You can put pine needles and stuff from your yard in bags beside your black trash can. I called as I just had my back yard weed wacked and asked if I needed to do anything special. They said no, just put the bags buy the black trash can. They said not to put it near the orange one. I have not had any trouble with them. I needed a headboard picked up and I just called and put it out on Thursday. I like the big recycle can as most of my stuff seems to go in that one...
-
I also left last week several yard bags next to my trash can and they picked up with no problem. :)
-
Brent is the manager and he is a great guy. He wants to keep all of his customers happy.
Regarding your trash when you're gone, ask a neighbor to put it out for you that morning, and bring your cans in that night. Works for me....that's what neighbors are for!
I love the fact that more than half my garbage is being recycled. I never had the time to take it to the recycler myself, for the few cents I'd get, so this is great. I just keep two waste baskets in the kitchen. Everyone knows that one is for trash and one is for recycling things.
And whenever I put bagged pine needles by my trash can, they get picked up with the trash.
I'm so pleased, in fact, that I think it's about time to make brownies for the trash guys again!
-
Ooo KW I echo your words. My neighbors are great about that too. Where I used to live I had a 10 year old boy who wheeled my can out every week and brought it back after the trash was dumped. At that time I had four kids under the age of 6 and whenever I went outside to do ANYTHING, they all followed. I paid him $5 a month and it was a win win situation.
I also have separate places in my kitchen for the trash and for the recycling. There is no place to put the blue box so I hang a plastic shopping bag on a hook and all my collapsed boxes and crushed milk jugs and juice jugs go in there as well as my newpaper and junkmail. I take that out about once a day. I too proudly put the recycling where it belongs and challenge myself to fill the recycling bin with recyclables. I've only done that once.
Is Brent related to one of the teachers at WW Elm? I usually do the Christmas cookie thing for those guys.
-
Thanks for the tip on putting the bags of needles by the black can. I wish they had written that in their letter to us. It would have saved the hassle of complaining. [smiley=shuffle.gif]
I also liked the idea of paying a neighbor kid to push out and take back the cans. There is a boy just about the right age where $5.00 would still be meaningful.
Thanks again! [smiley=wavey.gif]

Baby Eagle,
I put out "12" black bags full of leaves, sticks, dog x$#*( and they took them all this morning!!!
It works!!!
-
I too put DOG x$#*( and have no problems!!! ;D
-
;) ;D :P :-* :)
-
I think the trash pick-up is great. I never have had any problems.
-
When we've had extra trash bagged up, they've always taken it. We're happy with them.
"Boxes of cookies taped on top of the containers for Christmas" happy.

-
Today is my trash day, and my contingency plan is to bag it and put it in the garage. Hopefully we'll have service next week.
-

-
I called CR&R and they said to put out your trash, no matter what your normal day is. They will be cruising the streets and picking up all trash.
Thanks CR&R!!
-
I had no clue that they were picking up today. I finally last week started cleaning up needles and leaves, and had a huge bag parked out front, which I was going to put beside the trash can next week and keep my fingers crossed. They picked it up! I had called them soon after the new containers came out to inquire about bags of yard trash, and was told that a special pick-up would be required. But this negated that, and I am pleased!!
-
I only have one complaint about the new system.
I used to get 3 40 gallon cans to put trash in. Now I get one 60 gallon can. Most of the high volume trash I put in the cans was pine needles. I would just fill whatever was left with bags, since there are ALWAYS MORE bags of needles.
Now, I like the increase in the recyling. But I need more pine needle space.
CR&R used to charge for extra bags. Are they still doing this?

And, no, they don't charge extra.

Well, yeah. I was kinda wondering that. (between really exciting episodes of my every day life)
Don't know if it's recyclable. I certainly HOPE it is. :o
Anybody got a clue?
-
there was an article in the orange county register today. YES it is recyclable.
-
-
-
:SMgrowsnow: ....and tomorrow is trash day... :SMgrowsnow:
-
We can only hope we get a pickup. Is there someone out there with a Tuesday trash day and had a pickup in the snow today? In all the years of living out here we only had one time that they didn't make it up here and that was this year when Highway 2 was closed. Then they came up the day after the highway opened. CR&R has been wonderful. I just hope that they make it for tomorrow because there is NO WAY I could fit another trash bag into my one refuse container. Even my recycling container is full.
-
they picked up mine today on my normal day
-
Anyone seen them out and about today?
-
Yes they were on Apple earlier this morning.
-
-
Sorry, didn't look that close to see which truck it was.
-
Trash guys are up on upper Oriole. Wheww!!!!! Great to see them. I feel so sorry for them having to go over the berm and lift a can over it.
-
-
Well, Thiasi and I had an exciting morning taking branches to the dump. ;)
I must say that first thing in the morning is the best time to do that wonderful task! It's not dusty (the dozer hasn't started pushing stuff around yet), the trash trucks haven't started coming in, and it's (relatively) cool. The employees were exceptionally helpful and pleasant this morning, helping us get the branches over the edge into the holding area. (They weren't over heated or stressed yet.)
Not a bad experience for a dump run.
-
I would just like to give a huge thank you to CR&R. I was driving to work a week or two ago in the morning, I saw a CR&R truck stopped on the side of the highway were some one either dumped there trash, or it fell out of there car, and CR&R stopped right there and picked it up. I was thrilled. Its not very often you see people go above and beyond there duty. :2thumbsup: GREAT JOB CR&R
-
C R & R has been great. One pick up day we did not put out our containers because they were almost empty. My hubby was sitting on the front deck and they asked him if he needed any help in getting them out. C R & R deserves a lot of karma points! My problem...they never did mention what we were to do with the old blue recycle bins.
-
-
I HAVE found a use for the blue bins if anyone else wants to be rid of theirs!
These CR&R guys are great. I do not have their services, preferring to take our garbage to the dump myself (SO FAR).
When they had the free trash pick up day this year I ran out and gave them cold sodas and bottled water. They were so appreciative!! Nice guys!
-
FYI
I just called CR&R to see how many total drivers were on my pick up today. I have some gift certs for the guys for the Christmas/New Year season.
Anyway the nice lady at CR&R said they are running a day behind because of the snow. So if you have a pick up today they might be getting it tomorrow. She said leave it out just in case, but put it back tonight if they don't come....
-
I should do that as well. Once I forgot to put the trash out, so I took the bag of stuff that would smell quickly and drove around till I found them. I told them I forgot to put the trash out and if they could just take this one bag. They took the bag and followed me home to get my trash can! What great guys!
-
The Mountaineer reports that CR&R purchased 3,000 60 gallon bearproof containers for their Wrightwood customers. The new containers will be distributed over the next few months.
-
That is really great news! This will help protect the neighborhoods and bears. :2thumbsup:
-
Whew, for a moment I thought the containers were going to be beerproof. That would not be good. :P
-
Do you have to call in to request them? or do they put them automatically in areas that have bear problems..? (like Acorn residents and Oriole S/West side)
-
Here's the company the new cans are suppose to be coming from:

CR&R tells me that they will begin delivering the new bear-proof containers starting Mon June 19, although they admit that the Hwy 138 closure will slow things down a bit.
-
Does anyone have CR&R's number handy? Im at work and need to call them. I have an old recliner I need picked up tomorrow.
Thanks.
-
Here ya go!
1-800-336-0396
-
Thank you very much!!!
-
wonder how they're going to deal with the 138 closure?
-
I talked to the recycling guy yesterday. He comes in at around 6 through the flagging and goes out through the 2/138 just like he always did.
Which leads me to be confused all over again about the flagging. Let's say it's 6 o'clock in the morning and Caltrans is letting people from Wrightwood go through the construction zone. Does this mean that the people on the 138 heading west will not be able to turn onto Highway 2 into Wrightwood? Do they sit on the 138 until after the flagging or do they take turns?
I'll post my other silly questions under the correct thread.
-
Flagging is one direction at a time. If there is a line, those waiting at the end of the line to go into Wrightwood do have to wait.
-
CR&R tells me that they will begin delivering the new bear-proof containers starting Mon June 19, although they admit that the Hwy 138 closure will slow things down a bit.
The Hwy 138 closure is bound to make a big impact on CR&R's daily operations.
-
Haven't seen CR&R delivering those bear proof trash bins yet so the closure must be a problem for them.
-
Does anyone know if the trash still goes out tomorrow?
Thanks
Pam
-
nope, they will run a day late.
-
-
thanks everyone :)
-
Haven't seen CR&R delivering those bear proof trash bins yet so the closure must be a problem for them.
FYI: We finally received our bear proof containers today. Yes, they are replacing both the trash, and the recycle containers.
-
I don't have a new bear proof can yet but is it my imagination or are they a bit smaller than the orginal cans? My mother in law received hers but lost all the papers that go with it. Which can is for refuse and which can is the recycling? The old ones say Refuse and the other one said Recylcing with a listing of all the stuff you could recycle.
-
how come stuff never gets bigger? always smaller and smaller
-
Stitches...
The blue bearproof can is for recycle stuff and the green can is for non-recyclables.
It seems backwards so I double--checked to be sure.
I also painted "trash" and "recycle" on them so I could tell the difference after dark.
-
Thank Nark. I thought the same thing. Those two cans will look the same in the dark. I thought it was backwards too but won't say anything else so I don't confuse everyone else.
-
I just wish we could get green stuff like weeds bushes etc., I have not seen any bears but I need to weed!!!!

Just think: "True Blue" and "Garbage Green".
Of course, in the dark a label is quite helpful.
-
Good Idea. Garbage Green. I'm printing index cards anyway and tape it on there.
-
Okay I get the new bear proof trash cans....but why is the recycle can blue and the trash is green? Am I the only one who doesn't get this? I always associate the enviroment with green so guess what? I blew the first week. Oh well grass is good for the recycling isn't?? By the way where is the spell check icon? I found the Teletype?
-
What? Blue is recycling??? I just got my cans Monday, so I've had no pickup yet, but there are no markings to indicate which is which, and I also assumed green to be recyclables. Are you sure about this?
-
CR&R is requesting that each resident separate their recyclable materials.
The green container is for regular refuse.
The blue container is for recyclables.
I got this from the CR&R website
-
this is odd sumbody dint use ther head
-
I was so proud of myself for filling the green can up with recycled items! And what I put in the blue can I never wanted to see (smell) again, which includes the litter box and picking up after the dogs. Sheesh.
-
Oops!! I guess that's CR&R's problem. Ugh what a mess for them. I printed index cards and put them in baggies and taped them to the cans for my mother in law. I don't have a bear proof can yet. I still think the new cans are smaller.
-
CR&R's website has the information, here's the link:

The blue container is for recyclables.
-
Remember when CR&R first initiated recycling, those small recycle bins we got were bright blue. I work in a hospital, and the recycle containers (mostly used for disposal of confidential paperwork for the shredding company to take care of), are that same shade of bright blue. So I'm used to blue being for the recycling. The new receptacles are a darker shade of blue, though, and would easily be mistaken for the dark green garbage containers in the dark.
I don't know if the new trash containers are any smaller than the non-bear-proof ones were, but they sure are a lot heavier (when empty)! Thank goodness that they are on wheels!
-
So how many people have had bears in their trash?
-
It's not just about bears - remember that we have coyotes, raccoons, and loose dogs, and whatever other critters who roam at night, that are capable of overturning a trash can and spilling the contents all over the street. I've lived here for over 29 years now, and for the first time, I feel comfortable putting the trash out the night before. This will be great on cold mornings, on my trash days off, not to have to get up at 0530 to put the trash out!!! ;)
-
So how many people have had bears in their trash?
In 25+ years - never had bears in the trash.
Neighbors did because they left trash bags in back yard and church camp did because dumpsters were not locked.

We've had bears get into our trash once. And he actually did open the lid and pull the trash bag out of the can. Then he took it across the street, ripped the bag open, and checked out his goodies. We watched the whole thing.
-
There were neighbors down the street who repeatedly put their trash out the night before trash day. I visitied with the people across the street with them, and we watched a bear pop the lid off the cans and pick out what it wanted.
Haven't seen one on the block in a few years.
-
I just don't understand why they dont have a weed can? our old house had 3 cans one esp for green or weeds etc. I have more weeds than cans and stuff!
Pak
-
So how many people have had bears in their trash?
On upper Oriole it was a serious problem for a couple years. Not sure about 03-present, but in 2001-2002 we had issues constantly in the 800 block.
-
I got my new bear proof containers.
Just watch out with the lids, because they're a lot heavier than the old ones. I just took out my recycling, opened the lid, and it landed against my garage window and broke it. :o
I'll never do that again.
-
I was wondering this morning when I took out the trash.....why are the recycle trash cans bear proof? Are the afraid the bears will steal the aluminum cans and cash them in? :o ;D

I have heard that the "cub" scouts collect cans... It beats panda-ering.
Watching bears collect cans is quite a Kodiak moment! But only if your polar-oid camera is ready.
Getting too close can be a grizzly experience!!
OK, I am beary sure you cannot bear much more bad puns...
-
That was good! ;D
-
Ladies take caution!!!!
I broke a fingernail in that stupid hole to open the lid! lol's
Hey MtnDude...you cracked me up with your question "why are the recycle trash cans bear proof?" my thought was because the bears could get in and suffocate themselves with the plastic....heee hee!

The good news is, Hoss has the window replaced within 2 hours.
Yeah, Hoss!

Ok, so I'm too lazy to read the previous pages, but someone told me that when we got the new cans, C R &R are not going to be picking up anything that won't fit in the trash cans anymore. Is this true? Because I just bagged up 12 bags of pine needles today and I need to know if they aren't going to pick it up.
-
If they don't pick them up, come over and dump them in our dumpster Cinchy. I can't imagine they wouldn't pick them up tho.
-
Does anyone know if the rumor is true that CR&R has been awarded the contract to remove all white trash from the Stater Brothers parking lot. I hope this is true, because it sure will make my shopping experience a heck of a lot more pleasant....
-
Thanks Mazzy. Guess I'll find out on Monday.
-
They will still pick them up. We just put out 8 bags yesterday and they had no problem taking them.
-

I think that is considered toxic waste and a special permit is required. ;D
-
>:( :eyebrows: :offtopic: BTW, there are some nice people down there as well.
I'm going to disable the latch on the recycling can. I'm not bothered by bears as much as by the neighborhood wandering dogs. They'll starve. :'(
-
We just put out 8 bags yesterday and they had no problem taking them.
No kidding???? When the road was torn up and a trip to the dump wasn't worth the effort, I had something like 14 bags of pine needles lined up. I only put out two bags a week, keeping my fingers crossed they would take those.
Hillbilly....When going to Stater Bros. and a group of punks are hanging around outside....I put on my demented eyeball face.....you know....like you've been staring at the sun for too long and your nuts. Practice repeatedly in the mirror until you get it right. Works for me :eyebrows:

They were actually our neighbors bags, we split them up so he did not have 16 bags next his trash cans. They took the 8 from us and the 8 from my neighbor without a problem.

I had to read that several times to get it...Do'h And after doing so.....that's pretty dang funny.
I should have said "and your "crazy"....jeez....I gotta be carefull what I say around here. ;D

A couple of weeks ago when I was recycling cans and plastic at the recycling shed near the Phelan Stater Bros. to a grumpy little guy working the facility, I saw a CR & R employee (that's what his safety vest, t-shirt and his marked trash cans said anyway) turning in about four full trash cans of crushed aluminum cans.
It looked a little strange to me and I wondered if those cans actually had been picked out of others recycle trash cans during their rounds. Maybe it's trivial but I'd rather have the cash in my pocket from my own recyclable stuff then to donate it to CR & R.
Just my two cents. Or in my case, $12.32 worth. Ka-ching.
-
If we choose to throw them away in our recycler, I think its fair game to them. More power to them if they want to pick them out and take them to a recycling center. ;D
-
One man's trash is another man's treasure. Obviously some people do not recycle in the sense of cashing it in for their own treasure...however, if they throw it away - wouldn't it be fair gain to someone else?! What's the big deal???
-
When faced with "punks" hanging around the Stater Bros....do any of you ask the store manager to move them off the property?
-

No never thought about it at Stater's....But I have at McDonalds and they got rid of them immediately and replaced my food...but they ran in to me and knocked my tray over, knocked my kid down...I somewhat told the manager to call the sheriff I was pressing charges if they did not remover the wasted teens.
-
This is just slightly off of the subject, but I once ate at the Phelan McDonald's.
Apparently, that's where the B-Team employees go to hone their skills before being allowed to work at the more impressive Micky D's on Highway 138 and I-15.
I waited 20 minutes for a simple hamburger. Not the Big Mac. Not fries. Not a milkshake. Just a simple slab of dead cow between two buns of mayonnaise, with a pickle slice added for looks.
That was twenty minutes of mingling with Phelanites while waiting for a little nutrition. It took hours of therapy to overcome the haunting images in my head. Even to this day, the banjo music still lingers.
On the other hand, the Phelan Burger King is fantastic. Fast, fresh and friendly. Try that Mocha Joe iced coffee sometime. Good to the last fatty drop.
(No, I don't work for Burger King)

Obviously the trash trucks won't be making their rounds today. I called the office and was told that if they don't make it to your house this week to just save all the trash and they will pick up all of it on your regularly scheduled day next week.
If anyone hears any different, or sees any trash trucks in your area, let me know. I'd love to get rid of all this stuff before company comes next week...
-
Our normal day is Monday, but the trucks came by yesterday and took our trash. So maybe stick your cans out tomorrow when it clears up and see if they pick them up.
-
Our normal day is Tuesday and the recycle truck came yesterday, but not the trash truck. I think we were the only ones on our block with our trash cans out.
-
Ours is Monday and only the recycle truck came
-
Both trucks came up our street yesterday - one following the other.
-
I called them this morning. My normal day is Wednesday. The nice lady said that yesterday they did SOME of the Tuesday route and abandoned the Wednesday route. I had no idea that Mondays didn't get done. Well, maybe they got some of Wednesday's. I'm just guessing. Anyway, tomorrow they will try again but will focus on the Thursday route first (I thought they did the East side on Monday, in town on Tuesdays and West side on Wednesdays). Then if they can, they will do the Wednesdays and the remainder ?Tuesday?. They will have to find my cans. I put them out this morning and they are half way up to the top of snow.
-
lol, mine is completely gone.......
-
so, if you have a Wed pickup, then we should put them out? there is really no place to put them except blocking my driveway.
-
We're heading to Phelan soon and will put ours out at our driveway while we're gone. Our road has only been plowed once in the past week, so not sure if they will make it or not. I sure as heck don't want to miss them though, both cans are full!
-
I had wheeled my trash container out to the street last Friday, after filling it with raked up leaves, pine needles, and yard debris. Of course, it got "snowed in", and I tried to dig a path to it yesterday, after finally clearing my driveway to the bottom. Gave up, decided I'd work on it this weekend, and get it emptied next week. I went out for a little over an hour this afternoon, and when I came back, the can had been emptied and replaced in that cleared-out spot, instead of blocking the now-much-narrower-than-usual entrance to my driveway. Kudos to CR&R!!! :2thumbsup:
-
Get your cans out, quick! The trash truck just came down Oriole and took ALL my trash - yippee! He said they are the only truck up here today.
-
Kudos to CR&R!! They're working today, walked up to my house, and wheeled out the trash bins on their own. How awesome is that?
-
woo hoo. They got mine too. I'm a happy camper and the guys can expect a box of homemade goodies next Wednesday!!! I appreciate them working on Saturday, especially before Christmas.
-
Has anyone who has Wednesday Trash Pickup seen CR&R at all? Just want to know before I drag the cans out.

Guess I better get dressed. . .
-
Thanks, TheHills. in my dreams, the trash guy just finished Upper Oriole and went down Conifer. We made it just in time.
-
I had to hand the recycle guy the trash can :sweatdrop:
But regular trash is out and ready to go :2thumbsup: .

Which bin is for regular trash and which is for recycling? I have a green and a blue. I've been doing it one way ever since moving here but a friend told me it's the other. :-\ CR&R never told me or sent me any instructions.
-
Blue is for recycling and green is for trash. Remember, recycle in the BLUE bin so the sky can stay BLUE! :)
-
Thanks! Ugh, so much for me being "green" all this time...
-
I remember it by saying "Green is for Garbage"
-
A real trick is to figure out exactly what "trash" is........cardboard is not trash, for example, because it can be recycled. Therefore shoeboxes; for example; are not trash. Some of the plastic bags used by stores to tote stuff home is now recycleable......not trash. Pet food cans, cans used for human food, and the like are trash. Is spoiled fruit considered trash? How about chuncks of concrete, or asphalt?
Generally speaking, I think of trash as anything that will not decompose naturally (plastic bottles, pvc used for lawn irrigation, tires, etc).
-
Thanks Gary! I've been throwing cat food cans into the recycle trash ::) , but no more. . .
-
Cat food cans and vegetable cans can be recycled. I take them to the recycle center and get money for them.
-
Maybe whatever trash service is in place where Gary lives (Riverside, I believe?), does not accept food cans as part of their recyclables, but they ARE on the list of things accepted by CR&R's recycle plant. As are all plastic bottles and containers. Food and beverage containers do need to be rinsed out before placing them in the recycle bin.
According to the list that came with the bear-proof cans, the following are allowed as recyclable:
-Newspaper
-Junk mail
-Cardboard
-Glass containers & bottles
-Magazines
-Tin and aluminum cans
-Styrofoam
-Computer paper, ledger paper
-Plastic containers & bottles
-Telephone books
-Scrap metal
NOT allowed in the recycle bin are:
-Waxed paper or milk cartons
-Aluminum foil
-Window glass
-Food and green waste
-Plastic toys
-Automotive and plumbing parts
I'm an avid believer of recycling, and when in doubt, I place the item in the recycle bin. I'd rather take a chance than throw away something that could have been recycled.
-
so we can recycle styrofoam but not aluminum?
-
What does Nolena do with all her used aluminum foil hats?
-
Thanks for posting ForestGal. I remember that list and we do our best to follow it. But I have to wonder who is checking up on this? Is it SB CountyGov people? Because if it is....
A few years ago I missed my "trash" pick up and the CR&R guy who was picking up my recyclable stuff said he would dump my "trash" in with the recycle pick up. I asked him if that was okay to do and he said it was no problem...
Since when does CR&R have high-tech trucks that divides trash from the recyclables... ???
-
According to the list -
YES to styrofoam
YES to aluminum cans
NO to aluminum foil
Nolena is obviously wasting valuable resources in her feeble attempt to remain sane. ;D
Jason, it's sad to picture that the "trash" guy said it was OK to put that into the "recycle" truck. To my knowledge, the stuff in those trucks is taken to different facilities, depending on the contents thereof. I'm certainly no expert, just a concerned citizen..... :)

That list makes my brain hurt. No wonder kids avoid taking out the trash. :)
-
So, from the list, it would appear that aluminum foil can be put into the recycle bin (as long as its clean).
-
OK, I don't feel so bad now, since the vast majority of "trash" I was putting in the blue bin is actually recyclable. But the stuff I was putting in the green bin was all recyclable. Oh well, now I know. Interesting that I never received the list or instructions. Thankfully the lady on the phone when I ordered my service told me when trash day was. :)
-
The new list, from their web site, is much more extensive and inclusive than is the single sheet that came with the cans (can't remember how long ago we got the bear-proof cans). Some items are allowed now that weren't then. That's great - the more we can keep out of the landfills, the better! :)
Guess I'll put the original list in the bag with the recycled junk mail. ;)
-
what the heck is plastic luggage?
-
Does anyone know whether CR&R is doing regular Monday pick-ups today? I can't find my "holiday" trash pick-up schedule. ???
-
Just got my answer -- looked out, and saw the truck coming up our street! :2thumbsup:
-
Oh shoot! I better get mine out quickly then!

The holiday was on Sunday. Does this mean that CR&R will have a regular pickup schedule? Can someone with a Monday or Tuesday pickup verify that for me. My pickup is generally on Wednesday and I don't want to miss them tomorrow morning.

Confirmed. My pickup day is Tues, and yes they were here today

Ok, Bob, if you won't, guess I'll have to...
"Gather 'round everyone, Stitches is going to get her cans out!"
-
Well, not witty but factual..... ;)
There was a flier enclosed with my last statement from CR&R stating that trash pickup would be on the regular days due to the holidays being on Sundays. :)
-
A bill? Well, I throw those away. They go in the recyling right?
My recycling is out but my trash is still strapped to the tree. I'll do that one tomorrow morning.
Yes, O' Stitches big ugly and dented cans are out and waiting for pickup. ;p
I just read about the fire in the CR&R truck. I can't believe people would actually throw out hot ashes and believe they are done. My ashes get to sit in the fireplace and then in a metal can for at least a week before they get dumped.
-
I just waved down the CR&R man. I also thought they'd be pushed up a day. :-\
I had ashes to dump and told him they had been sitting for a week. He told me he has seen three melted cans so far this year. Usually he said he'll see that many during the whole winter... :o
People need to properly dispose of their ashes! >:(
-
When i was a younger ladd, I was on the Pinon Hills Fire Dept. And we generally had one or two fires a week at the dump from ashes, during the winter. Also a few structure fires from sahes being stored in a metal can on the floor next to the fireplace or wood stove. You gotts to be careful. ;D ;D
-
Well maybe not sahes, But definetly ashes. ??? ???
-
My ashes are put in a metal can with a lid two days after the fire is out and sit INSIDE the fireplace for the rest of the week. I don't care who begs me to move it someplace else so they can start another fire. There was an incident, not too far from us, Pac-Fan, where people moved ashes out of the fireplace using a PLASTIC can and stored in the garage next to flamables. Lucky for them they had a neighbor who saw the smoke before the fire got too big.
You must have slept in Pac-Fan because he was running about an hour later than he usually runs.
-
I heard them go by earlier and realized I missed the boat. Then I heard them make another pass and I went out running and whistling. Luckily he heard me....
We also store our hot ashes in a metal container with a lid. I have a spot for it outside, away from the house in a snow bank. I try and clean our stove out if we have not had a fire for a few days. Usually after a trip to grandma's....

I just read this on ABC
"An elderly man has come forward and admitted to accidentally starting a blaze that burned nearly 3,200 acres and forced the evacuation of 10,000 people in Reno, Nev., officials said today.
Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said the man, who has yet to be identified, came forward Friday on his own and confessed to improperly discarding fireplace ashes outside of his home in the north end of the Washoe Valley, about 20 miles south of town."
-
I sort of guess that people that have never had a fireplace ,, much less lived in a high fire danger area.. do not know about the danger of ashes. They will smolder a bit in your fireplace for a day or two after the fire seems long out.
Perhaps we need a slogan... something like "SAVE YOUR ASH."
Course, that doesn't tell them what to do with it. Maybe "Can Your Ash." (CYA) I dunno. best, cheryl o7o

I hate to belabor this year after year. I know Wrightwood posted the holidays, but when I was at Jensen's on Monday, the cashier said that her trash got picked up on MONDAY which was Memorial day. I was going to take my trash out tomorrow but don't want to miss the guys if they are doing their usual pickup. Just as I had asked before, can someone who had their trash picked up on schedule on Monday and Tuesday verify the trash pickup day for me?
-
This remains correct:
If the holiday falls during the week, collection for the remainder of the week is one day behind.
If your trash is normally scheduled to be picked up on Tuesday, then it will be 1 day later or a Wednesday pickup.
-
I just call CR&R to see if the trash pickup is going to be delayed. They take off some holidays and not others. And, they always have a recording on the phone to tell you if your trash pickup will be delayed. cheryl o7o
-
They had me panicking this morning because a CR&R truck came up my street at 8. I rushed to the window and it was the one that empties the dumpsters. My neighbor has a dumpster outside. Then I talked to a person at the office and they confirmed that Wednesday pickup days will be on Thursday because of Memorial Day.
Note. Wrightwood, when I do a search for CR&R, it never finds anything. Why?
-
It must be the ampersand the search engine doesn't like. I tried CRR and it worked :)
-
Okay. Thank you!!
I do this every time there is a holiday to check and I'll have to remember that trick.

Did CR&R stop recycling services? I started to notice in June that only one CR&R truck comes around on trash days. They load both the garbage and recycling bins into the same truck. I have checked the CR&R website and they do not state any reduction in services due to COVID-19 or anything else. I have not contacted CR&R directly yet, but I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this or had any information.

From Wrightwood CSD
Trash Pickup and Recycling
November 19, 2020
Just a reminder, now that CR&R is picking up recycling separate from regular trash, we are hearing that customers are putting regular trash in the recycle bin. If regular trash is in with the recycling, the recycling may not be completed. In addition, construction related materials (rocks, concrete, dirt, etc.) are being put into the bins. These items should be taken to the dump to be disposed of. Paint and oil are considered hazardous waste and have to be disposed of during a hazardous waste event. Thank you all for your help during this time.

CR& R will only be picking up commercial trash until further notice!
-
Is this change re: not picking up residential trash weather related? If so, is there a way they can put bins somewhere accessible to residents where we can take our trash?
-
CR&R collection services are subject to interruption today Monday February 27, 2023, through Friday March 3, 2023. We will be attempting to service areas that are opened (plowed) and are deemed safe. We are anticipating being on regular schedule next week March 6, 2023, through March 10, 2023.
Please bear with us as we get through this unusual storm system. Thank you for your understanding!

I love it when a company reduces service, then says "We look forward to continuing to provide you with the best possible service."

I think this decision by the owner of CR&R is going to work against them in the long run. And maybe they're losing interest in continuing with service to Wrightwood. I wonder if that played a role in their decision. I also wonder if the workers started complaining about having to pick up extra bags of pine needles and that's why the owner decided to limit it. I wish we had more explanation so we know whether to react in anger or with a certain level of understanding. It's one thing to limit it to three bags once a month, but it's another to "charge" us (how much, BTW?) if we call them to pick up 20 bags at once. Part of the problem I have is that when I rake up my pine needles, there's no way I can avoid getting some rocks with them. And the Pine Needle PIck-Up Event doesn't want them with rocks. What is the solution here? Look for another trash company? How many years are we locked in to using CR&R?
-
Wow! CR&R has done so much for this community over the years....for free. Sounds like you need to use your dump card and haul your own pine needles to the dump.
-
We aren't "locked in" -- CR&R has a contract with the CSD. I don't know when it runs out.
This does present an opportunity for someone to haul yard waste, just like any gardener/landscaper.
... and as SpeedRacer points out, we all have dump cards and can haul our own.
For some inexplicable reason, I found myself in possession of a utility trailer. We're going to get some use from it.
Doesn't mean I like the change, we used this a lot.

Does this only apply to pine needles or ALL green waste? It IS weed removal season and we will have multiple bags of weeds.

I've not seen the truck driver stop and inspect yard waste bags to see if they were pine needles or something else, so I'd assume it applies to everything not in an actual CR&R provided can. CR&R can tell you.
-
I'm just going to note this here:
CR&R says an additional can is $23/quarter. I didn't ask how much they'd want to pick up additional bags.

Just to update:
They want $1.42 per 32 gallon bag of yard waste. Not 33 gallon or 31 gallon. You have to call for pickup.
I called to check, and was quoted an entirely different price for an additional can. When I told the agent I was quoted a different price, he came back with a lower price.
So, as Ronald Reagan said "trust but verify."

Is CRR on strike like trash service down the hill? Our street's trash has not been picked up and its usually done before 8 a.m.
-
Phelan CR&R is not on strike
-
Facts about CR&R.
Bears get into trashcans - it's what comes from living in the mountains. So if you can't take your trash out in the a.m. of your day, pick it up.
Drivers take different routes so pickup times may be different than what you are used to.
If your pickup was missed call the Phelan office and make sure to talk to them, not the reps at the 800 number. They are city folk and don't understand small town situations.
If you think another company is going to do better you may want to rethink that. It's a gamble.
-
They're a minor pain to use, but CR&R does have bear-proof trash cans, no extra cost.
-
They actually don't offer bear proof cans anymore. Basically some people have them from their old stock and they won't be getting more or replacing ones that break.
-

True, the older "bear" cans are a bit tougher than the newer assignments. Fact is, a bear will still get a "bear" can open easily. They simply jump on the opposite side of the lid opening and it pop's right open which is pretty smart. I still have the old "bear" cans from 2004 and the only thing that has failed is the lid pivot pin. I machined aluminum pins that replaced the plastic pins to keep the old tougher cans in service.
-
CR&R has a rate sheet of all the approved prices for cart/dumpster/extra cans/bags. It would have been approved in a protest vote by Wrightwood voters. If the CSD doesn't have a copy on their website - ask them for one You can also request a copy of your "franchise agreement.". CR&R has "pull out" service. The driver will come in and take your cans out. It is an additional $10/month.
They have 24 hours to pick up a missed can. You must call them to report that it was missed. After that, you can request a credit.
Here in Pinon Hills, our problem is dogs. You can put a bungee over your lids. I think bears would just laugh at that.

Another week and another trash can not emptied. :(
What’s going on with the frequency of missed days? Sometimes it’s the trash, other times, like today, it’s the recycling. It’s getting more and more common over the last 6 months or so.
-
Trucks have broken down from time to time cuz of the wear and tear from climbing up the mountain. The guys do the best they can.
Also, if people put their trash cans right next to each other and not the requested two to three feet between them, that adds extra time to pick up. Guys have to get out of the truck, move it, etc. Sometimes they work 11 hours a day to try to get everybody's trash picked up. It's not an easy job.
Like any vehicle, you can buy new trucks every 5 years like the average person does but at $250,000 our rates are going to skyrocket. Personally, I don't want my rates to go up. If it's really driving me nuts, I might stick my trash in the back of my vehicle and use my dump card. The 8 mile drive is not that much of an inconvenience.
It is definitely not the drivers. Have you ever looked inside some of the trucks from the late 1990's? I'm afraid that if we try to get a new company the costs will skyrocket and service will still be sketchy cuz they will have to drive farther and they are definately not used to mountain driving.

Called and spoke to someone 2 days in a row and the trash is still sitting on the curb. Must be nice to have a monopoly on trash service.

For your reading entertainment, here is a list of SB County Franchise agreements:
https://dpw.sbcounty.gov/solid-waste-management/franchise-agreements/ (https://dpw.sbcounty.gov/solid-waste-management/franchise-agreements/)
It's very common that trash haulers do have franchise agreements in place. I don't know when the Wrightwood one expires, but if the CSD decides to renegotiate it, it's going to take several years before a new one can be put in place.

I still stand my ground that if another company tries to take on WW, the results may be the same. They don't know how to drive in the snow, will hate putting chains on, will have trucks break down cuz they are driving a farther distance to get up here and service may be the same. Just my two cents.

I agree with you to a point, but the amount of oil that CC&R leaves in the street after their weekly pickups could and or should be a citable.

It'll be gone after winter.

Yep, washed down in to our soil

Trash trucks leaking hydraulic hoses can cause significant issues to the road, both environmentally and in terms of road maintenance requirements.
Hydraulic oil that remains on asphalt may degrade the surface by softening or eroding the top layer, leading to premature road damage.
Hydraulic fluids contain hazardous components that are toxic to soil and water. When spilled, these substances can contaminate storm drains, groundwater, and surrounding environments, harming plants and aquatic life.
The fluid creates a slip hazard for both vehicles and pedestrians. Accidental spills have prompted road closures to prevent accidents resulting from slick pavement.
Smaller, untreated leaks can go unnoticed, resulting in lingering environmental risk and cumulative contamination.

I would think that that would be an excessive amount of oil to destroy roads. These trucks leave small amounts. Either way, CALL the company if you want the trucks fixed. I'm sure the guys would appreciate it. In the meantime put some Dawn dish soap and water on the area. Then cover with dirt to soak up.
-
Not trying to be harsh, but I suspect you know that significant amounts of hydraulic fluid are considered a hazmat situation, right?
-
Setting aside the environmental considerations, if the hydraulics are leaking badly it's something they'd want to fix before they failed catastrophically.
If CR&R hears that they have a leaky truck, they'll want to figure out which truck leaks and fix it, but that could take a while. They might miss it if the problem doesn't happen in the yard.
If they hear that on September 17th on Victorville St. in Wrightwood their truck leaked all over the place, then they can find out which truck picked up trash that day at that location, and go straight to that truck. If they're pretty sure this is the one that leaks, they'll be a lot better at finding it.
Bring back the environmental issue, and they'll be motivated to fix it before they get fined.

Joe Schmoe - yes I do. Usually i just see a stream of fluid - not tons. I hope someone told the driver for his safety!
