I know very little about Uber.
I put in Uber Wrightwood into Google and it popped up with this site that gives fares.

Snowbird: I'm not sure if you're looking to use Uber for a ride or for a job.

If a ride: I pay someone that works for me $10/hour and his gas. My rides have been for weddings and funerals in L.A. So, there are hours of down time while I attend those events. He's on the clock and I pay for his lunch and a movie. Max round-trip for that is around $200 depending on how many hours I stay. Not much more than for a one-way Uber charge for LAX.

If for a job: Uber just lost a case before the Labor Board and their drivers are now considered employees. At least for now. The post here by onhands doesn't say much for that company. cheryl o7o

I've been using Uber in the beach areas and it's great. Drivers are nice, cars are kept clean. Don't forget to rate your driver when you get were your are going. You can't call for another car until you've rated your most recent driver. Be aware that the drivers rate their passengers as well. So don't go getting drunk and puling in the car, don't tell them how to drive and only give them advice on a route if they ask. Don't be a backseat driver, just sit back and enjoy. Three times cheaper than a cab also. When you launch the app on your phone you have choices of what car you want, and you can see real time on the screen were they are. Once you select your car and request a ride, you can watch them real time on the map within the app.

No gratuities required, it's in the fee.

Snow bird, the fare will be displayed when you request the ride. You can accept or decline. The fair can and will change depending on area, and prime time. What ever the fair is, it will be cheaper than a cab.

Uber is the death spiral of neoliberal capitalism. It's the Walmart of transportation. It's the adjunct college professor on food stamps. It's the factory worker hired back at his old job through a temp agency with no benefits and half the pay. In other words, it's the future. I'd walk to to LA before I got a ride with Uber.

It's not the future, it's the present. The trick in today's economy is to have a skill that 1) not just anyone can do, 2) one that's not replaceable by a robot or other technology.

Taxi and bus companies are now learning what buggy whip craftsmen and owners of livery stables learned 100 years ago. Technology in a free economy is always a double-edged sword, a boon for many, a calamity for few.

My son drives for Uber and has had pleasant experiences with them. I would guess that like all companies you have happy former workers and unhappy ones as shown by the link above. It really works better in populated areas where you need to get around and there are multiple drivers. I have used Lyft in San Fransisco and it was pleasant as well.

I know someone who's an UBER driving in San Luis Obispo. He said that he can set the time he wants to work whenever he wants - just knowing that he will need to be available for a ride that might take 5 minutes or two hours. The drivers are told where to pick up, but don't know where they are going until they arrive - this is to keep drivers from declining short trips. He says when he's "available" he gets a text that someone needs a ride, and he has 15 seconds to accept before it goes to the next closest driver. Interesting stuff-- And some people can decline using him if they want, since he has a small car and someone with 5 people or lots of luggage may want a larger vehicle. He doesn't deal with any money - all is done through the UBER website. He gets a check direct deposited into his account every Thursday.

My concern in using a Uber is whether the driver has the proper driving license and insurance. Without both in hand, the Uber driver's personal driving insurance wont cover the damage of an accident and passengers' medical expenses. The driver needs a commercial license and commercial insurance. Of course you can sue the driver personally for damages but I wouldnt expect much or else he or she wouldnt be a driver to begin with.

Its my understanding that Uber is NOT a transportation company but a company that provides a "network" matching drivers and riders. Its sort of an eHarmony or Facebook with wheels. Just recently one driver was found to be an "employee" of Uber. All other drivers are independent contractors. Many governments and taxi companies have protested against Uber, alleging that its use of unlicensed, crowd-sourced drivers was unsafe and illegal. None of the drivers have received special training other than how to use their smartphone Uber app.

I can say their insurance, license, and registration have to be up to date and valid before they can drive for Uber. I do not think having commercial insurance is a requirement for Uber but would probably be good for the driver.
