138 Fire

Now a second alarm. Div 107 also enroute.
-
Getting a handle on it.
Note: lots of down power lines all over
-
Crews are being warned about down power lines in the area.
Power outages in West Cajon Valley.
-
What side of Hwy 138?
-
East
-
Forward rate of spread stopped. Embers blowing in 25 MPH winds.
-
Down lines also in Lytle Creek.
-
New 50 to 100 foot spot - 1/4 to 1/2 east just took off
-
Remember the Ramp Fire. It was believed contained twice but erratic winds kept spreading it. The IC is now requesting a closure of 138 between Lone Pine Cyn and Hiway 2.
-
Now gone to 3rd alarm. Second fire has rapid rate of spread.
-
Heavy Fuels
-
2nd spot fire - 1-2 acres running along Hwy138
-
2nd spot 3-5 acres - contained shakey
-
Total 8 acres - still potential
-
Shakey containment on second spot. Lots of embers blowing over line. Joshua trees are throwing embers everywhere. There is still a potential for additional spot fires.
-
Unified ordering is now thorugh USFS. Two handcrews have been requested.
-
Just got a call from my daughter who is on her way home from work. She says the 138 is closed to Wrightwood due to a fire.
About 1/2 way up to the 2. Does anyone have more info?

STEADY NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS BETWEEN 25 AND 40 MPH WILL BE WIDESPREAD ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA THROUGH SATURDAY.
WIND GUSTS AS HIGH AS 70 MPH ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH AND BELOW THE PASSES AND CANYONS. THE WIND WILL TEMPORARILY DIMINISH SATURDAY NIGHT THEN INCREASE AGAIN LATE SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY.
RELATIVE HUMIDITY WILL BE BELOW 15 PERCENT MOST OF THE TIME IN MOST MOUNTAIN AND VALLEY LOCATIONS THOUGH MONDAY. LOWEST HUMIDITIES SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY WILL BE BELOW 10 PERCENT EACH DAY...WITH NIGHT TIME RECOVERY VERY POOR...ONLY INCREASING TO ABOVE 20 PERCENT FOR A FEW HOURS EACH NIGHT.

Thanks. Didn't notice a thread had begun so thank you for merging my request. Keep us informed please.
We can't even begin to thank this forum enough when we have situations like this.
-
No structures threatened
-
20-30 mph winds
-
Just came up from I 15 and all of power at fwy (Mc Donalds, gas stations etc) is out. They had Hwy 2 closed at Lone Pine, but I was able to come up Lone Pine to WW. 4 fire units passed us while we were waiting to get to Lone Pine.
-
Fire is now a USFS show with County resources being released. The good news is that it now sounds like it is not the threat it was a while back.
-
Thanks to good, quick work on initial attack...some luck and a few breaks thrown in....we dodged another bullet. Still quite a few County units on scene.
-
Good job to all of the agencies involved:
U. S. Forest Service, California Department of Forstry and Fire Protection, and San Bernardino County Fire Department.
:2thumbsup:

Any current status on this?

Crews are still mopping up some portions. There is reason to believe that a familiar pattern is emerging and the "138 arsonist" might be active again. Dispatchers reported that callers saw someone using some sort of incendiary device along the road way. When Div Chief Tim Wessel arrived last night and assumed command, he saw another fire take off 1/2 mile to the East of his location. There have been a number of fires set along Hwy 138 and the lower portion of Hwy 2 over the past five years but no solid leads have ever been developed.
Like the person who set the fatal Esperanza Fire, someone last night wanted the 30-40 mph winds to drive this fire into homes and people. Winds were pushing the fire back down the canyon; towards the freeway. Thankfully, enough resources were able to be put into play to get lines around the fires.
In DC Wessel's opinion, the dusting of snow we got the night before might have made the deciding factor in whether crews would have been able to catch this one or not. Something else to consider is that fire crews not only face the dangers of attacking a fast moving fire with lines down in the area in the dark but the temperature was below freezing. Fighting fire with hoselines means you will get wet and those folks were mighty cold.
Winds and extremely low humidity will be with us again today. We still are a long ways from being out of danger from wild fire.

While driving home last night, around 2:00 AM a fire was just starting on 15N at the 215N interchange. When we were driving past, the first trucks were just setting up their hoses.
It was on the hillside with homes about 50 feet above the fire. Anyone know if homes were damaged?

My understanding was that no homes were lost or damaged
