Just for clarification, is this at the top of Lone Pine before you get into the residential area? Just want to be sure because I have someone coming this way tonight or tomorrow morning.
I guess they'll have to go around on the fwy, thru Phelan and then up, since 138 isn't open yet.

Just got a report from Clint that he had to help someone who tried to cross the wash in a minivan and got stuck. He reports that he is covered in mud up to his knees. When I can reach him again will ask if people are able to get to Wright Mountain Rd from Lone Pine.
Just talked to Clint and he is able to get to Wright Mountain, but he said Lone Pine is blocked with mud and debris at Slover Canyon. He also said the minivan is stuck in the wash and filling with mud. It is going to be a tough commute folks.
-
I just came from there, got out of my car and sunk into mud up to my knees. It is like quick-sand.
Be careful out there!
-
I don't know where Slover Canyon is. Can you come up from the freeway and make it to Wright Mountain Road to get into town?
If so, what road would you take to get to it?
-
I think LPC is closed at the bottom KW. It was horrible up to East Cyn at 4:30pm

Slover Canyon is just before you get to the top curves. It looks like they are closing Lone Pine at the 138. CHP is there waiting for the county to put up the road closed signs.
-
Any chance of opening up 138 to Hwy 2 to allow access to the town. If not, it is a long drive around.
I will be coming up early tomorrow morning.
-
Any chance of opening up 138 to Hwy 2 to allow access to the town. If not, it is a long drive around.
Now that the rains have stopped, I'm sure the county will have it scooped out, and re-opened long before tomorrow morning.
-
It has just reported that county is cleaning up Lone Pine and also cleaning the mud off of Hwy 2. So hopefully if we don't get any more rain, they will be able to open Lone Pine before too long.
-
Tow truck is attempting to get the van out of the wash!
-
Has anyone heard anything regarding the 5ft mud slides on Lone Pine? I heard that traffif was being stopped to and from Wrightwood...
-
Car is out, wash is being plowed.

Thanks to Clint for helping the driver out of the vehicle

Just went to check if Lone Pine was open yet (not the wash but the other slide area). They are working on it and say it will be open in about "30 minutes or so." My husband parked his car on the other side of the slide and a very nice lady in an all wheel drive vehicle brought him home. We're waiting for the slide to be cleared so we can bring our car home. Thank you to that very nice lady who brought my husband home for dinner.

I just left there and its sure to be cleaned out tonight. They made lots of progress while watching. It was really cool to see the plow pushing the mud and then when it reaches the edge of the wash starts a cascade of mud into a mudfall. Thank god for our new way back home when Lone Pine closes.

Rennman is on his way home from the Ontario Airport, (just left). Can someone that is in the know please post as soon as LPC is open? He's going to call when he gets closer to see if the status has changed.
Thanks!

Hey, Angelwolf. You caught the rear view of my two teens in your pictures. They really enjoy checking out the wash when it floods. My son felt sorry for the tow truck driver who had to go into the mud to retrieve the van.

-
I got many pics of kids playing throwing rocks into the wash.. Which one is he, I will send you some pics.. :) they were having fun!
-
Can Lone pine be traveled if you go past the closed signs or is the road closed before you get to the wash? My son is on his way up. In the past the closed signs went up whenever the wash past East Canyon was blocked.
Does this make sense? If my son goes around the closed signs, can he get to East Canyon?
-
Angelwolf, my son is the one in the striped shirt with the skateboard. My daughter is next to him in the sweatshirt.
Chatty Cathy, There were 2 mudslides. One at the upper esses and the other at the wash. We were just able to bring our car home thru the first mudslide at the essess. It was mostly clear but a little slushy still so anyone going thru there should be careful. We live down East Canyon. It looks like your son will be able to get home if he goes around the closed signs.
-
Lone Pine Canyon at the wash is now open. I was one of the unfortunate ones that coming home, had to turn around at the top esses because I was told they were turning everyone around. This was at about 5:00, because of that I didn't get home until 6 because I had to go through Phelan.
-
Luckily my son got to Lone Pine right as they were taking the signs down.
-
Hello all! I made it home, but since we didn't know if LPC was open, I took the long way home through the Cajon Pass, 395, Phelan Road and Beekley.
Looks like I just missed our thunderstorm. Coincidentally, as the plane was leaving Denver last night, we just missed another thunderstorm by under a minute. I saw a lightning strike about 5 miles west of the runway, as the plane was climbing out.
More rain please, but in a less violent form, and much longer duration...
-
The rain is really coming down right now. It should only be a matter of time before LPC is closed again. :(
-
Is it just me or is it silly to risk your car and your life to save a few minutes by driving through obviously flowing mud, rock and water? People have been watching too many Hummer commercials.
-
Any news on LPC?
-
Any news on LPC?
Closed... take Wright Mountain Rd
-
Closed - huge boulders in the way. And now, of course, another idiot's truck is stuck! Can't believe people think they can make it through.
Now I am thinking - instead of messing with Hwy 2, how about a bridge over the wash?!! Oh wait, that just makes sense!
-
Is that Helicopter looking for someone, something? ie: down the wash, for fires ???
-
They are looking for reported hang glider forced down by the storm and seen in the wash alive. Has not been found as of now.
-
Hang glider in this weather?
-
That was the report.
-
Here are some photos from today's mudslide around 3:30 p.m....
According to one eyewitness I spoke with, the big boulder shown in the 4th photo down was bouncing in the air as it was making it's way towards the stuck truck. The truck was pushed out of the way, and the boudler came to rest. Lucky for the guy in the truck. The guy also said you could hear the boulder bouncing down the wash.....

Wow quite a bit different than yesterday, there were no big boulders.
Thanks for the pics HB.
I was soaking wet after trying to pull everything in from my yard sale during the rain. Taking down an EAsy UP in a pouring rain windstorm is VERY hard. LOL

Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles...driving that truck?

I am just curious why no one has mentioned the HEAVY TRAFFIC on Orchard, Lusanne & Zermatt due to the wash closure on Lone Pine today. Didn't it bother anyone else?
A big thanks to San Bernandino for those lovely "road detour" signs that caused the heavy caravan of cars driving ALL DAY LONG on Zermatt. What was that about anyway...never seen signs put up when the wash was out before. Are detour sign legal in a residential area?
I had to go inside my house and hide out - all I did while outside working was give directions to out of area folks & watch people speeding up and down the street - bummer to bummer with rain and all.
"mmmmm, why didn't those signs detour "right on East Canyon (sorry)....RIGHT on "PACIFIC CREST"- right on Wright Mountain to Hwy 2......this is bull!
Can a petition be done or something so the above streets don't get hit like this for the next wash closure? And we all know there will be another wash out.
Absolutely, ridiculous! This cause for one unpleasant day for sure~
-
hey locarno was like a fwy and they drive fast!
-
Batnett and Angelwolf,
Now you know what life has ALWAYS been like for residents on Sheep Creek. You will only have to live with it a day or two. :-\
-
Can a petition be done or something so the above streets don't get hit like this for the next wash closure? And we all know there will be another wash out.
If you find anything out let us know. I'm sure there are a lot of people out here who would also like to keep cars from driving on their streets.
It's so anoying to have cars go by my house all day long.
-
We also live on a residential street and have been living like hermits all summer due to Sheepcreek being the unofficial detour. And the traffic is not going into town to spend money. Yesterday I actually ran in the house when someone stopped to ask for directions. After awhile it just gets annoying. LPC is still closed this morning. For some reason Sheepcreek never had a sign installed saying "Closed To Thru Traffic". We could use one right now because traffic is still trying to get through. How did LPC at Hwy 2 rate by getting two signs installed saying "Road Closed"? That is stretching the truth. I can only hope that the wash is closed all weekend. Sorry East Canyon but now you know.

Lots of pictures of our flash flooding yesterday:

Is LPC open to get to 15 if we take Wright Mountain Rd. from 2 up to the top part of LPC and then down?
Liz
-
That's me with the dog (and I still have the dog - the owners have not returned home yet and the dog was afraid of the lighting and thunder) - and my daughter Tracy with the blue umbrella. We were walking down Pine hoping to find the dog's owner. We were drenched by the time we got to the music festival.
Is this in the paper or just online?

Liz,
I think LPC is open to the 15 via Wright Mountain.

Hey ChattyCathy.. you are now almost famous here in the San Fernando Valley. The Daily News had the picture of you and the dog on Page 3 of the main (A) section of the Sunday paper.... but they identified the person in the picture as Tracy W. ....oh well, almost your 15 minutes of fame.

Channel 2 News had pics of the Truck Stuck and said thanks to Robin Hallman (?) of Wrightwood for sending them in.

Was there a raffle to get your picture in the paper? Must have been- that's why Chatty is in so many of them....she ALWAYS wins.....
-
You're kidding! San Fernando? Has anyone seen the Sun today? Or in another paper? I'm without a car today, so I can't check the local papers. Both Tracy and I spelled out our names for the photographer - but that's okay - he asked me if Tracy was my sister.

Here we go again.
-
We just watched the road get washed out again.
-
I can't ever remember seeing Sheep Creek raging from our deck. Looking out today you could see it and really hear it loudly. Its in the middle of the picture, dirty brown so it doesn't look pretty.

This picture shows the river flow almost to Phelan (zig zagging in the middle).

This is the area just north of Hwy 2. Quite a wide area of water flowing.

Is Lone Pine closed?
-
Check link

-
Yes, Lone Pine Canyon@Sheep Creek Wash and Thrush@Heath Creek Wash are closed. No county tractor activity going on at either.
-
So can folks can still take Wright Mountain Road to get home from down the hill?
-
The signs say closed but its clear from 138 to east cyn
-
When I was talking to Angelwolf, about 3 o'clock, she said the only way in or out of East Canyon was Wright Mountain Rd. That Lone Pine was blocked in both directions from there. I've heard nothing since that would change that. I'm guessing that the only way to get off the hill is hwy 2. Sorry :( If anyone know different please say so.
-
You can get down the hill using LPC.
-
Haven't been up to check, when I was at the wash after the downpour there was a sign at LPC/East Cyn saying closed going down the hill.
I have heard the dozers working all afternoon. They were awesome cleaning the debris on Locarno and East Cyn!
GREAT JOB guys!!! These guys are working so hard to get us going let's applaud them!!! Offered them some water but they didn't want it.....
Almost had a flood in our downstairs, we had to dig areas in the upper yard to release the water. We have drains but the water was too fast for it I guess! Whew..... Lots of sweeping the water to get it away from the door....
Hope no one had any damage....
-
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k40/rdnckgrl78/boulder.jpg)
This is one of the boulders blocking LPC at the wash.
-
That boulder in that picture is about as tall as I am about 5-6 feet tall. They were working on Lone Pine last time I was down there, about an hour ago. The bridge at Thrush is completely thrashed, both the guardrails are gone. If this exact mudslide happened yesterday on Lone Pine Canyon with the same debris that came down today. That truck that was in the road would have probably been taken out by that boulder in the picture, or by the 3 or 4 other large boulders that are in the wash.
I was over at my friend's house off of Lodgepole, it rained so hard his backyard turned into a lake, there was only about 5 cm. between the water and his back door. This was a bad rainstorm, and the worst part is we are supposed to have more tomorrow, and next weekend also.
-
My husband has video footage of the wash surging...we just don't have the ability to transfer it onto the computer. Our video camera is a few years old and to my knowledge there isn't a cable capable of doing the transfer. :'(
-
What kind of camcorder is it, does it take a memory card, video cassette, or DVD? I know :offtopic:
-
A little cassette..its a Canon ES8400v 8mm recorder
-
I don't see anything indicating that you can "easily" convert the video to a PC format.
http://www.camcordersonsale.com/8mm-camcorder.html
Arghhhh! I'll bet the video is great!!!
I remember very clearly in 1969 when 5 to 10 ton boulders were rolling over Hwy 2 at Sheep Creek.
Very few people can really appreciate the power or water.
-
rdnckgrl78 I should be able to transfer it.
Send me a PM.
-
Was standing taking pictures at the wash when a man and his two little kids came up and asked were the storm was i said its over. He had driven up from LA to see the rain. He said he tried hwy 2 but it was closed then went thru palmdale/lancaster to wrightwood to see the storm. This is the type of person that gets in trouble and wonders what they did wrong when the rescue people have to save them. I am just amazed.
-
Just came back from seeing how the Thrush wash was looking and I guess someone couldn't read the ROAD CLOSED sign and tried to pass it anyway. Well they're stuck in the middle of the mud, Looked like a beautiful Mercedes to me. ???
-
One of the things I love best about Wrightwood is what happens after Sheep Creek washes out. I'm on Easter so have often experienced this. Half the town from both sides of the wash show up to take pictures, visit, exclaim with amazement, share flood stories. One teenager was walking out on the mud flow and sank down to her knees -- if she were in danger 25 people would have gone in after her, but as it is she was laughing as she squished back. Once she got up on solid road we all clapped and cheered. And I met two perfectly lovely people and had a great time talking to them. Oh -- and my 11-year-old had such fun that he exclaimed, "I love Wrightwood."
Me too.

does anyone know how the old ridge road is holding up. i am suppose to come down from the ridge today and do a hike up sheep creek wash this afternoon at around 2:08 pm. if anyone wants to join me in a hike you can pm me.

Per County Roads Lone Pine is open between Orchard and Sheep Creek.
-
-
I am thankful that we have such a capable clean-up crew, but at around 3:30 a.m., I was wondering, can the Caterpillar operator turn OFF the back- up BEEP BEEP sound?????
-
Is lone pine open now by either sheep creek or wright mountain road?
-
Yes LPC is open via Sheep Creek. I just went down and came back up. There is still dirt on the road so be cautious when driving.
-
Thrush is also open now.
-
Thank you!
-
Why is it on a holiday weekend, mother nature does everything she can to keep us indoors, but on the last day of the holiday she doesn't do anything just so we can't come up with some excuse at work that "oh the wash is flooded, can't make it to work?"

-
What day was that, Wrightwood? I went to the fire station during Saturday's downpour - we were in desperate need of sand bags. The station was all locked up - it appeared no one was there - must have all been out on call. And there were no sandbags outside, filled or unfilled.
-
Swing by sometime this week and pick up sandbags. They don't leave them out as folks just take the whole bundle. During heavy weather, you can expect the station to be locked with the crew out and engaged.
-
Lone Pine is closed at Sheep Creek Wash. Looks like they are grading to get ready for the next storm. Of course, there are no signs posted in advance so cars are driving up all the way to the wash, then have to turn around and go back the same way, and go to Wright Rd.
-
Roy Montry (responsible for our local roads) reported at the MAC meeting Monday that they needed to inspect the grates before they could clean out underneath. They were concerned that there might have been some damage. Since a storm is expected they moved up their inspection. If the grates were damaged, they would have to close the road because they may not be able to replace them. If you see the road closed tonight that will mean there is damage.
-
truly what do they think those little grates will do when boulders bigger than cars come down the wash? why do the grates even matter?
-
The original design allowed for a small dozer to drive through the space to cclear it. The grates are removeable to allow the concrete culvert under the grates to be dug out.
-
When the county put in the grate system they anticipated that they would remove the gates then run a dozer through the cement channel to keep it cleared.
From what I've observed the county began leaving the grates in place and plowed over and around the area and do not remove the grates on a regular basis. I would think that getting the grates to fit back into the concrete channel now that the concrete has been damaged could be difficult if not impossible.
(looks like Clint beat me to the punch)
