty, why in the world isn't your BOSS paying you back? He asked you for the loan originally. He should pay you back every cent and then lean on his own brother to get repaid.
-
That's one reason why he's not my boss anymore. (long story)

Oh wow. What a creepy family they must be. So sorry you got caught up in that. >:(

Wrightwood woman imprisoned in horse scheme
By Melissa Pinion-Whitt
A Wrightwood woman charged with selling sick and abused horses to buyers expecting high-quality animals was sentenced Wednesday to 41 months in federal prison.
U.S. District Court Judge A. Howard Matz ordered Trina Lee Kenney, 32, to pay $272,600 in restitution to 88 victims, officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Kenney pleaded guilty in October to mail fraud. She admitted she defrauded prospective horse buyers in 23 states and Canada.
Under the company names Prestige Distribution, Horses and Ponies and Star Horses, Kenney advertised her horses as having specific physical characteristics, abilities and temperaments, or that they were specific breeds or pedigrees.
She received payment for horses and either delivered substandard horses, a different horse than promised or no horse at all, officials said. She said she drugged horses to make them appear docile, painted at least two horses to make them appear black. Some horses were starved, covered in sores and had other health issues.
She claimed to offer a money-back guarantee, but did not give refunds to the victims.
An undercover FBI agent and a U.S. postal inspector paid Kenney $5,000 for a horse. She did not respond to inquiries from the agents after receiving the money.
-
My question is, how did she expect to get away with it? I know it took a while, but did she think she wouldn't get caught? I can't even believe that she got away for it as long as she did.

https://abc7.com/pets-animals/lawsuit-targets-alleged-phelan-puppy-mill/5766926/
Lawsuit targets alleged Phelan puppy mill accused of selling ill dogs, mislabeled breeds
Eleven-year-old Manuel Loy fell in love with the puppy he and his family saw listed for sale on Craigslist.
But the Goldendoodle cost $1,200, so Manuel worked at his dad's barber shop. He earned $600 and his parents pitched in the other $600 to buy the female puppy Manuel had already named Penny.
But within days of bringing the puppy home, the dog was growing ill.
"He had diarrhea. He was throwing up," Manuel said. "He couldn't even walk straight, he was like tumbling over... So then we took him to the vet. He said he had Parvo and it was best to just put him down."
And even before the dog's tragic end, the family learned Penny was actually a male.
And the vet said he wasn't even a Goldendoodle. Manuel found that out while washing the puppy.
"We took him in the shower and his red hair dye came out," he said. "It was all over our hands."
The Loy family is just one of several families suing the Kenney family of Phelan, which their attorney says was running an illegal puppy-selling business out of their home.
"Anybody who's ever had a puppy knows how much you love it and you know how much it hurts when you lose it," said attorney Gary Praglin.
Praglin is representing the Loys and five other families he says were not only scammed out of thousands of dollars, but were emotionally scarred when those dogs quickly grew ill and had to be destroyed.
"Time's up," said Praglin. "The lawsuit's filed and we're going to put an end to it."
Eyewitness News made several calls to the Kenneys for comment, but they were not returned.
With the holidays fast approaching, puppies are often thought of as the perfect gift, but animal rights activists say its important to get a dog from a place that puts the health of the animal ahead of profits.
"Online puppy sellers are not to be trusted," said Caru S.P.C.A. attorney Anna Stancu. "We urge anybody interested in adding a new dog to their family this holiday season adopt from a rescue organization or shelter instead."
