Well, for heaven's sake -- I had no idea that grizzlies once lived this far south. Thanks a lot, Mr. Slover, for helping to wipe them out. >:(
Great piece of history though, as always.

Great bit of info. Appreciate it.
ChrisLynnet, I was also surprised to learn that we once had Grizzlies in our area. Years ago I remember reading that the last ones were killed off in the 20's or 30's.

So how/when did Slover Canyon get it's name? Obviously related but how?

Slover Mountain is located to the south of the top of Lone Canyon Canyon and is named after Isaac Slover. This also indicated that the area of the grizzly attack was in this area and not further north in Mormon Rocks.

Without trying to sound too Clint-ish.
It is actually Slover Canyon that is named after Isaac Slover at the top of Lone Pine Canyon. Slover Canyon is one of many (Sheep, Heath, etc..,) that lead to the top of Wright Mtn and a great hike. There is still a big bear that likes to hang out up there.

Very sad our state mammal is no longer with us. I am all for a reintroduction, but I doubt it would ever happen. CA is too small for both bear and humans.
I think the Grizzy should be reintroduced along our Southern boarder.

Bob,
That's the best idea i've heard all week! ;D

Has anyone been up Slover Canyon along the Blue Ridge Truck Trail lately? If so, how is the trail? Is it dangerous? Did the BRTT ever connect with its counterpart on top of the ridge?
