This is great! Our little dog is a prime candidate. Do you know if they will microchip animals other than dogs and cats? Horses? Big Horn Sheep? etc.

I asked about coyotes and got a real laugh from the gal.

We did talk about other pets and made a decision to stick with dogs and cats this time.

This pet Micro Chipping concept for emergencies is something the Wrightwood Disaster Preparedness Team put together.

I have both of my dogs micro-chipped through Avid. I only found out last month that my German Shorthair that we adopted two years ago never got changed into our names. So be careful and don't assume your information was transferred or correct. Call to make sure.

Are they using avid micro chips?

I have never heard of 24PetWatch before... I have to look in to it. Because if a shelter scans a dog and it has an Avid, Home Again, etc microchip they call up avid, home again, etc. So I'm hope that 24 pet watch updates the avid, home again, etc data base that they use. But Avid will only let the current owner update the info... I am totally confused about that system and will call up avid and 24 pet watch and see if they update each other.

If it helps I was told by the people from Victor Valley Animal Protective League that they use a universal scanner that reads all of them.

After doing some further research it appears that 24PetWatch is the only one of the three that is using an ISO technology systems : AVID, HomeAgain, and 24PetWatch

The International Standards Organization (ISO) developed global standards for microchip technology to resolve issues of compatibility among technologies.

Here's a good review by the American Human Society.

A little more about ISO standards:

We have been in the quality control field since the mid 80's. When ISO quality standards first began appearing it was very confusing as military and commercial quality control standards had been around for a long time. The big problem was that there was no standardization within our country - let alone the world.

Parts could be manufactured in the US to (lets say) a Lockhead standard then shipped overseas. Guess what - many times those parts would not work because the standards used in the foreign country were different than Lockhead standards.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards. ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 157 countries.

What's important here is that a transition appears to be taking place and the odds are the ISO standard will be adopted by all companies in the field that produce Micro Chips for pets.

The pet micro chipping will be near the big entrance to the County Yard. (The end where the Pine Needle & Green Waste Drop Off is taking place)

Got 2 of my dogs microchipped today and it was only 20$ each!! Good deal. Well...maybe not so good for the dogs.....anyone see the size of that needle? OUCH!!
