Darren was a riot on patrol and at Cal State.  There never was a time when he walked into class with anything but a grin on his face.  And no matter how hard I studied and how much he didn't study (and went skiing over the weekend), he ALWAYS got far better grades than I did!

This is so unreal, and I can't even begin to imagine how this feels for the family.  Just know, that our families thoughts and prayers go to each one of the Coffey family.  Darren will always hold a special place in my heart, and I smile thinking he left us doing something he loved.  Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Hi everyone,

I am writing a special tribute story about Darren Coffey in tomorrow's Daily Press.

Another reporter is working on the story about Mike. If anyone would like to share a special memory about Darren in the story, please PM me with your phone number and I'll call you as soon as possible.

Thanks, Veronica

Darren was such a sweet guy. Someone you always wanted to be around because he had such good and kind energy. I still cant believe it...The doctors think that his death happened upon impact and I really hope that is true.

Saturday night the Yodeler shut down to the public and held a memorial for Darren and Mike. All tips were donated to the family to help pay for medical costs or the helicopter evacuation....whatever they wanted to use it for. I have never seen so many $100 and $20 dollar bills in that tip jar before! Chester thinks they raised a good amount of money for the families.

A really nice thing was that a couple from out of town were in there finishing up their meal as we were starting to arrive and gave $500 cash to the families. These people had never met Darren but saw the sadness and wanted to help. They were so sweet and the lady gave me the best hug and I cried with a complete stranger. It was the same kindness that I knew in Darren. It was a neat moment.

Having worked and played a bit in these mountains and knowing how finicky the weather is, I'd like to express my sadness that Darren Coffey couldn't escape from these dire conditions.  He sounds like a wonderful soul and was doing what he loved.  Condolences to this family and friends from a northern neighbor.

I will always consider Darren my friend. He was by far one of the nicest people I knew in WW.
I could go a year without seeing him and when I did he treated me like he "missed a friend".    There was always a big hug from him when we saw each other.

I can’t believe I won’t see him again
I totally can’t believe this happened
Wrightwoodians….You are all lucky to have each other.
Over the last 12 years of my relationship with WW I do know the town comes together when needed. I am too far away to be there now.
Thank you Wrightwood and again, thank you John for the forum.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families.
We are emailing for information regarding McKay and Coffey service. We want to make sure that we have plenty of fresh flowers and plants for both services and was asking if there is anyway to send a message out to the visitors of the website to call us before the services for making sure we have everything for them.

Darren Bodie Coffey wasn't ordered to be a mentor and environmental teacher for at-risk youth in an Urban Youth Conservation Corps(UYCC); he volunteered.

That spirit typified Darren who enjoyed being around a group of tough looking boys and who wanted to make a difference.

"He told me that he wanted to be part of the “Corps” family and do more things with the boys” said Bobby Vega, San Bernardino National Forest Association UYCC Program Manager.  “I told him that he was already part of Corps family and that the boys really looked up to him” Vega added.

On one Saturday afternoon all of the boys were sitting around Lytle Creek Ranger Station talking about things in their lives they were thankful for…a couple boys turned to look at Darren and said “they were thankful he was there”.  Darren smiled.  "He believed in what he was doing."

This is a tragic loss of a genuinely good man and everyone is finding this very hard to accept.

Bobby has posted pictures that were taken on Saturday January.19, 2008 in Lytle Creek , CA while doing a work project with Darren and Henry Herrera ( U.S Forest Service) and the Urban Youth Conservation Corps.

He has also posted a link to a video on youtube which includes Darren working with the urban youth.

These photos and the video can be seen at www.bobbygvegafoundation.org  Supporters page.

With our condolences, bobby

January 30, 2008

Darren’s passing has touched me deeply for so many reasons:

I had deep admiration for Darren because he was a truly noble young man. He was in my mind,  the epitome of what I like to see in other young men and women. Besides having studied hard to reach his goal, he chose an honorable profession. He did, as Randy Striplin says; leave the world a better place. He was well-liked because he was pleasant, respectful, helpful, kind and exuded a quiet humility-yet he was strong. When I hear of young people dying of a drug overdose, gang shootout, or shot while committing a crime, or drunk driving; the consolation that first comes to my mind is that Darren did not go from any of the above.  And the second is that he was doing something he loved. The sun caressed his face that day- I imagine.

I’ve made a crude attempt to translate one of my favorite Spanish language poems…..yes, he was loved. I did too.

Bea

EN PAZ
IN PEACE
Artifex vitae artifex sui

Muy cerca de mi ocaso, yo te bendigo, Vida,
Very near to my sunset, I bless you, Life

porque nunca me diste ni esperanza fallida,
because you never gave me nor failed hope,

ni trabajos injustos, ni pena inmerecida;
nor unjust labors, nor undeserved sorrows;
Porque veo al final de mi rudo camino
Because I see at the end of this crude road,

que yo fui el arquitecto de mi propio destino;
that I was the arquitect of my own destiny;

que si extraje la mieles o la hiel de las cosas,
if I extracted the nectar or bile from things,

fue porque en ellas puse hiel o mieles sabrosas:
t’was because, I placed the bile or sweet nectars in things;

cuando planté rosales coseché siempre rosas.
when I planted roses, I always harvested roses.

...Cierto, a mis lozanías va a seguir el invierno:
….True, winter will follow my exuberant youth:

 ¡mas tú no me dijiste que mayo fuese eterno!
Tho you never promised that May would be eternal!

Hallé sin duda largas las noches de mis penas;
I found, without doubt, eternal the evenings of my sorrows;

mas no me prometiste tan sólo noches buenas;
But you didn’t promise, only quiet nights;

y en cambio tuve algunas santamente serenas...
And In turn I had [some] saintly serene…..

Amé, fui amado, el sol acarició mi faz.
I loved, I was loved, the sun caressed my face.

¡Vida, nada me debes! ¡Vida, estamos en paz
Life!, you owe me nothing, Life! We are at peace.

Darren was truly one of the best men I have ever known.  He will always be loved and missed.  To his family, I am so sorry for your loss.  Thank you for sharing Darren with the rest of us.  He made the world a better place and that can't be said of many people.

Last night a few of Darren's buddies were selling remembrance bracelets for $5. Each bracelet had a tag on it that read:
"For every 10 bracelets sold 1.145 sq. feet of rainforest land will be preserved along with the planting of a tree. The trees planted will provide sanctuary to monarch butterflies along with providing cleaner air. In tribute and honor to Darren Coffey. Your beliefs will live on through your friends and family. We love you Darren."

If any of you would like to contribute to the family or buy a bracelet visit www.darrencoffey.com

This is such a special way to remember Darren. It contributes to nature in his honor which is something that would have pleased him so much.
