Title: Approaching storm & 3 day holiday weekend
Post by: Wrightwood on Jan 11, 07, 03:37:36 PM
With the approaching storm and the 3 day holiday weekend, Mountain High Resort and Big Pines is expecting a high volume of traffic and guests starting on 1-13-07 and continuing through 1-15-07. The projected storm is very cold and will allow almost any snow that does fall to stay around for quite some time.

Low teperatures at night wil be Thu-22*, Fri -12*, Sat 12*, & Sun 19*.

That should make for some icy side streets. Hope the plows lower their blades and get that bottom 1" off the streets or it will freeze up and stick around.

Nah!   I love this weather.   I hibernate during summer and stay inside in the a/c.

Everyone go run your town errands tomorrow as the snowplayers are winding up.    Go to the post office, the hardware store, the gas station, make sure you have supplies so you don't have to go to Jensen's.    Rent a movie and return it early so you don't have to share the parking lot with the McGrath's people.

Circle the wagons folks.   Here they come.   ;D   (Actually, I enjoy watching their antics from afar, i.e. webcam).

K's to my cool weather friends FunkyGorilla and Rdnckgrl.   Oops, Rdnckgrl will have to wait until tomorrow because I already gave her a k for making me laugh on the School Shooting thread.    Funky, I wear shorts at home and when I take short walks.   My legs don't like to be confined and I haven't found it cold enough to require anything more than my shorts.

Darn it.   I forgot to get more t.p.    Would hate to have to run to the store for that this weekend.

Is the storm stalled out?   I thought it was supposed to start in the evening and the skies are clear.

I was expecting a reprimand from Funky Gorilla for screwing up the Weather. I got off easy. ;D

The Temperatures didn't go below zero, my typo changing formats in the middle.... It was my birthday and I was bought a few drinks also.....although I took a laser thermometor for engines and took a wind chill reading of -04* with about a 15mph wind last night.Brrrrr.

I felt the same thing when I walked to my mother in law's this morning at 6:30 this morning and stayed outside shoveling her walkway.    It is a glorious day and makes me glad to be alive.

If today's visitors are indicative of the people coming this weekend we are in for a pleasant surprise.    No one speeding through town or honking at you for trying to make a left and holding up traffic.   Even the people at the rental shops were quiet and orderly.

I've got my supplies and will hunker down to some fun family time.  Angelwolf, these cold days are the times I wish I had warm soft animals to snuggle.   I may have to borrow one.

Happy B-day wwpt!  And Stitches, I am jealous you have A/C in your home.

Back to topic.... I am glad mthigh has to boast they are expecting a big crowd, when in all actuality it's the snow players that see the white mountain caps and come up and clog the roads.

Sorry mthigh, you can't take all the credit for the busy weekend in Wrightwood.

Thanks...I just hate all those birthday drinks. Next time I'm not telling anyone.

It was a crisp, chilly beautiful morning up here today. Even the snow was light and fluffy....I didn't even have to shovel it - I swept it off the deck with a broom. A dry, light powder.

I'll bet those people up at the ski slope are having a glorious, great riding day.  And I bet the view from on top of the high speed chair lift is fantastic. It was so clear this morning.

I can see that Hwy 2 at Desert Front is at a crawl going downhill.  Is there an accident out there?

I cam thru there about 2:30pm or so... wall to wall people, and gridlock in both directions.

The good news, is that I saw about 3 or 4 CHP units, and about 2 or 3 towtrucks, with cars on their beds. Looks like they might actually be towing some people who parked a little "too close" to the "no parking signs". I only noticed them doing this in vicinity of Mtn High East's entrance, but if they are towing a few people's cars, at least its better than 0% enforcement.

PS: Plenty-o-people walking on Jackson Lake today, too.

Thank you....At the Caltrans Safety Task Force Meeting last Wednesday, I think we all tried to impress upon the Caltrans representatives and Sharon Runner's representative that we need enforcement of the exsiting laws to keep traffic moving.  We suggested to Dennis Green that this would be the perfect 3 day weekend to do a drive through. (or fly over)

I forgot to mention, that I'm still not sure there's enough "no parking" signs up there. Yeah, I know, most people are ignoring them anyway, but I do think if they placed more of them closer together, or went the extra step, and starting using barricades or cones in the no parking zones, that things would be a little better.

I wonder how many of the cars have their Adventure Pass. I saw some, in windshields, but I'm sure a good majority of cars didn't have them. More enforcement of Passes would be nice, too.

Oh well.. some progress is better than no progress. Its never going to be perfect.. .let's face it. Hwy 2 & the whole Mtn High area just ain't designed for that much traffic.

Bob there has been a good amount of effort made in the gridlock situation this year.

The Wrightwood Fire Safe Council sponsored two meetings in 2006 that got together both Caltrans districts, both CHP districts, SB County Fire, LA County Fire, Mt High, LA County Roads, some representatives from political offices, ANF and others. These meetings were followed up by a private meeting between Mountain High, CHP and Caltrans that has resulted in a cooperative effort to be more proactive when gridlock was anticipated.

Many solutions have been discussed and some have been put into place and are working. This forum topic was started after I received an email from Mountain High, that they were anticipating a large crowd this weekend.

That email was a result of these meetings - as trigger points have been established to make things happen before hand. Different signage has been planned and is in the works from the last that I heard. CHP and tow trucks were indeed working the Big Pines area today because they knew ahead of time and are included on the special email trigger point list.

All emergency services were pushed to their limits today. The number of calls across the desert for water salvage work was tremendous. I doubt Wrightwood Fire personnel spend more than 5-10 minutes in quarters all day!

Thanks CHP, Caltrans, ANF, SB County Fire, Mountain High, Ski Patrol, LA County Sheriff and everyone else that helped make today a little safer for all of us.
