I think most of the snow has melted already.  However, I think Mt. High has snow play area for families... you might want to call them to find out for sure.  Just please don't play in someone's yard like a lot of people do when they come up here... it's just disrespectful.  Very nice of you to inquire first.  Have a great weekend.

Unfortunately there's very little snow on the ground - less than half an inch in sparse areas - at least by me.  You might want to consider the tubing at Mt. High.  I hear it's a lot of fun for kids.  You should check the Mt. High website to make sure it's open, but I'm pretty sure it will be this weekend.

yurtis,
There's not much natural snow in Wrightwood and if you could wait a few weeks there's a good chance we'll have some. I doubt the kids could find enough to build a snowman  :'(

If you bring the kids up and end up snow playing near Jackson Lake please do not let them go out on the ice as it's very dangerous.

Have a great safe time!

Don't forget to plan your drive accordingly:

While out on Patrol warning about the need for Adventure Passes, checking camp fire pits and warning people about the dangers of walking on the ice at Jackson Lake, Toolman and I came upon a group of snowplayers that had found the "premo" spot.  In all my years of "stomping" around the area, I never knew it existed.

While many will park off of Hwy 2 and brave some very steep runs next to the road, this spot is well placed away from traffic and offers a long run without "break neck" or dangerous speeds.  Even younger ones were having a blast.

We ran into a group of about 10 cars and both of us were very impressed with this snowplay site.  There wasn't alot of snow at the time yet it offered a nice run.  With deeper snow the run would be even longer.  I doubt there is much snow left there now, but in the weeks to come this would be the spot to go.  Several we talked to, who did have their Adventure Passes by the way, said they had been coming to this spot for years.

Here's the spot.  Don't tell anybody or it will get too crowded.   ;D

From the Big Pines Station you start heading down Big Pines Hwy, as if you're going to go to Jackson Lake.  The first large turnout on your left is the spot.  It's only a few hundred feet from the intersection of Hwy 2 and Big Pines Hwy.  Below is this little canyon that rests between Hwy 2 and Big Pines Hwy, is easy to get to and very safe. An easy trail takes you from the turnout to the top of the run.

Check it out.  Again it is away from the traffic on the road and is very safe.  It's the best spot I've ever seen for sleding or tubing without paying for it. (Mt High "North" does offer excellent tubing, but it does cost a fee)

But remember, Adventure Passes are required when parked along side the road in the Angeles Forest.

yurtis - thank you for asking before coming.   I can't believe this thread was read over 130 times and you didn't get more karma.    I gave you one for respecting our town and the residents.     There is not a whole lot of snow around town.    What there is is pretty thin or dirty from the plows.

The site RobertW mentioned sounds interesting but as he says, it requires an adventure pass.    You can get them in town.    Public restrooms are between the banks and we have several neat restaurants to get food.

Have fun and be safe.

Doesn't look like any precipitation will hit the area in the next two weeks.  :-\

Yurtis,
Yes Robert W. explains this location well. While we patrol the area to keep it safe for snow play we both recommend this location. However an adventure pass is required and you are subject to citation. There is not enough natural snow up here to pull over anywhere (again subject to adventure pass) to make it worth the drive. However, The Mtn. High north complex is located at the Table mtn. turn off which goes north of the Big Pine & SR-2 intersection, turn right and go up the hill. Parking is free and it is a very good organized area for kids to play-tube etc. for a small fee for all day. There is food available and a cozy place for the parents to unwind.

I need to apologize to everyone out there.  It's my fault we don't have many snow play areas right now; and yes, it's my fault we haven't had hardly any snow this season.  I'll take the blame.  'Sorry.  I just knew I shouldn't have purchased that new snow blower.  If I'd just stayed with the snow shovel, we would've had six feet by now.  Once again.  Please accept my apology.

I think I'm gonna sell it to someone over in Malibu.  What the heck!  They've already had more snow than we've had; and they'll probably get a lot more use out of it.

Or here in New Mexico!  We've had a storm every weekend since before Christmas.  I have 2+ feet in my front yard and it is snowing right now....  If I can ever figure out how to use my new digital camera, I'll take a picture.

You will need photos before selling the snow on ebay  ;)

I was sitting at Denver International Airport about a year ago, trying to get back to Kansas for work, and it was snowing heavily.

The parade of those snowblowers was about 50 vehicles long!  I guess when you have miles of runway and taxiway to clear, you get out the big toys!

Snow players have parked in my neighbor's driveway (my neighbors and not home now) and are having their picnic lunch there - they have a dog running loose, which is driving my dogs crazy.  The kids are running and jumping on the neighbor's rocks - what's wrong with these people?  Their mountain experience is at a residence?  sheesh

It's going to be our first time heading to Wrightwood.  Trying to see if we can get some suggestions on areas where the best places we can play in the snow with my 2 yr old twins.  Thanks in advance for everyone's suggestions and help!

Inspiration Point on the North side of Hwy 2 has proved to be especially nice with the amount of snow we have.

All levels of difficulty, from the mundane for very small children to a long and wild run for older ones who don't know enough to fear injury.   ;D

Pay close attention to the weather as we do have a storm due this weekend.
If we do get snowfall on Saturday be prepared for winter driving conditions and that would include having tire chains with you.

Have a great time and make sure to come back on the forum and tell us how your experience was.

Here's a link with the NWS forecast for Wrightwood.

Two Saturdays ago, my stepdaughter and her hubby brought their 2 kids, ages 3-1/2 and 5, up here to play in the snow.  (They live in Simi Valley.)  I directed us up to Grassy Hollow, which is about 1/2 mile west of Inspiration Point on Hwy 2.  We found great spots for little kids to sled down.  As RobertW mentioned above, you can find spots for most levels of difficulty at this location also.  Very safe, and the kids had a blast.  Traffic was not bad at all.  You do need an adventure pass to park there, luckily, I remembered to take my annual one with us, since we were in their minivan.

Welcome to Wrightwood  ;D

If it's your first visit, you may will not want to go home.  ;)

I hope your kids have long lasting memory of their visit. Stop by the FS station at Big Pines, located at the intersection of Hwy2 and Big Pines Hwy, and you can get directions to the areas mentioned.

Be safe and be sure the kids have a clear path away from trees.

There is still plenty of snow at the higher elevations that were mentioned in this thread. We are getting snow now that is light and fluffy - make for a soft landing for your daughters!

This snow is supposed to continue through tomorrow (early afternoon), so come prepared with dry clothes, mittens, hats, etc. Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Also ensure that you have chains or cables for the vehicle (depending on vehicle type) or 4wd.  I even have cables for the rear wheels of my 4wd Sport Trac!

Extra food, water, TP, plastic bags for trash, etc.  With the snow late today, and quite possibly overnight, check the road conditions before you leave, and LEAVE EARLY to come up here.  Sometimes after a snowfall, the snowplayers/skiers/boarders come up at first light, and traffic can be heavy as early as 8AM.

But do come up, have a great time, and let us know how you did!

Thanks again, everyone for all the helpful advice!  We had a blast in the snow and even stayed late enough to catch the brief snowfall around late afternoon.  We ended up going snow tubing and played in the snow a bit around the area.  It looked wonderful yesterday with a lot of the powder still fresh on the pines.

Hi!

We're planning a day trip to do some snow play.  Where is a good spot to go without bothering the locals ? I know mt high doesn't allow the snow play.  It was recommended to just stop at the hardware store to buy some sleds and a daily Forrest pass  and drive up the 2.....

Any advice is appreciated ...
Thanks

Be cautious near any frozen areas such as Jackson Lake.

Rany - Not sure when you wanted to come, but I don't believe there is enough snow on the ground for sledding just yet. We only got about 4" here in town, and not much more up the road.
