Title: Verizon DSL Problems
Post by: Moose on May 31, 04, 06:34:05 AM
Are other Wrightwood residents having problems the past couple of weeks with DSL access?

I am posting this on behalf of others that I have talked to that do not have Internet access at the moment because Verizon's DSL service is either out or access is sporadic.

If the Verizon subscribers do not also subscribe to the Mobility Package which includes dialup service (20 hrs per month), they are out of luck for access to the internet.

What problems are you experiencing?

I talked to a Verizon representative on the phone today because my DSL wasn't working at all.  What they had me do was unplug my router and my modem from the wall keep it unplugged for 20 seconds and then replug it back in.  My DSL is working fine now.  Also when I talked to the rep there was a recording stating that DSL subscribers in the Southern California area may experience DSL blackouts as they call them but the rep said that it didn't affect Wrightwood.

Mine was also out for the morning. And I unplugged and replugged my equipment too., but that didn't work.

Glad it's back up. This is the only outage I've had for quite a while.

Does anyone know the possibility of cable in wrightwood?

MY DSL only went out once.  I have Verizon and the only time it has gone out is 2 days ago, I just reset the modem and it runs fine now.  Is anyone still having problems with the Verizon DSL problem?  The reason why I ask is because one of my friends has Verizon DSL and it is still out.

My DSL service has been fantastic!  But now each day around lunchtime, the modem begins recycling continuously.  Resetting it fixes it MOST of the time, but sometimes it will recycle for hours, giving intermittent service.  Anyone have any similar story?

I just signed up for Verizon DSL a couple of months ago, and I've had problems.  Mine was down two complete days last week, and now it is sporadic.  I've spoken to others in Wrightwood and the nearby areas and they are having problems, too.  It appears that the outage is random also -- I was still down while someone just a few blocks away was up again. I have called more than once and last week they told me over 20,000 customers were having service problems, and they didn't know why yet.  In addition, I thought I had signed up for dial-up, but really wasn't -- even though one of their computers said I was and one said I wasn't.  Anyway, my friend finally got it all set up for me last week so I was able to use my dial-up when DSL was down.  I need it because I work away from home at times.  It's an extra $9 per month.  I'm not sure other services charge the extra, but it's been worth it with all the problems.  Just make sure you are truly signed up before you really need to use it.

This recent weekend outage was the only problem I've had in a long time. Overall, I am very satisfied with my Verizon dsl.

That's really good to know.   From all I've heard, it's just a fluke.   I do appreciate it more now that I've had to use dial-up!

The modem I got from Verizon has never worked right. I've been trying to get it to work right for 2 months. Now it doesn't work at all.
I've had a very difficult time convincing the people in India that I need a new modem.
I've had no service for at least a week.
This is pretty frustrating.
Then, when I finally communicated to someone that my modem doesn't work, they tell me I can't order a new one until business hours on Monday.
I think I'll just shoot the telephone line.

When you call Verizon DSL always ask for Tier 2 service.  They will try and convince you to work with them but if you insist they will transfer you to someone who is in the US.

What do you expect?  Here is an example of the technology used in by those people you're talking to in India:

Anyone besides me unable to access the internet for the last couple of hours?  I dunno if it was just my computer, but I decided that it wasn't worth trying to call Verizon unless I still couldn't get on here in the morning.  Maybe a weather-related problem?  Everything seems fine now.

Our phone and DSL have been out completely since Sat. morning, off and on the days prior. I am lucky to pick up a weak connection (neighbors) on my laptop right now.

Verizon says this is isolated to us and there is no outage.

Does anyone have any suggestions or similar issues?

I probably can't get a PM, but can be reached at 1050. Verizon was kind enough to forward the # to my cell.

The two times it has happened to us squirrels had chewed through the line - but with the recent weather it could also be a water/ice problem.  As long as you have tried resetting the system and no luck, those are the problems we have encountered here.

After some investigation it does seem as if the box has been exposed to weather. I have reset, rebooted...to no avail.

Sounds like it will be out until Wed at the latest per Verizon. ::)

I haven't had any problems for quite a while - knock on wood!
I have Verizon e-mail, (well, I use Outlook Express, but my address ends in verizon.net), and after reading the above posts, I sent myself a test e-mail about 1/2 hour ago.  Just heard the little "ding-dong", checked messages, and there are 5 new ones, including the one I sent myself.  So apparently it's working here.

I've never been able to access my e-mails from any computer other than this one (at my house).  The ONLY exception has been, if I have Outlook Express closed here, and I'm away, then I can access it thru netmail, but then it's only new ones that haven't gone into OE yet.  None of the old stuff is available.  I like a lot of features of OE, so to me it's no big deal.  Maybe if I travelled a lot, or something....

Rdnckgrl, I just live a couple blocks down from you, so it's strange that mine works, and yours doesn't.  Although I guess that's not uncommon with lots of power issues around here......

The full version of Outlook comes with Microsoft Office which includes
Microsoft Access
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Outlook
Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft Word

I looked at express it has a similar option under tools, options, maintenance, but it's not quit worded the same way.. in express it says something about deleting new messages after 'x' number of days..

In Outlook it says delete messages from server after 'x' number of days..

The biggest convenience of webmail is the ability to send and receive mail from any PC with access to the web. However prefer  I Outlook when I'm at my own office, on my own PC.

If she has a router for a wireless network, that could be the culprit instead of the modem. In that case she should recycle power on the router by just pulling out its power cord, waiting 30-60 seconds, then replacing it. That's happened to us before.

Hello, I am at the WW Library and wanted to look here to see if anyone's DSL is still out!  No, I did not have a router installed, just the old Verizon Modem box that we got a few years back.  I purchased a new modem yesterday (first Verizon rep said Modem went bad) at BEstBuy which has a built in router in it. The reps at Verizon have yet to be able to rectify our problems with their troubleshooting.  I am not sure what to do, Verizon said they would telephone me back within 24 hours and then asked on a scale of 1 - 10, what number would I give them in recommending their service?????
Title: Re: Verizon DSL Problems
Post by: ChrisLynnet on Mar 18, 08, 03:31:05 PM
Verizon technical support is pretty useless. More than once I've had a rep take me through a series of steps that don't work and then they tell me to get a new modem. I then call the main customer service number to find out that there is an outage in our area. No kidding, it's happened 3 times now.  :(

Since my DSL is working I'm guessing an outage is not your problem. Since they're calling you back that means they've bumped up your support to a senior engineer; hopefully they'll actually be able to help you. Good luck, it's so hard being without access.

I'd recommend Wrightwood's Internet service, but since you don't know yet where the problem lies I'd wait until Verizon's callback. If the problem is with your PC then a new service won't help yet.

Verizon's Gregg came out today and helped me get back on line. What a freakin' Nightmare...now I have someone trying to break into my PayPal account. Anyone know how I can change my IEP Address?
All this Internet Speed Verizon is selling...I guess I have been overpaying for the 700 mbps. I have been paying the $32.00 price per month for the faster speed of 3.0 gbps, but my little home set up modem could only go as fast as 700 mbps. I got connected to a person in ......INDIA--what the heck????  She had no clue, kept repeating herself and trying to sell me the latest Verizon product.  I would like get really clear as to who is paying for what up here in WW?  And..are there any other carriers for DSL?
Has anyone received a refund for overpaying to Verizon? If so, how much and how'd you rectify it?

What makes you think someone is trying to break in to your Paypal account? Because you got one of those e-mails? Those are all phishing attempts. Paypal will ALWAYS address you by name, and not something generic, like "dear Paypal customer"

I'm having some kind of an issue, since this afternoon.  I don't think it's a Verizon DSL problem, but I can't access anything via Internet Explorer.  It won't even load.  I'm on here now via Mozilla Firefox.  I can't send or receive e-mails either right now (I use Outlook Express, must be connected to IE somehow.  I dunno.)  This started about mid-afternoon.  It's happened before, and it seems to fix itself eventually.  Frustrating, even more so cuz I'm so computer illiterate, and anything other than what I'm used to is a real challenge.

3PinkRoses, I have a friend up here who uses DSL Extreme for her internet access, rather than Verizon, and she is very happy with it.  I don't know anything about it, but it might be something to look into.  And I can't believe that HP wants $ for their tech support!  Dang, I didn't know anyone charged for that.  I've had to call Dell a few times, not many, thank goodness, cuz I usually don't know what I'm talking about and I don't know the proper terms, and they usually can barely speak English.  Plus it seems like you are on the phone forever.   :P

The best way to get viruses and spyware is to use Internet Explorer 7 or older, use Outlook Express, not update your windows and of course not have a firewall.

Well, I shoulda thought of this before I posted my "whine" above, but I turned the computer off and started over, and now it's fine.  I guess I should put a sticky note on my computer that says, "reboot before you whine", or something to that effect.   ;D
I still can't play the word game Text Twist unless I go through MSN - I've always done it on Yahoo before.  This started a couple weeks ago.  I wonder if a system restore back to a month or so ago would fix that, but I don't wanna screw anything else up.  ???  Oh well, if that's all that's wrong, I ain't gonna complain...... ;)

I do have a firewall, and windows updates itself periodically.  I am guilty of using OE, and I don't know how to update IE.

Because most hackers attack this browser because of its commonality.....and every time they put out a new version there have been more holes.  Also 99% of all malicious spyware comes through this browser.

There are many tech reasons Kimmy but  there other things as well...

For example, Internet Explorer 8 is in beta and Firefox already has the updates :

Firefox is updated/upgraded by a collective community that insures the best of all worlds.

Mozilla is the company, however,  it was also the early name of their  first browser and they are at Mozilla.org.  But the browsers that most people use is from them is called Firefox.  They have different versions with different names.  I think the old Mozilla is now seamonkey or something funky.

from wikipedia...you got me interested...
For simplicity, the word Mozilla is often used to refer to all Mozilla-based browsers. For example, when it is said that a website is usable by Mozilla browsers, it means that it is usable by Mozilla Suite, Firefox, Camino, Netscape 6, etc. In some older Internet statistics programs, the term "Netscape 5.x" is incorrectly used to refer to these browsers because the user agent string starts with Mozilla/5.0.

Yes Linkline is another ISP and provides service to Wrightwood in places that Verzion refuses.

What is Linkline?  Another ISP?

So John,
I was reading this post of yours from back in January and saw this reference to Linkline. This is news to me. I went to the website and it's a little confusing to me. It lists "Verizon" packages, etc. How does it differ? How did you find out about it? Do you have a static IP? What package do you have?

As you may recall, we've had lot's of problems with Verizon and our Linksys router. It's never been resolved. We're going on 8 months now and no one's been able to fix our issue. I'm at a loss.

I was considering trying a different brand of router, but I'm supposed to use the Linksys for my work (approved by our security dept.)

I also considered a fixed ip address, so as to eliminate the issue of the router hunting for the new address every time Verizon changes it (about 3 times a day). But, the cheapest package that Verizon offers is the business account for ~$90/mo. Linkline shows a T3 static ip for $49.95/mo.

I'm confused, but very interested in this new alternative.......
Title: Re: Verizon DSL Problems
Post by: Wrightwood on Jun 13, 08, 09:35:27 AM
They show a Verizon chart because that's what's available in our general area.

We pay 59.77 a month and that includes 3 static IP addresses for 3.0m/768k service. (Which is $49 a month plus $10 extra for the additional IP addresses)

There's a Linksys router on each of the static IP addresses and have had no problems at all.

The only complaint we have with Linkline is that we've never received a referral credit that they offer and we've referred plenty of folks to them  :'(

Try turning off the dsl modem, wait a few minutes then turn it back on, this will reset it and also resync it with the mother ship.

And don't forget shut down your computer (sometimes better than restart) and start it back up again.

Just a few thoughts...

Try the DSL reset first. If that doesn't work then try the computer shutdown/restart. That way if it happens again, you know shich one to do.
Title: Re: Verizon DSL Problems
Post by: Wrightwood on Jul 17, 08, 09:03:49 AM
If a router/firewall is being used it should also shut down and restarted.

I've found the best method is to have one power strip (surge protector) with the modem, router/firewall and any network switches or hubs connected. Turn the power strip off for 10-15 seconds and all devices are reset.

This would not be the same power strip (surge protector) that the computer, printer and scanner should be connected into.

How do you reboot the DSL modem, and how would you know when that needs to be done?  I don't know what a router is, I don't think I have one.  What does rebooting the modem do?  I just turn off the computer and restart it, when the thing gets really slow.
Title: Re: Verizon DSL Problems
Post by: lagomorphmom on Dec 18, 09, 03:51:31 PM
Resetting the modem 'clears and resets it's brain' so to speak. All you need to do is switch it off (or unplug the power if there is no switch), wait a few seconds and then turn it back on. This will reboot it. Whenever you don't have service, try this first.

You probably don't have a router unless you have more than one computer as a router allows more than one computer to share the DSL line.

Restarting your computer usually only helps if your computer is slow, ie files taking a long time to open. You may also find it helps to restart Firefox, which I think you use, if you've been browsing for a long time with many open tabs. You can save all the tabs using Session Manager addon, it's one of my essentials.
Title: Re: Verizon DSL Problems
Post by: ForestGal on Dec 18, 09, 04:09:57 PM
Thanks, lagomorphmom!  Yes, I indeed use Firefox, and the only time I don't have service is when the power is out, so I guess I really haven't needed to reboot the modem.  And this is the only computer I have, so I'm pretty sure there is no router here.

For some reason, this computer just doesn't like IE any more.  I've been using Firefox for a couple of years, but last week when my sis was visiting, she tried to open her e-mails using IE, not knowing that I don't use it, and it gave her all kinds of fits.  I told her to start over and try it with Firefox, and it worked just fine.  Any reason why IE just won't work here?

Try resetting your internet modem.

Use SpeedTest before and after to see if it really helped (some websites download slowly and are not an indication of your home speed).

Note that your fastest speed will be if your computer is connected directly to the internet modem. It will slow slightly on a wired network and a little more on a wireless network.

If it is still slow call Verizon, I use GetHuman.com for no nonsense numbers.

Been having problems with intermittency of my DSL signal the last month or so.  Called Verizon and they ran a test and said that my download speed of 2.83MHps is too fast up here in Wrightwood to run without intermittency and so they cut it down to 1.5MHps and said that that should take care of the problem.  Here's the real problem:  from their end this solution is wonderful since they're giving me 40% less bandwidth for the same cost per month, thus increasing their profit.  I'm going to call them back and get my old 2.83MHps reinstated.  This is ridiculous.  If it was too fast to run without intermittency, why wasn't I having a problem with it at that speed for the last 10 years?  Do you follow me?  I think they train their employees to reduce it to a slower speed any time someone complains about intermittency, as it's in the best interest of their bottom line.  Arrgh!
On another note, there is a orange and white sign near the post office that says "High-speed INTERNET available here. Into Data Communications  844-829-3993. Excede"  Has anyone tried this company?  Do they offer a better internet connection at a more reasonable price than Verizon?  How about Dish Network Internet?  Has anyone tried it?  Thanks.

All these times people have complained about Verizon and DSL, I have sat here thinking, "What are they talking about? Works great here." Now I know what you are talking about. Anyone else in the East Canyon area having such a sluggish internet and inability to stream? We have turned off the router and modem several times and restarted and it still is terrible. If I call Verizon to complain, will I get one of the foreign people who try to tell me it is MY problem and not Verizons?

Hi Sweet Neighbor, it's because half the neighborhood is home today (Serrano Sr are done, etc..) streaming, using internet etc.  Anytime Students, teachers, weekenders etc are here, the internet is very, very slow. We're also practically at the end of the line from the center of town substation, unfortunately for us, here in EC we get crumbum service.  Turn off the "wifi" on your mobile device and any other wifi things you might have, that helps us a lot. How's your pup?

Twinkie... 3Pink just gave you some good advice. And, yes.. if you call Verizon for your DSL you will likely get a friendly person in a foreign country that will start by telling you to unplug everything in your house.  (They will not immediately admit they're in a foreign country.. but you can squeeze it out of them.)  I think the unplug everything is just part of their script. They will also take your cell #to call you back. That is a ruse. They will disconnect you and not call you back.  That has been my experience anyway. Lagomorph.. has a number in this thread to get through to someone in the U.S. You know if they say "I'm in Iduhooo" they may not actually be here.  cheryl o7o

Thanks 3PinkRoses and tcaarabians for the responses.  This has been going on since yesterday.  It is so frustrating.  I hope it calms down soon because I  only stream for TV and am having withdrawals!  haha.  3Pink, I will send you a message on Facebook about my pooch.

Just moved to the area,  Verizon is no longer taking any new customers, or if you cancel your service or move to a different location you wil no longer be able to get DSL and be at the mercy of  satellite Internet. If anyone knows a way around this  I would greatly appreciate it, would love to have DSL.  Thanks!

PBrady... Cancelling your service is why I still have mine in my late-Mother's name. All I wanted to do was take her name off and change it to mine. But, you have to cancel first and I was not going to take the chance that I would somehow be thrown into a wait-list for DSL service.  So, Mom lives on for now. I do pay her bill.. I think she would appreciate that.  I don't have much of a problem with my DSL here in P.H. I think those of you that have multiple needs and larger download needs do have a problem.

Not that the consumer should be made to wait for service, but Frontier is making statements that things will begin to improve when they take over after Verizon's blatant neglect.  Ignore the headline below, BTW.  Personally I think it would be quite miraculous to see FiOS deployments to somehow begin again.  That would take government funding.  If Wrightwood ends up with fiber from the company mentioned elsewhere on this site, and they can deliver on all of the other things that come with being a service provider then good for you guys.

On the copper side, we actually have a playbook that describes in detail how to upgrade the Verizon architecture to what I would say is next-generation broadband capabilities," McCarthy said. "It starts with some building blocks and that is one of the things we'll focus on out of the gate...........I think in this case it might be replacing some electronics, but it's not a heavy lift from a construction perspective," McCarthy said. "By putting in a shelf and next-generation capabilities, whether it's VDSL, ADSL2+, or all the different flavors you can use to serve the different loop lengths in a market you achieve the ability to bring a fresh product set into an area at a fairly low cost.
What the Frontier CEO describes above and makes sounds like a simple application of cash to the situation is what Verizon has neglected to do - a simple expenditure to continue feeding the machine that is providing competitive service to customers.  But words from CEOs aren't worth much.  Actions will speak volumes.

Update on our situation...it went from sluggish to absolutely NO internet. Needless to say, a technician is coming tomorrow. Any ideas what we could try in the meantime?

A few above have mentioned this, but I thought it might be useful to make it more obvious and provide a link, since this may solve Verizon problems in Wrightwood once and for all:

1 GB Fiber coming soon to Wrightwood

Things are still in early stages, but it is work being done by a fairly local company and folks that live in Wrightwood, so the motivation is strong.

Well I guess I'll just have to wait until then :-\ Was hoping for DSL in the meantime, oh well there's always my Sprint LTE phone to keep me in the loop as I wait for the one gig fiber! ( which by the way is insane ) never knew they made Internet that fast..

Thanks.
Appreciate the replies!

Have experienced at least a dozen internet outages in less than an hour. Most I've had to unplug modem, then reconnect to the modem when the service comes back on. Can see lightening to the north. No rain or lightening here in WW.

The high desert is getting hammered by a storm right now. I can see lightning from the LA county line north of the 18 all the way across to VV, Apple Valley and beyond.

There was a spectacular lightening show over the high desert last night. We booted down everything before dusk and just watched the show. Get ready because here it comes today.  The cells I can see on the radar are currently moving along the ridges here. There are more to the east. I can hear thunder already.  Mostly to the west of us as of now. The cells aren't all that far from us.   cheryl o7o

DSL connection is offline at our home. Router & modem rebooted to no effect. Phone calls to & from cellphone to landline appears to be OK, so I'm guessing that the issue is on the DSL side...

The whole V internet system went down about 1am this morning. Interestingly, my computers were showing I was connected, as was the modem, so I tried many times to get online, rebooting the modem & checking at the Verizon site which also showed my computer as being online. Yet, I couldn't get to the Internet in any way with either computer, Kindle, or Smart TV. Finally, at 3am I finally called V and was given the message that there was an outage in our area, the technicians were working on it, but there was no anticipated time of service reinstatement. It was a conundrum since the server was showing the devices as being connected even when the whole system was down. In any case, I'm grateful the service was restored by this morning.

Agreed.  By the time I left for work around 6:15 am, the connection was back online, but on the slow side...

Our internet's been going to dial-up speed around 11pm every night, then dropping out completely at 1am for the last week or so.  I know because I work online at night.  It's strange, because usually it only gets slow on weekends, when there are more people up here in town.  I know better than to call Verizon, though, because it's completely pointless unless you enjoy wasting time.  They'll run you through a bunch of BS, and will admit it's BS if you talk to the "tech" enough, but they have to run you throw it, checking your router and blaming anything but them before they can send the complaint to the corporate office.  God I hate Verizon.

Anyway, my only hope has been that they're upgrading infrastructure at night.  Please don't anyone kill my hope.

3/31/16 Frontier takes over.  Wont be much longer before you don't have to endure talking to people in foreign lands so talking to tech support will get less painful.  Will everything turn rosy immediately?  Probably not, but that problem for customers will be gone.

I'd like to think that if you knew the statistics about the amount of people's issues actually got solved by the "bunch of BS" you might look slightly more favorably upon it.  I know Verizon is a big faceless corporate monster, but the support Techs really are just trying to do their jobs, I'm pretty sure.

Not sure if this is good or bad.  I have Frontier in Arizona for both landline and DSL.  DSL is not the best to say the least.  Sort of like in WW...
With DSL your experience comes all the way down to the individual set of wires your modem is plugged into inside your house.  There are many variables that can affect how good or bad it is you can't really say that a company is good based on something like that.  You can call Frontier "good" if they make DSL available where it was not previously, make additional network upgrades that will improve the stability of people's connection and they need to make DSL fast enough to functionally keep up with the competition.  Then they have to offer a competitive price and provide customer service that isn't intentionally difficult to interact with (as Verizon has unfortunately done) by affording employees (Americans) the time and tools to fix problems when they arise.  Verizon isn't interested in doing ANY of those things.  NONE.  The executives running Verizon and their Board of Directors are disgusting people.  Absolutely filthy.

We are certainly not alone in dealing with Verizon.   The problem for us is none of the Tri communities are bona fide towns.  We would have to sue Verizon individually or as part of a class action suit.
