Title: Wildman's Best
Post by: Wildman on Nov 20, 06, 09:29:38 PM: We've come a long way since that fateful day just over a year ago when I got my Canon D20 camera and started taking photographs. Thousands of shots later, I am still learning something every day, thanks to Wrightwood and a few others. What once was so difficult to comprehend is now second nature and for the most part, if I can see it, I can photograph it. I get great pleasure from capturing moments in time that tell a story. I am not often successful but when I am, the reward is great. I also enjoy sharing the things I see through my viewfinder.

My grandkids have requested that I start posting my photos again...so I will. Some might be a reprise from the first two threads but most will be original work. Hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoy sharing them with you.

The Doves roost in the old, dead tree in Katie and JC's pen with the sunset coloring the sky behind them. We have an exceptional amount of them this year and I attribute the warm weather for keeping them around. They settle in around dusk and you can hear them calling to each other.

As many may know myself, Firefightersteve, Josh and over 200 other folks had been working for the past few weeks assisting the families of the five firefighters killed recently with family funeral and memorials. On the morning of the memorial service, I was at my emotional and physical weakest. We had been working twenty hour days and there was not end in sight. I had driven home for more uniforms and when I woke at dawn....I was greeted with this sight. I had been questioning my own ability to deliver and I needed this sunrise. I believe that I was given this gift at my lowest point as a sign things would work out.

The memorial for 10,000 went off without a hitch and was an uplifting time for our families and forest employees. I drove down the mountain peaceful in knowing my request for a sign had been granted.

This wonderful old barn is located on the road to the Sequoia National Forest and is a favorite of mine. I stop and photograph it every time I pass by. I wonder what it was like to have built it with hand tools at the turn of the century. There were three deer in the grass to the right that I didn't see until I had taken the picture.

Lenticular clouds formed the basis for the preceding picture....this one is more of the normal, run of the mill, inspiring sunrise. It pays to be up this early.

Helicopters have played a big part of my life, beginning in Viet Nam. I have watched their roles change over the years. One of the roles I enjoy watching the most is their water dropping capabilities. This ship has just dipped from the Trinity River near Junction City, CA and is outbound to drop some water on the Bar Complex. It is dangerous work and is not for the faint at heart.

Finally, one more with a water theme. This one is called Water
Ice Drips because of the ice spikes that can be seen. Took this a month ago in Monache Meadows on a fishing trip. Didn't catch a lot of fish but the ones we did get were very special. Found this little grotto where the river poured over a log while I was pondering. At this altitude, I spend a lot of time pondering.

When I went outside to look, Coyote was strolling across the back hill eating seeds. He wasn't the least bit concerned about our presence. He was very alert and kept checking his back.

Coyote is very much adapted to living in this country. Can you see him as he crosses into the brush? He just melts away from view.

I don't know what words to use really except that this shows me how God creates in a way that is unique to all creatures and this is where the coyote belongs obviously. Thank you for the pictures! Wildman (glad your dog is safe behind a fence.)

For Bishop area, explore the roads that lead off of 395 near the Casino at the north end of town. They will give you the big vistas with the mountains above. Also, as you come into town, take East Line street in both directions. One way takes you to the Owens River and the other to Bishop Creek and the lakes. Both are full of opportunities. You must go to Galen Rowell's Mountain Light gallery on the corner of Line st and 395. You will never see photography the same.

Yes, there is a plan. All of the creatures who live here in the chaparral are very adapted to this environment. Coyote is an opportunist. He will eat just about anything...including my chickens if I am not being smart about keeping them. We enjoy and respect watching how they all fit together.

The pond is the focal point for many of the valley's wildlife. Everyone from Bobcat and Coyote to the tiniest Goldfinch drinks or bathes in the water. It is like a magnet. The lilys that grow are simply incredible for their visual beauty and color. They smell nice, too. This is the last flower this year in all it's glory. They are all gone until next spring when the pond will once again populate itself with tadpoles, lily pads and flowers.

The Sharpshinned Hawk is one of the fastest fliers in the valley. He can make ninety degree turns through the trees when he is pursuing his favorite meal, Quail. He must be pulling 8 G's as he circles around a tree and connects with one of the plump birds that live here. He comes to the pond every morning and slowly takes a drink.

I was up at Grassy Hollow Visitors Center the other day and was struck with the stark beauty of our mountains. I also reflected on the folks who came before us...to settle and to recreate when it was really wild. It still awes me when the wind is blowing and there is no one on the highway and you can hear the trees singing.
Still mighty glad we settled here 35 years ago.

This year, I took this while working on the Wrightwood house. The next day, most had blown off in a wind storm.

These two hummingbirds are the last guard that is still hanging around. Last year, we had hummers all winter. These old gentlemen enjoy the warm sunshine and are willing to share...to a point.

This time, she saw the Sharpshinned Hawk landing down at the pond for a drink. He spent quite a bit of time just relaxing between drinks. Now we notice him there almost every morning.

I've photographed them on the road to Table Mountain at the lookout and seen them while waiting for helicopters at the old CalTrans Yard. Wrightwood has photographed the Sharpshinned hawks at his guzzler.

The Hummingbird shot is cropped but not altered. I think I caught them both in a moment of repose...they were just sitting there for the longest time. We still have a couple hanging around but with this morning's heavy frost...can Winter be too far away?

Firefightersteve...saw you and the crew last night in the Electric light parade!

Last year, when we had the heat wave in February and the Manzanita blossomed, we had ten. They just knew that there was an abundance of nectar and were here. This fellow doesn't have to fight for space anymore...the other bird stays in the front.

Speaking of very cool....this Quail was singing this morning as the fog rolled in. Not sure what he was so happy about but he kept it up for almost ten minutes before the Sharpshinned Hawk sent him on his way. Gambrel, the singing Quail.

You have certainly developed your "eye" for photography. How did you get the light at the front of the Joshua tree when the sun was setting in the back??

The Photograph has flash on it. On the Canon 20D and most newer cameras, there is a flash setting. I hit the button and then adjust the meter above or below the median setting. In this case, I used -1.7 below median as the setting, which warmed up the flash a bit. The further into the minus you go, the warmer and softer the flash becomes....the plus numbers give you a hotter, brighter flash. I read about it in one of Galen Rowell's books (Go to mountainlight.com) where he talked about using the on camera fill flash and how the -1.7 seemed to be just right for most fill applications. Now all that being said, I am still practicing with different settings in different places.

Post by: Wildman on Nov 30, 06, 08:09:35 PM: A couple of days ago, when the clouds were still partially here, sunrise was spectacular with the old, dead Pinon in the foreground. I know the dead tree needs to come out but the wildlife are so attracted to it. Right now, there are over 75 dove roosting in it every night.

Post by: Wildman on Dec 05, 06, 11:14:12 AM: This fellow is the last guard of the hummingbirds that occupy our valley. There is an Anna's and this guy, a Rufus. Last year we had a bunch in January and February....we'll see about this year.

The picture was taken with my new Canon 30D that just arrived on the 19th. It was one of the first pictures I took.

The Quail are eternal optimists. They stand under the sparrow feeder and wait for food to fall from the sky. At times, there can be a whole lot of feathered mouths waiting to be fed. This male is no exception.

Post by: Wildman on Dec 25, 06, 10:45:41 PM: Watching nature as they live their lives around you is a real gift. I think of the wall to wall houses where there are no places for hawk or owl to hunt....how sad.

I was watching this bird this fall and couldn't figure out why it kept backing away from the feeder. I didn't think I was close enough to spook it. When I looked at the picture, I realized there was a Yellowjacket right where the bird wanted to be.

I've always liked this one. Could be a Amercian Goldfinch or the Lesser Goldfinch. Both are plentiful during the winter months and love the expensive seed.

Post by: Wildman on Dec 31, 06, 11:23:52 PM: As most of my friends know, my son and I assisted with the funerals and Memorial for the United States Forest Service Firefighters from Engine 57 who lost their lives on the Esperanza Fire on October 27th. One of the things that was done was to fly five American Flags over their Fire Station, the Forest Service District Headquarters and the Forest Superintendent's Office.

This Forest Service Firefighter is waiting patiently while the fifth flag is flown and folded for presentation to each of the crew's families. It was so important to these Hot Shot firefighters to get each fold on each flag just perfect...to make sure that each flag had flown the identical amount of minutes at each location and that they be ready for Moms, Dads, Grandparents and Wives

As they folded the last one and gave it to her, a single tear ran down her cheek.........and a lot more ran down mine.

Winter is definately here and I'm hoping for more snow then rain. This photo is JC, one of our Draft horses, standing in a snow storm last winter. The horses frequently don't come in out of the cold or rain but just stand in the elements. With their thick fur coats, it must be too warm in their enclosures.

I've been a part of the dark side since I bought the first Mac in 1984 with no hard drive....just two floppy discs. I ended up working for Apple for 3 years as a consultant helping create their State and Local Government Marketing channel.
I still have my first MAC II with a 40 MB hard drive. It was a dream come true....travel around the country evangelizing the Mac to cops and firefighters. Remember.....IBM stands for "I wished I'd bought a Macintosh" or "I've Been Misled"! ;D

Wow, we go back about the same. I had an Apple IIe, then got the Mac II when it first came out. Oh, the color!!! I've still got mine, too - got any ideas what to do with it before I finally take it to the Mac old age home in sky?

One thing is for sure, Coyote just casually walked across the back hill this afternoon and thought that she simply looked like lunch. This is our regular, daily visitor who will eat just about anything, including chickens if the opportunity arises. We've watched Coyote bouncing mice...eating seeds....digging up bugs and chewing on a left over carrot down at the horse corrals. Very healthy looking and acting.

We don't get as many good sunsets because there are seldom clouds to the West in the evening. Here is the sunrise:

We got a dusting of snow here at the Ranch and one of the older Joshua Trees looked interesting this morning.

Wildman, great shot!! That is why I have so much trouble getting flying photos of the owls, they take off, swoop low, and they are gone! TODAY I found one of the owls back in our Joshua Tree...I am hoping they are planning on making their family in that tree again! The owl looked at me (looks cross-eyed too), but did not seem to care that I was there. I am not sure if this owl is one of the original owlets from last year or not..

We're not sure how old Sketchy is but a good guess is around 5-7 years. She got her name from climbing a 90 Pine tree in our yard and camping out for over a week. When we went to climb to get her, she went to the very top. She rode down unwillingly in a rucksack and was "sketchy" ever since. She is a wonderful cat who makes little demands other then to be with her pal, Buzz and to be a great mouser.

This Lesser Goldfinch is part of the crowd that hangs out at the little seed feeder (with the seeds that cost more then gold) and only in the Winter. They leave to go to the high country in the spring.

Finally, this is my favorite chicken. Her name, appropriately enough, is Chicken.
She is a Rhode Island Red and lays an egg a day like clockwork. Friendliest bird I have ever owned. She is the sole survivor of the Coyote predation and now has a new flock to hang out with. Chickens are like having a feathered aquarium.

I, too, am awed by the beauty that I find in my front yard. I find myself pausing in the my current endeavor and just putting my screen saver on with music to take my mind away for a moment.

Even better are the surprises that come when you download to the computer and see things that you didn't see through the lens....like these Red Tail Hawks. This pair has raised several families in our valley. They were doing an aireal ballet yesterday afternoon and as they passed high overhead, I took photos. Here is the photo before zooming in....what I saw.

When I zoomed in on the computer, I could see that he (The male has the feather gap) was carrying a twig or straw to take back to their nest site. Both birds had material in their beaks. At this point, he is in a high and shallow dive back the nest.

The fast flyer can also be see flying through the trees like an F-16 while chasing a Quail. He has a favorite perch he likes to use for plucking and eating the birds (and I collect the left over feathers for my fly tying).

Any one who lives near this type of fuel (Phelan-Pinon Hills-Oak Springs Valley-Desert Front and parts of Wrightwood) might face flames like these from now until next rains. Note flame lengths going up slope compared to the size of the firefighters. Brings home the reason why brush clearance is not only essential....it's a lifesaver.

Can you see the reflection of the Rufus Hummingbird in the glass feeder? Certain times of the day it is quite common as the light gets it reflective. Almost a minature mirror image. Normally, I can't get the entire body in the reflection.

From the archives...partial transparency is one of the bonus features hummingbirds that are comfortable around humans will often display. Only a few of the species will show this trait.

This fellow made no bones about where he was. It's Spring and the Quail are getting their coveys gathered up. This male Gambrel Quail was letting everyone know he was king of the neighborhood.

I think you have CA Quail there. CA quail have a scaled belly and Gambel's Quail have a belly with no pattern, but a black patch underneath. It is hard to tell for sure in that photo. The photo of the male quail on the previous page is definitely a CA Quail.

I was surprised when we moved to Yucca Valley that we have Gambel's Quail up here as I thought they were only low desert quail.

Regardless of the species, the photo is absolutely beautiful!!!!

As always, Josh helped me out with the graphics and planning. I am most proud of the fact that he is wearing my old badge. I had to get another one when they brought me in from pasture. We're standing in front of the brand new Engine 101.....both of us served at Station 101 as our first assignment.

school with their friends from K-12. Still remember them bundled up in snow suit with little backpacks walking to school in the snow (before we closed school for snow). Wrightwood has been good to our family.

My father used to enter pictures in the Orange County Fair and it was quite competitive. He won a couple of first place through honorable mentions.

I imagine you have no time to do that, but you'd blow the competition away! That helicopter shot is outstanding!

pier. Brought back lots of memories as a youngster surfing the pier until my arms dropped off. The waves were small and blown but it brought a smile.

  I always admire that barn also when going through Onyx and Weldon...You ever stop and read some of the headstones in that old graveyard? Do yourself a favor and read that National Highway Marker at the Jct of Hwys 178 &14 that tells about Walker Pass...definetly one of the most interesting of all the markers I've read. Another good one at the top of Walker Pass, also.

This is a bird that has been facinating me all week. I have never seen one before and this one stood out with his fearlessness and a very erratic up and down flight from the branches to the ground. Like a Chickadee, he is very friendly and not afraid in the slightest. I looked it up and I think it is a Western Peewee but I can never tell from the darn photos in the books. This is the first time I have observed one here in the chaparral.

Last Sunday (during the fire) we were down in West Cajon. We saw three of these tankers heading up West Cajon within a couple minutes of each other. We were wondering if they had to go somewhere to refuel? It seemed odd that all three of them were heading out at the same time. Any ideas?

Post by: Wildman on Sep 22, 07, 03:06:02 PM: They were probably just getting into the "mix" at the fire after refueling or refilling retartdant at the old Norton AFB-San Bernardino International. The tanker base is there. The tankers have to join a pattern around the fire and it takes them quite a ways to get lined up. The big DC 10 refills in Victorville.

At one point during the Butler II fire we had 16 air tankers assigned to us. That gaggle of aircraft all coming back from refilling is more then likely what you saw.

Post by: Wildman on Sep 23, 07, 09:17:19 AM: It depends on where and which area I am shooting. Most of my hummingbird feeders are near a window and often, I can use the smaller lens. If I sit down in a chair for a while, I can be very close to the feeders and the hummers.

The 100-400 mm is definitely the workhorse. Depending on the time of day, I will shoot with the speed at 250+. Obviously, the more light means the faster I can shoot. I sometimes will bump up the ISO setting to allow for speeds over 1000 and stopping all of the action. You may have noticed, a majority of my shots are at very low apertures ..... whatever the meter will allow me to shoot. I have found that, for my style of photos, only the subject is in full focus and the backgrounds are blurred or out of focus. Someday, I will learn to work with subjects from here to infinity.

Finally, this photo was at the upper range of limits. It was almost dark and these two Great Horned Owls were sitting in a tree at the back of our five acres
on the hill. We hear them most every night calling to each other.

He also flew after the Quail like an F-18 fighter jet....weaving and bobbing after them through the trees.

I was out feeding the horses this morning and part of my routine is cleaning and filling water buckets. I do that every morning but this morning I was prompted to walk to the house and get the camera. I shot this photo.

While I was shooting that photo, I noticed the Moon was setting behind the hill and the tree and shot this picture.

When I downloaded the camera to see what I had shot (I have a great deal of trouble seeing through the viewfinder), I saw that there was an Owl or Hawk sitting in the tree. You decide what it is....I can't tell.

First Crossing: Crossing the creek on the Sheriff's Cattle Drive a number of years ago. It was the first time we had driven over water with the wagon and the girls crossed as if they had done it a hundred times. You should have seen some of the several hundred outriders try, though.

He wasn't quite sure if he should stay around as we drove by or not. He did fly....kinda crash landed in the top of a tree and promptly, fell to the ground again. He survived those early adventures and is now soaring over our valley.

I was trying to get in better position to photograph some hawks in a tree and I wasn't looking down at all. I heard a snort and looked up to see this very large bull having a dust bath. I slowly backed up across the pasture and when I ducked back through the fence I saw this hand lettered sign, " Don't cross this pasture unless you can do it in 9 seconds flat. Our bull does it in 10!"

Post by: Wildman on Nov 13, 07, 01:00:12 PM: I attended one day of County Fire's Advanced Rope Rescue course and I was extremely impressed with the degree of difficulty and skill that was being demonstrated by the students and the instructors. First rate stuff all the way.
